Angels standing pat on offense ... for now

The Angels not only are out on free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira, but they also are lukewarm on free-agent left fielder Manny Ramirez, according to major-league sources.

At least for the moment, the Angels are talking about finding offensive solutions from within. That means no Ramirez, no Adam Dunn, no Milton Bradley. Until further notice.

The fact is, the Angels will be devoid of left-handed power if they lose both Teixeira, a switch-hitter, and Garret Anderson. The biggest power threats among their remaining switch-hitters are Kendry Morales, who is unproven, and Gary Matthews Jr., who is recovering from knee surgery and might not be ready for Opening Day.

Dunn might make sense, but the Angels' outfield is stacked and the team is accustomed to superior defenders such as Casey Kotchman and Teixeira at first base. Morales remains the leading candidate to replace Teixeira. The Angels also could trade Chone Figgins and install Brandon Wood at third base.

Rest assured, general manager Tony Reagins will continue exploring both trades and free-agent signings. Tex or no Tex, Manny or no Manny, it is difficult to imagine the Angels standing pat.

And Peavy?

The Angels' interest in right-hander Jake Peavy is limited, at least at the Padres' current asking price. But the sudden lull in the Peavy discussions does not figure to last.

The Braves appear out of the picture — they no longer can start their package with shortstop Yunel Escobar after sending infielder Brent Lillibridge to the White Sox and failing to sign free agent Rafael Furcal.

The Cubs, however, could revive discussions if they get approval from their new ownership, which is expected to be decided within a month. And the Angels did ask about both Peavy and Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez at the winter meetings.

Gonzalez isn't going anywhere. And for Peavy to waive his no-trade clause to the American League, he might require a financial inducement beyond the four years and $63 million remaining on his contract.

"Honestly we've never discussed it, partly because it's never been discussed with us," Peavy's agent, Barry Axelrod, said of a possible trade to the Angels.

"He still has a preference for the National League. But Anaheim, as we've said in the past, always had a little bit of a leg up on a lot of American League teams just because of geography."

Peavy could commute from his home in the San Diego area to Angels Stadium, just as Padres manager Bud Black did when he was the Angels' pitching coach. But at the moment, the subject is closed.

"If it heats up, nobody is going to know it," Padres GM Kevin Towers said. "As of right now, we're not talking to anybody. And we don't plan on calling anybody.

"Talking to Barry, he'd rather not be involved in it. We had put him and Jake in a tough spot. (Team president) Sandy (Alderson), Barry and I all agreed, the less we talk, the better to insulate them from the process.

"We've got a pretty good idea which teams that Jake would maybe consider. If they call, we'll listen to what they have to say. If it's enticing enough, we'll approach Barry and Jake."

Slugger shuffle

The Cubs are confident of signing free-agent designated hitter Milton Bradley, but a number of teams remain interested in the free-agent designated hitter, including the Rays, Yankees and Nationals. The Yankees, as is their custom, are touching base with virtually every available offensive player.

The market for hitters is slow, but not dormant. Some teams are adjusting their plans almost daily because of anticipated shifts in the market as well as payroll concerns. A number of salary slots also could open with trades.

Ramirez's next team is an open question — if the Angels truly do not want him, the Yankees might (or might not) be his only aggressive suitor, effectively lowering his price. Dunn's only known suitor is the Nationals, but teams are maneuvering to get him, sources say.

One slugger to watch: Pat Burrell. The Rays could sign either Burrell or Jason Giambi if Bradley lands with the Cubs. The Mariners also like Burrell, and the Rangers could view him as an option if they do not trade for the Tigers' Gary Sheffield. The Reds have publicly stated an interest in Burrell, but he likely will rise out of their price range.

Around the horn

The Rangers want to purge salary — right-hander Kevin Millwood will earn $11 million next season, and his $12 million club option for 2010 will become guaranteed if he pitches 180 innings next season. Righty Vicente Padilla is owed $13.75 million in 2009 salary and buyout and first baseman Hank Blalock is due $6.2 million in the final year of his contract. Trading one or more of those players would help clear payroll for a free agent such as righty Ben Sheets. Of course, to move Millwood or Padilla, the Rangers might need to include cash or take back salary in return ...

The Brewers actually showed interest in Dunn while discussing a trade of center fielder Mike Cameron to the Yankees. Corey Hart could move to center if the team moves Cameron and signs a left-handed hitting outfielder. But the top available free agents -- Dunn, Bobby Abreu, Garret Anderson, Ken Griffey Jr. -- are DH types who are better suited for the AL. The Brewers also need to put their money into pitching ...

Abreu remains in touch with the Yankees (who doesn't?) and also could become a candidate cross-town if the Mets trade Ryan Church. Abreu, 34, had to be encouraged by the three-year, $31.5 million contract that the Phillies awarded Raul Ibanez. He is two years younger than Ibanez, and his .903 career OPS is 85 points higher. ...

Rafael Furcal's new contract with the Dodgers includes incentive bonuses if he maintains the core-strengthening program that he began last season. Furcal actually liked the idea of including the bonuses in the deal. His problem is not his desire, but his style of play. "Furcal plays violent every inning," one NL coach says. "He doesn't half-ass anything. He runs hard, throws hard, swings hard." ...

The Rangers want to purge salary -- right-hander Kevin Millwood is guaranteed a combined $23 million over the next two seasons, righty Vicente Padilla is owed $13.75 million in 2009 salary and buyout and first baseman Hank Blalock is due $6.2 million in the final year of his contract. Trading one or more of those players would help clear payroll for a free agent such as righty Ben Sheets. Of course, to move Millwood or Padilla, the Rangers might need to include cash or take back salary in return. ...

Bet you didn't know this: Jerry Hairston's .427 on-base percentage out of the leadoff spot last season was the second highest in the majors behind Furcal's .434 (minimum 150 plate appearances). Hairston, a free agent, is considering an offer from the Reds, his previous team, and also drawing interest from the Mariners. The Royals like Hairston, but lack the payroll flexibility to sign him. ...

Free-agent right-hander Daniel Cabrera turned down more money from the Pirates to sign with the Nationals, according to sources close to the negotiations. His one-year deal, worth $2.6 million, according to The Baltimore Sun, is pending a physical. Cabrera, who previously played for the Orioles, wanted to stay in the Baltimore-Washington area.

All of You Haters-
Mention one hitter in the American League that can hit like Manny. Your comments dont make sense, they are based on hate and envy.

Manny is going to wish those last 2 years at $20M a piece were not voided by the Dodgers.

Reagins and Artie better sign Manny or Milton to DH or its going to be a long summer and I'm gonna have a frickin stroke. Kendry is going to be alright at first, 285, 15-20 hrs, and 75 to 90 rbi, it all comes down to where he hits in the lineup.

Manny would be a good addition to the Angels, big Mike is the guy to manage him. I am sorry, but i won't give in to Morales at first until all possibilities are gone. Hopefully they can trade him.

oldoug
I truly think that you are senile. The Angels or any other team (and that includes the Red Sox, a team I have been a fan of for 50 years) would be lucky to have a hitter like Manny. All the rest of the whole Manny business is just so much BS. Only someone with limited mental abilities does not realize that on at least some level...whether they want to admit it or not.

I will say this, I am shocked that we baseball fans have heard so little from the left coast.

Morales is anything but a better hitter than Kotchman, but it is what it is. He's now the first baseman and I will agree, it's case closed.

as a full time Angel fan living in OC, I can assure everyone who'll listen, the Angel 1B IS Kendry Morales, there is no fix needed, better hitter than Kotch, not on the same level with the glove.

I think to fix the problem at first the Angels should get Mike or Mark Sweeney or get Richie Sexson they should also look into Tony Clark and Sean Casey.

Guys, guys.

The Angels made the EXACT same offer to Tex that the Yanks did. This wasnt a lack of effort on the Angels part. This was simply about Tex wanting to be on the East Coast. Thats it.
In hindsight, I'm upset about the Kotch/Tex thing, but wasnt Morales hitting pretty good IN THE MAJORS (he hits off the charts in the minors) towards the end of the season there? But when the trade originally went down, I was stoked. Its too bad they couldnt have factored in his desire to play on the East coast and the fact that eliminated the Angels no matter their offer. Maybe they did, who knows.

ART MORENO SAYS THAT HE WANTS TO BE THE STEINBRENER OF THE WEST COAST..........?????????????????? WHY ARE PEOPLE OUTRAGED ABOUT THE BIG 3 MAKING SO MUCH MONEY AND FLYING THEIR PRIVATE JETS WHEN THESE ATHLETES ARE OUT OF CONTROL????

OMG here we go again about salary caps. You mean like the NFL? Where there are no guaranteed contracts and quality vets are routinely released because of the salary cap? Or like the NBA where the salary cap only applies to other teams free agents but not your own and where owners circumvent the cap by signing other free agents before signing their own?

Salary caps are a joke. They don't work, never have worked, and would never work in MLB.
Did you know that as a percentage of revenue MLB pays their players the least of any of the three major sports? And that's without a salary cap.

If you want to level the free agent landscape, the way to do it is with revenue sharing, not a salary cap. MLB doesn't share revenue like they do in the NFL. If they did, then every team would get a piece of the Yankees, Mets, and Red Sox lucrative media packages. That would change things quite a bit...

Congrats to Moreno and Reagins for opting out of the Manny market. Since he's not going to get the ridiculous contract that he and Boras want, he will go into the season pouting. Whoever is foolish to sign him will have headaches for the duration of his contract.

If the Yankees, Boras and Selig continue to run baseball then let them start a new league of their own. Get them out of MLB all together and put a new structure in place that would be fair to all teams. Everyone thinks MLB needs these them to succeed by that's the furthest from the truth. Even Yankee fans themselves should be embarrassed at the way the Yankees try and buy their way into a championship. No youngsters from the farm to watch or talk about and the ones who are on the Yanks team are always being considered for trade like Cano and Cabrera. Kick these self absorbed idiots out of the game and the sport wouldn't be such a joke compared to those who enforce salary caps.

The Braves are not going to let Kotchman go. He is there 1st baseman. Man I'm really just can't get over that trade. Yes Texieria is better, but Kptchman was doing his job that Tex was doing at that time and was carrying the Angel when he got traded. The Angel have enough pitching and yes Peavy would be great but you don't trade Figgins.

correction to Morales....if he can't pull his weight.

Hey guys - don't rule out a Kotch return to Anaheim. I know it seems like a stretch, but if Morales can pull his weight defensively it could happen. I think the Peavy thing is really going to heat up and very well might happen. Pitching wins championships and we know our Angels are not an ove rzealous, flashy offensive team. Look at Mike's way of playing ball the last 10 years. Unfortunately, Figgy might have to go in a Peavy deal, but there are other lead off guys out there to be had. I LOVE Figgy, but if trading him brings 3-4 years of Peavy I'll take it. And I'm sure that would lure Lackey and other free-agents-to-be in staying with the organization.

Arte - THANK YOU! Thank you for standing up for your customers. Thank you for not being held hostage by Mega Agents like Bor-Ass. And especially thank you for keeping us competitive!

Because of the best owner in baseball that is why we attract passionate, quality guys who make the clubhouse a harmonious place to work/play.

I was a big time Angel fan, but now I have decided to just hate baseball once the Angels gave up Kotchman who I knew wouldn't resign with the Angels because he and his agents are greedy and Teixeria didn't want to play on the West Coast. I feel that the Angels gave away a player who should have been an Angel for a lot of years. Kotchman was a great fielder and he was just starting to hit. Now the Angels are saying that they will trade Figgins. WHAT ARE THE ANGELS DOING ?

Fanscorner, I have to ask the question -- What is corrupt in what the Yankees and Boras have done?

I'm a big time Angels fan, and have been since I was a small boy growing up in a burgeoning community called Anaheim back in the mid 70's. I rooted for guys like Mike Epstein, Bill Singer, Dave Chalk, and so many others. I remember the Cowboy going out and signing Joe Rudi, Bert Campinaris, Bobby Gritch, Dan Ford, Don Baylor, etc and bringing a division title to Anaheim in 1979. It wasn't corrupt then and it itsn't corrupt now. The dollar figures have just grown exponentially.

What I'm angry about isn't Tex signing with the Yankees. I'm angry because Reagins knew what it would take to sign Tex when he traded for him last season and he failed to make the offer. He traded away a legitimate gold glove caliber first baseman and a left handed power hitter for a three month rental with no intention of making him an Angel for the next several years.

Boras and the Yankees didn't make Reagins do that -- he did it on his own. It was a bad baseball decision and a worse business decision. What the Yankees have done is what the Angels should have done -- namely signed the best availble hitter on the open market.

Boras & Yanks have corrupted baseball while Selig and company get paid off and turn their backs. After 48 years I have lost faith in anyone who operates this sport forever. When one Sport can be dominated by ob=ne agent and the Yankees to this extent the game is no longer worth supporting. Sabathia, Burnett, Teixeira, Manny and $500 million later in this economy and there is nothing corrupt?
