The Cubs, trying to clear salary while fortifying their bullpen, are close to trading right-hander Jason Marquis and cash to the Rockies for right-hander Luis Vizcaino, according to major-league sources.

The move, which is not expected to be announced until next week, would save the Cubs between $5 million-$6 million — money they could devote to the pursuit of a left-handed hitting outfielder such as their primary target, free agent Milton Bradley, a switch-hitter.

The cash going from the Cubs to the Rockies would be less than $1 million, sources say. The Rockies would take on Marquis' $9.875 million salary for next season while the Cubs would assume Vizcaino's $3.5 million obligation.

Vizcaino's contract also includes a $4 million option or $500,000 buyout for 2010. The option will become guaranteed if Vizcaino appears in 68 games next season.

While several sources indicated that the deal is all but completed, another source with direct knowledge of the talks said the teams have merely engaged in conversation.

The Rockies have a surplus of right-handed relievers and they long have had interest in Marquis, a sinker-baller who is 3-0 with a 2.51 career ERA at Coors Field. The team also had pursued free-agent right-hander Tim Redding, who is looking for a two-year contract.

Ken, you need to write a NEW article soon; I have forgotten if Marquis was shipped to the Mile High City (LOL). I hope you are enjoying your holidays and look forward to reading your next article; I bet you daughter is looking forward to American Idol.

forget Marquis. I think Aaron Miles pitched an inning or two for the Cards. he can be your starter or your reliever. Cubs keep getting old Cardinal castoffs like Marquis, Edmonds and Miles. Can we send you Juan Encarnacion and Chris Duncan?

He has not been traded yet!

Marquis was overpaid and is an average starter. I am not sad to see him go, although I'm not sure what they are getting in return is much better.

Buck, I'm not saying I want him back, I'm just saying he is one of, if not the best fifth starter in the game. You guys keep saying he's not, name 3 number 5 starters that are better than him. And every year Marquis has been in the league, his team has made the playoffs. He's a winner.

Rich Hill guys? He's done. He can't throw the ball over the plate anymore. Who knows what went wrong with him, but I think he is done. I wish him the best of luck, but I just don't see him turning it around. We'll see how Marshall does a whole year as a starter.

What happens if Harden goes down? Who takes his spot?

Marquis is not the best #5 starter in the league, but he is a good # 5 starter. He's averaged 13 wins over the last 5 years. Is he worth 10 mil he will make this year, obviously not. But he wasn't getting paid 10 mil a year every year with Cubs. I will be happy to see Marshall as the #5 starter if the Cubs don't get anyone else, but that doesn't mean Marquis is a terrible 5th starter. Lastly, Rich Hill? As much talent as Rich Hill has you obviously don't follow the Cubs closely to think Rich Hill is going to given the #5 starter or even has a very good chance. He has an ERA over 6 in winter ball and has not been able to get over his mental and control problems. He is a long shot at this point to even be in the Cubs organization when the season starts as he is out of minor league options.

Hey joecub....your a m-o-r-o-n dude!!! Sean Marshall not only is a more solid 5th starter than Marquis, but he already is in that spot!! Marquis is Colorados problem now. So put down the old milwaukees light and sober up to clear your head!

Because he was a fifth starter on the Cubs...

People also calling Marquis a fifth starter? Anyone being paid 10 million a yr is not a fifth starter. The only teams that would pay a fifth starter $10 million are the Yankees and Red Sox.

Why does everyone think the three prospects they got for DeRosa are good enough to let them get Peavy? DeRosa isn't good enough to net top tier prospects.

Why would the Red Sox want Fukodome?

thats exactly why they gvot those prospects, to trade for peavy, and no metter how much i liked de-ro he wont have another season like last year again. miles is more versatile and is a pesky hitter, cubs did well

DeRosa is not as big of a loss as some are putting it. You know why? Mike Fontenot. Limited playing time, he hit over .300, 9 homers and 40 RBI. Starting role DeRosa hit .280+ 20 homers, and 87 RBI. Mighty Mike will step up. And Aaron Miles can play more positions than DeRosa.

Vashon68 OK i can agree with that...and your marshall comments...You have to give Fukudome another year...all the travel..more games...food...all that has affected him..its like he is another world in a way..lets see what he does...BUT Dero is a HUGE loss i think...Miles is nowhere near Dero...and As far as marquis have a good record in Coors..lets just say...wait till the end of the year and watch his era go from 4.5 to 5.5...

Why would anyone pay Marquis 5-6 million?

If you remember Jason Marquis was signed to be a 3-4 starter...He failed-love the fact he could hit but he is too in consistant as a pitcher...I'm not high on Marshall but after 2-3 innings you know what kind of game you are getting from him...I vote to trade those 3 prospects -Marshall to Padres for Peavy..Trade Fukudome to Red Sox or Yankees for 1-2 low level prospects ..Sign Bradley

My issue with signing Bradley is not his personality. I don't remember many issues coming up in Texas with him, so maybe they came up with a strategy for dealing with him that the Cubs can apply.

My issue with signing Bradley is that he is not durable enough to be a starting outfielder. He DHed most of his time in Texas. And anyone able to have his season ended by getting shoved down is not durable enough to play the field.

Bobby Abreu is the best fit for the Cubs RF opening. Dunn strikes out to much to fulfill the purpose the Cubs want a left handed bat to fulfill. Bradley isn't durable enough.
Abreu is the best RF available to do what the Cubs want a new RF to do. So hopefully the budget they gat back by trading DeRo and Marquis will go to him instead of a man who will spend half the season on the DL if he is made the everyday RF.

how is he not a solid 5? how many teams would kill for the 5th starter that goes 11-9 with a 4.53 era? heck how many teams would kill for their number 1 starter to put up numbers like that?
