The Yankees have signed free-agent infielder Angel Berroa to a minor-league contract, according to major-league sources.

Berroa, 30, is expected to compete with Cody Ransom for the utility infielder job.

Berroa began last season with the Royals, but was traded to the Dodgers in June, where he filled in for the injured Rafael Furcal.

mckenja - I'm sorry, but you're dead wrong on this one. Berroa HAS been coached and is unquestionably the most undisciplined hitter in baseball. He never walks, swings at anything, and his range has severely diminished in the past few years. He is completely uncoachable, and if he sees the field for the Yankees, they're in real trouble! I'd also bet the mortgage he's older than 30.

Jeter would make a pretty good LFer. His "jump" is what's lacking. Even it it takes him a little longer to react to a hit ball in LF, he still has the speed to track them down and a good arm. He just doesn't have the reaction time necessary. As for Posada, I was assuming he'd be moving to 1b in a year or two myself. Now, we've got out DH position tied up for the length of his contract. It'll definately be interesting to see what happens if Matsui is healthy too.

HPdrifter..

good point on posada..though when i thought about the lineup with posada and hopefully a healthy matssu...how nice that would be.

but ur right..posada's arm is a question..i can already see lil rays and lil midget red sox' like pedroia running all over the bases.

so..if tex is gon be at first base for the next decade...

i guess there goes the idea of moving posada to first in a couple years..

and there goes moving jeter, too. we all know jeter has lost range at shortstop..so where will he play in a couple years? hes 34 ryt?

we got the pitching..
we need some field players to start gettin ready..and start..in a couple of years.

The Yankees are going to sign all 750 MLB players and loan a few out to their opponents for each game.

Seriously, of cknyc's list the Halos would only be interested in Swisher - they already have a full complement of broken down OF. Swish could play/platoon at 1B and fill in at OF. But I don't think Swish gets us Chone, besides, where does Figgins play - not 3B Tower, be real. A-Rod is due for an MVP this year. I would love for the Yanks to get Ollie Perez. One more southpaw locks up their rotation. But their biggest question/weakness is whether Posada can keep baserunners from advancing with that reconstructed shoulder. If he can't the Sox and Rays will compete.

if we talkin about trades for figgins..

matsui
damon
swisher
nady
cabrera

who would you give up?

matsui has power but with that knee...who knows. its just..why is he so scared to go under the knife and get it repaired?

damon..hmmmthe Angels already have 2 centerfielders.

swisher can play outfield and infield just like figgins..and is also a switch hitter..and was number 1 in taing pitches las season.

nady has power..but everyone knows hes really not a 300 hitter..

cabrera...switch hitting shadow.

who would the Angels take?

i know..how bout sign andruw jones to a minor league contract? hell we signed a wahsed up berroa might as well keep goin on the ''lets give him one more shot'' tour.

Berroa is terrible...he strikes out 4x as much as he walks...his OBP is one of the worst in the league...Cody Ransom is not much better although he showed some spark last year...Yankees are better off asking Luis Sojo to come out of retirement

Mckenja,

Dump A-Rod? Sure the guy hasn't been a great playoff performer for the Yanks as of yet, but he's not going anywhere. Berroa is the kind of guy the Yankees needm though Figgins would be a welcome addition if he would be willing to accept less playing time. Maybe ship away another player such as Damon, Nady or Matsui. I would personally re-sign Abreu. Please Check out my blog.

cknyc-If we got Figgins, who I like, cause he gots that fire-like the second baseman we had,and traded for A-Rod...Would you put him at third? Then we could dump A-Rod..

Towerpwr--You are right on about Berroa, but sometimes the right coach can turn him innto a real ball player.Berroa has some potential to develop.he'll compete--

There are many people you see in MLB that make you shake your head and say, how is this guy up there? Berroa is this guy for me. He hits a buck twenty, and is, in my opinion, an average infielder. Has been like this his entire career... Amazing
