The Mets are on the verge of adding a free-agent pitcher, but it is not right-hander Derek Lowe or lefty Oliver Perez.

The team is close to signing right-hander Tim Redding to a one-year, $2.25 million contract, according to a major-league source.

Once the two sides reach agreement, Redding will need to pass a physical for the deal to be completed.

Redding, who turns 31 on Feb. 12, went 10-11 with a 4.95 ERA for the Nationals last season, pitching 182 innings.

The Mets continue to negotiate with Lowe and Perez.
