Rough start may be last for Redding

That day, he bruised his right elbow trying to field a hard chopper and departed. This time, Mets manager Jerry Manuel pulled Redding after Robinzon Diaz's RBI double with one out in the third gave Pittsburgh a 5-0 lead, although the Mets rallied for a 9-8 win in 10 innings.
With Oliver Perez scheduled to throw 85-90 pitches in a rehab game tonight for Triple-A Buffalo, Redding's showing could open the door for Perez to reclaim his rotation spot Wednesday against the Dodgers at Citi Field.
Manuel recently floated the idea of having Redding and Perez split the next turn - with one pitcher going five innings, the other four - but he seemed to backtrack yesterday morning, even before Redding took the mound, saying he was undecided. "I don't know," Manuel then added after Redding's outing. "That's still a ways away. I'll wait to see how (Perez) performs."
On the day major-league teams were eligible to sign this year's 16-year-old international free agents, the Mets came to terms with the son of former major-leaguer Ugueth Urbina, team officials indicated.
Juan Urbina, a 16-year-old Venezuelan left-handed pitcher, is expected to receive a signing bonus in the $1.2 million range. Ugueth Urbina spent 11 seasons in the majors, going 44-49 with a 3.45 ERA in 583 appearances (21 starts). He's currently in prison in Venezuela for attempted murder, although there is speculation he'll be freed soon and not have to serve a 14-year sentence.
Ryan Church started in center field for the second time this season. He shifted to right field in the eighth inning in place of Gary Sheffield, with the Mets protecting a two-run lead. Fernando Martinez entered in center field.
