LOWELL, Mass. - Joantoni Garcia's two-out single drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Lowell Spinners rallied to beat the Staten Island Yankees and closer Ronny Marte 6-5 last night at LeLacheur Park.

The second straight loss was tough to take for the 5-8 Baby Bombers, who led 3-0 and 5-3 early in the game. They fell six games behind the Brooklyn Cyclones, off to a torrid 11-2 start, in the New York-Penn League's McNamara Division standings.

Marte had been virtually untouchable over the first two weeks of the season, but ran into immediate trouble as he entered the game in the ninth with the Yankees leading, 5-4. Ryan Westmoreland opened with a single and scored the equalizer on a double by Chris McGuiness.

Two outs later, McGuiness scored from third on Garcia's liner up the middle.

Staten Island left-fielder Neil Medchill had given the Baby Bombers a 5-3 lead with his two-run homer in the sixth inning. It was his second homer of the season.

Rob Lyerly and DeAngelo Mack added RBI for the visitors.

Lowell scored three runs in the fifth to draw even, 3-3.

The Baby Bombers outhit the Spinners, but made three errors and paid for the defensive lapes with three unearned runs in the opening innings.

Staten Island starter Francsico Rondon was overpowering early, striking out eight of the 18 batters he faced. Rondon departed in the fifth inning.

The Baby Bombers used five pitchers who combined for 16 strikeouts while walking seven. - - -

NOTES: Lowell had its 351-game sellout streak snapped in Wednesday night's series opener when some standing-room-only tickets were left. The franchise had sold every available ticket to home games dating back to Aug. 3, 1999. The announced crowd was 4,903 instead of the customary 5,030. ...

The Yankees welcome the Spinners (Single-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox) to St. George this weekend for a July Fourth weekend series.

The Baby Bombers have a variety of events planned for the weekend, including fireworks tomorrow and a book signing with former New York Yankee Roy White on Sunday.

Tomorrow's game is a 7 p.m. scheduled start against the Spinners which will be followed by the fireworks show. There's also a special promotional feature for tomorrow's game, which you can find out more about on the team's Web site.

On Sunday, White will sign copies of his book, "Then Roy said to Mickey ... " The greatest Yankee stories ever told in the Staten Island Yankees team store from 3:45-5:15 p.m. For $25 you'll get a signed copy of the book from White, who played all of his 15 Major League seasons with the Bombers.
