Chase Utley likely to miss Opening Day

Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Thursday he anticipated All-Star second baseman Chase Utley would start the season on the disabled list, the Philadelphia Daily News reported.
Utley, who is suffering from patellar tendinitis in his right knee, has been extremely limited during Phillies' spring training.
"I would think so," Amaro said when asked if Utley would start the season on the disabled list. "I haven't seen him on the field yet, and we're a week away.
"It's a long-term process," Amaro added.
Utley has shown little progress since the Phillies shut him down after one week of spring training. The five-time All-Star told reporters last month that he has dealt with similar soreness during past seasons, but added it had typically gone away faster.
Utley has been limited to hitting, with the pain in his knee prohibiting him from the quick movements required in running and fielding.
The uncertainty over when the 32-year-old infielder might be able to return to action has led to the signing of former Mets second baseman Luis Castillo to a minor league contract. Wilson Valdez, who has hit .396 this spring, looks likely to become the starter on Opening Day.
The Phillies have faced a barrage of injury scares this spring. All-Stars Placido Polanco (elbow) and Brad Lidge (biceps tendinitis) have been limited in recent weeks. Polanco took batting practice Wednesday and felt ready to play, according to the Daily News. Lidge is scheduled to make his first appearance in nearly two weeks on Thursday against the Twins, the paper reported.

Phillies' top prospect Dominic Brown, who the Phillies hoped would be the replacement for Jayson Werth, has also been sidelined after fracturing his right hand earlier this month. He is expected to miss three to six weeks.
On Wednesday, veteran right-hander Roy Oswalt was hit in the back of the neck below his right ear by a liner off the bat of Manny Ramirez. Oswalt suffered a neck contusion, but an X-ray and a CT scan both came back negative, much to the Phillies' relief.
The Phillies enter the 2011 season looking to add to their four consecutive NL East titles. The ballclub kicks off its new season on April 1 against the Houston Astros.
