Source: Garza close to being a Cub
The Rays have agreed to send Garza and outfielder Fernando Perez to the Cubs as part of the deal, one source said.
In return, Tampa Bay will receive a prospect package that includes outfielder Brandon Guyer, right-handed starter Chris Archer, catcher Robinson Chirinos, infielder Hak-Ju Lee and reserve outfielder Sam Fuld, according to ESPNChicago.com.
Garza, the 2008 American League Championship Series MVP, will be a significant upgrade for the Chicago rotation. He went 15-10 with a 3.91 ERA last year while pitching for the Tampa Bay Rays in the toughest division in baseball.
The Cubs’ rotation will likely include Garza, Ryan Dempster, Randy Wells, Carlos Zambrano and Carlos Silva. Andrew Cashner, Tom Gorzelanny and Jeff Samardzija are options to start or pitch out of the bullpen.
The Rays, meanwhile, are likely to move Jeremy Hellickson into their rotation as a result of the deal. They should still have a very good starting staff, including David Price, Wade Davis, James Shields, Jeff Niemann and Hellickson.
