--C Carlos Santana, the Indians' catcher of the future and the Most Valuable Player in the Eastern League in 2009, will be sidelined for the next eight to 10 weeks while he recovers from surgery to remove a hamate bone from his right hand. It's a fairly routine procedure, but it requires a lengthy recovery period, which will probably prevent Santana from winning spot on the Indians' opening-day roster.

The switch-hitting Santana hit .290 with 23 home runs and 97 RBI at Akron in 2009. He is expected to begin the 2010 season at Class AAA Columbus.

--RHP Adam Miller, once considered the top prospect in the Indians' minor league system and one of the top pitching prospects in all of minor league baseball, could be looking at the end of his career. Miller recently underwent reconstructive surgery on the middle finger of his right hand. It's the fourth time in the last two years Miller has had the same surgery, and Indians officials say there is no timetable for when, or if, he will ever pitch again.

--New manager Manny Acta filled the final spot on his major league coaching staff by hiring Jon Nunnally as hitting coach. Nunnally, 38, had been a minor league hitting instructor in the Indians organization for the last three seasons, after retiring as a player following the 2006 season. In 2009 Nunnally was the hitting coach at Class AAA Columbus, which led the International League in hitting, and included OF/1B Jordan Brown, who won the IL batting crown by hitting .336.

Acta's coaching staff is now complete. In addition to Nunnally it includes pitching coach Tim Belcher, first-base coach and catching instructor Sandy Alomar Jr., third-base coach Steve Smith, bench coach Tim Tolman, and bullpen coach Scott Radinsky.

--Former Indians pitcher Charles Nagy has been named the pitching coach at Class AAA Columbus. Nagy, who spent 13 years pitching in the Indians' organization, was the Class AAA pitching coach for the Angels in 2007-08.

--RHP Hector Ambriz was selected by the Indians from Arizona with the fifth overall pick in the major league Rule 5 draft. Ambriz, 25, was a combined 12-11, 4.94 in 28 appearances (27 starts) at Class AAA and AA in 2009.

--LHP Chuck Lofgren was selected from the Indians by Milwaukee in the Rule 5 draft. Lofgren was once considered one of the Indians' top pitching prospects, but his career seemed to stall the last couple years. In a combined 25 starts at Class AA and AAA in 2009, Lofgren was 9-11, with a 4.15 ERA.

BY THE NUMBERS: 17 -- Number of years since the Indians last selected a player in the major league portion of the Rule 5 draft. When the Indians selected RHP Hector Ambriz in this year's Rule 5 it marked the first time they selected a player in the Rule 5, and didn't trade him, since they took RHP Mike Thomas from Montreal in 1991.
