Inge feeling some pain

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Detroit Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge said his knees are fine. Both have bothered him most of the season, and he aggravated the left knee while beating out an infield hit. Inge hit a game-winning homer in the ninth inning Sunday against the Astros in Houston. Inge became the first Tiger since Craig Monroe did it Aug. 30, 2006 at Yankee Stadium, Aug. 30, 2006 to hit a go-ahead homer with the club one out from losing. "He's one of the great guys you could ever manage," manager Jim Leyland said. "He's certainly having an All-Star caliber first half." Inge is leading the team with 51 RBIs and shares the home run lead at 18 with Curtis Granderson. He started Monday against Oakland and is the only Tigers player to appear in all 76 games. He came out of the game in the seventh inning when Don Kelly took over at third base. "I'm probably going to rest him a game out here," Leyland said. "He's hurting." Leyland said he can play Ryan Raburn, Kelly or Ramon Santiago at third. Granderson and Inge are the first Tigers teammates with 18-plus homers before the All-Star break since Mickey Tettleton (24) and Cecil Fielder (23) in 1993. French to start vs. Twins Leyland said he won't use Luke French, a left-hander who joined the team Monday, in relief after today's game in Oakland. He is scheduled to start Friday at Minnesota against the Twins. French replaces Alfredo Figaro in the rotation. Figaro was sent down to Toledo on Monday. French was 2-1 with a 1.66 ERA in his past six starts at Toledo. He had 41 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings. He's 4-4 with a 2.98 ERA at Triple-A. He pitched three innings earlier this season for the Tigers . Laird's back spasms end Laird's back spasms and tightness are gone and he's almost back to normal after catching Sunday in Houston. "They put some hot rock thing that was wrapped around me on the plane that really helped," Laird said. Houston starter Felipe Paulino limited Detroit to one run on three hits and struck out nine in the game Laird came out of Saturday in the first inning. "I said it was a remarkable recovery by Gerald Laird," Leyland joked. "He got rid of Paulinoitis in 12 hours. Obviously, I was kidding." Robertson to have surgery Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said pitcher Nate Robertson was examined Monday in Detroit by the club's orthopedic physician, Stephen Lemos, and will have surgery today to remove a fibrous mass from his left elbow. Cabrera 'grills' one Miguel Cabrera hit a batting practice homer in a barbeque pit in the left-field foul area at the Coliseum that made a noise like an explosion and disrupted the grillers. Athletics fans cheered loudly and tossed the ball back on the field.
