First things first for Boston
(Boston Globe) The concept of "first" is a problematic one for Boston these days. One, they're no longer in it, and, two, they're getting no production from it. To address these ordinal deficiencies, the Sox may be mulling over a trade for a new first baseman. The B Globe reports that GM Mike Port (Miss Jackson, if you're nasty), is weary of the banjo-wielding exploits of , and . (Note to Port: Perhaps Daubach would be a bit more productive if he weren't moonlighting as the star of HBO's hot new urban drama, The Wire.) "The easy solution would be if a would get going or a would get untracked," Port said, "but as a subplot to that, we are looking around otherwise."

As he looks around, what he sees, according to the Globe, is an expensive and a dubious . Neither of those seems likely to happen. For the wishcasters among us, there's the scuttle. The Boston Herald's Jeff Horrigan thinks such a move makes perfect sense. Cleveland is certainly willing to part with Thome, and the , the other team most often rumored to be eyeballing him, are too busy feigning destitution. Others could join the fray, but the fact that Thome is eligible for free agency this winter will dissuade many. The Tribe begins a three-game set in Boston tomorrow, and Thome and Sox manager Grady Little (a former Cleveland bench coach) will play a round of golf today. Mix in the fact that the Sox are looking up at the Yanks for the first time this season, and you may have the impetus for something.

The problem will be getting Cleveland to settle for Boston's non-prospects. They could probably put together a reasonably attractive package of young arms, but who can't do that? They just pawned off one of the best young arms to San Diego as part of the deal, and they have no position prospects who are worth the keystrokes. Supposedly, Boston's willing to part with the vaguely annoying , but he's been mentioned as part of a possible deal. It's uncertain whether they'd part with Nixon for a player who could walk at season's end if he chose to do so. The Sox had best hope there's little interest elsewhere, which would allow them to benefit from the buyer's market.

The have acquired lefty reliever and minor-league right-hander from the for right-handed prospects Brad Baker and Dan Giese ... The are reportedly close to signing their top pick from this month's draft, South Carolina shortstop Drew Meyer. Meyer will reportedly ink it up for a $1.875 million signing bonus ... Commence New England hand-wringing ... The say they would've walked had he come up to bat on final time on Saturday night. Castillo was on deck when the winning run scored on a sac fly, and his hitting streak was halted at 35 games ... The SF Chronic reports that Yanks manager Joe Torre, who'll be managing the AL All-Star Team this year and selecting its pitching staff, says won't be on his roster. Torre has a policy of not picking pitchers who start on the Sunday preceding an All-Star Game. "I don't want to be responsible for pitching a guy with no rest, and if I take one (deserving Sunday starter), I have to take all of them," Torre said ... The may have interest in trading for D-Rays outfielder .
