Here is the latest on the trade front based on what major-league sources are telling FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi:
  • With the news that Joe Crede's right shoulder will be examined Thursday by Dr. Lewis Yocum, the Twins' search for infield help could become more intense. The Twins have already discussed shortstop Orlando Cabrera with the A's, sources said Wednesday, and he might be the best fit of all.
  • There is no match between the A's and Tigers for Oakland left fielder Matt Holliday, a major league source said. The A's gave the Tigers a list of prospects that they would want to discuss for Holliday, but the talks failed to progress.
  • The Red Sox's trade for first baseman Adam LaRoche should eliminate any chance of them trading for Indians catcher Victor Martinez.
    The Indians, however, continue to speak with clubs that are interested in both Martinez and left-hander Cliff Lee. "Things are changing rapidly," says one source with knowledge of the Indians' thinking. The Phillies, Rays, Brewers and Dodgers are on Lee, and the Rangers have expressed continued interest.
  • The Rangers have "no money," multiple sources say, but Lee — earning $5.75 million this season with a $9 million club option for next season — is relatively affordable. A trade of first baseman Hank Blalock, who is earning $6 million, would help clear payroll. The Red Sox discussed Blalock with the Rangers before obtaining LaRoche.
  • While the Phillies remain interested in Lee, they do not consider him as good a fit as Blue Jays right-hander Roy Halladay. The Phillies currently have three other lefties in their rotation: Cole Hamels, Jamie Moyer and J.A. Happ. While Happ could be included in a trade, Halladay would offer greater contrast to Hamels.
  • The Rays are engaged in a whirlwind of activity, investigating Lee, Halladay and numerous other options — "major, major stuff," according to one source. Payroll flexibility remains a significant obstacle, and the Rays might need to move left-hander Scott Kazmir or another high-priced player to clear room for a major acquisition. There are no indications, however, that the Rays are discussing trades involving Kazmir, who is earning $6 million this season, $8 million in 2010 and $12 million in '11 with a $13.5 million or $2.5 million buyout for '12.
  • The Angels, after inquiring on Halladay and Diamondbacks right-hander Dan Haren, are focused almost entirely on adding bullpen help. Orioles closer George Sherrill and Indians right-hander Rafael Betancourt are among the Angels' options. Another Orioles reliever who could be in play, though not necessarily for the Angels: Left-hander Mark Hendrickson, who has a 2.53 ERA and .633 opponents' OPS in 21 relief appearances. The Rockies, badly in need of bullpen help, are among the teams talking with the Orioles about right-hander Danys Baez.
  • The Pirates continue to listen to offers for second baseman Freddy Sanchez, shortstop Jack Wilson, left-handed reliever John Grabow and right-handed closer Matt Capps. Moving left-hander Paul Maholm or Zach Duke would be "very tough" for the club, one source says, unless the Pirates acquired a major-league ready starting pitcher plus additional prospects in return. The Pirates like the foundation of their future rotation — Maholm, Duke and right-handers Ross Ohlendorf and Charlie Morton.
  • The Giants are less willing to move left-hander Jonathan Sanchez due to the uncertainty surrounding lefty Randy Johnson, who is on the disabled list with a shoulder strain. Johnson, who turns 46 on Sept. 10, will resume throwing once he is pain-free. He is close to that point, one source says.
