The Dodgers intend to send Ramirez to the White Sox on Monday, either through a trade or by assigning his contract, according to a major-league source.
Ramirez is owed more than $4 million in salary, much of it deferred. If the teams are unable to complete a trade, the Dodgers can simply assign Ramirez to the White Sox on a waiver claim.
The teams are talking but have yet to reach a final agreement on the details of a transaction, according to one source with knowledge of the discussions.
The White Sox were awarded the claim on Ramirez on Friday. The teams have until Tuesday to complete a trade, but the Dodgers are under no obligation to wait that long.
Ramirez did not start Sunday for the fourth straight game. He has started only three of the Dodgers’ eight games since coming off the disabled list last Saturday.
The White Sox nonetheless want Ramirez, viewing him as an upgrade in the DH spot over their current combination of Mark Teahen, Mark Kotsay and Andruw Jones.
Ramirez must waive his no-trade clause to complete any transaction. He might want compensation for his approval, but the Dodgers could simply bench him for the rest of the season if he balked at a deal, diminishing his value as he prepared to enter the free-agent market.
