Byrd hospitalized after being hit by pitch
The 33-year-old All-Star, who was hit by pitches twice on Friday, was taken to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary for examination.
"He took it pretty flush, from what I heard," Cubs manager Mike Quade said. "It's something that's dangerous enough that they're going to take a good look at it."
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Byrd was to undergo a number of tests, including CT scans, and was being monitored for concussion-related symptoms.
''I can't get Marlon off my mind,'' added Quade. ''This is not a pitcher's arm that's a little sore. This is serious stuff.''
The Cubs were expecting to get an update of Byrd's condition Sunday.
According to MLB.com, Byrd has now been hit by pitches five times since May 11.
''I don't want to believe it was intentional,'' Quade said. ''That doesn't necessarily make it right.''
