Mets send Burnitz to LA; Dodgers sign Rickey Henderson

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - The New York have traded outfielder to Los Angeles in exchange for three minor league players. The also received cash considerations in the deal. "Jeromy's offensive output throughout his career speaks for itself," said executive vice president and general manager Dan Evans. "I believe he will complement our offense well and will add some power to the middle of our order." The also announced the signing of veteran outfielder Rickey Henderson. "With Rickey, we're gaining a player who understands what it takes to win at the major league level and we feel he will be a valuable addition to the team," said Evans. Burnitz, who is still owed half of his $11.5-million salary for the rest of this season, batted .274 with 18 home runs and 45 RBI in 2003 for New York. The had acquired Burnitz from Milwaukee in a three-team trade on January 21, 2002. Burnitz, who has 225 career home runs, hit just .215 in his first season with New York. The 34-year-old, who began his career with the in 1993, has also played for Cleveland. The sent the infielder Victor Diaz, who is hitting .291 with 54 RBI in 86 games in Double-A this year. Double-A righthander Joselo Diaz and Single-A righty Kole Strayhorn, who is 5-2 with a 2.93 ERA and nine saves this year, also head to New York. The deal comes less than two weeks after the traded second baseman to the Chicago in exchange for three prospects. ' closer has also been the object of trade talks, as the attempt to shed salary and restock their depleted minor league system after several years of big spending on free agents. Burnitz is expected to replace leftfielder , who underwent season- ending knee surgery Friday. The hope the left-handed hitting Burnitz, who averaged 34 home runs and 107 RBIs from 1998-2001 in Milwaukee, will help kick-start an offense that is last in the National League in runs scored. Henderson had been playing for the Newark Bears of the Independent Atlantic League, where his .339 average was second highest in the league. The 10-time Major League All-Star was recently selected to the Atlantic League All-Star Game, where he was voted Most Valuable Player. In 56 games with the Bears, Henderson has eight homers, 33 RBI and nine stolen bases. Henderson is baseballâ¿¿s all-time leader in runs (2,288), stolen bases (1,403) and walks (2,179) and becomes the active leader in hits (3,040). He will be appearing in his 25th season in the majors, and will wear his ninth different uniform.
