--RHP Justin Duchscherer is getting interest from numerous teams that would use him as a starter, according to Duchscherer's agent, Damon Lapa. Lapa said that the A's are still a possibility for the two-time All-Star and that he has continued to have talks with Duchscherer's longtime team. Duchscherer has missed much of the past two seasons with injuries. He was out all of last year, first with an elbow problem and then for treatment for clinical depression.

--RHP Bobby Cassevah was selected from the Angels in the Rule 5 draft. Cassevah, a 24-year-old sinkerballer, has a good shot at a spot in Oakland's bullpen, replacing RHP Santiago Casilla, who was released to make room for Cassevah on the 40-man roster. Cassevah has allowed six homers and induced 41 double-play grounders in six minor league seasons.

--RHP Santiago Casilla was released in order to make room on the 40-man roster for Rule 5 draftee Bobby Cassevah. Casilla was not expected to be tendered a contract later in the week after failing to capitalize on the enormous potential he flashed at times. Minor injuries set him back in each of the past few seasons and in parts of six seasons with Oakland, the reliever compiled a 5.11 ERA.

--RHP Beau Vaughan, 28, was selected in the Triple-A portion of the Rule 5 draft. Vaughan went 7-2 with a 3.77 ERA last year for Texas' Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Oklahoma City teams.

--OF Grant Desme was named to the Arizona Fall League's all-prospect team. Desme, the league MVP, had 11 homers to lead the AFL and he drove in 27 runs, second best in the league. He's expected to get an invite to big-league spring training.

--INF Jemile Weeks, younger brother of Milwaukee's Rickie Weeks, was named to the Arizona Fall League's all-prospect team. Weeks hit .241 with five steals and 19 runs in 21 games. He also had six doubles and four triples in that span.

BY THE NUMBERS: 88 -- RBI by A's catcher Kurt Suzuki, last year's team high. Hideki Matsui, a potential Oakland free agent target, had 28 homers and 90 RBI for the Yankees last year; both numbers would have topped Oakland.
