Showalter playing down reported slights

SARASOTA, Fla.
Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter was focusing on the team's battle with the Minnesota Twins on Friday, after downplaying his own twin attacks on Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein.
Showalter made headlines after reportedly slighting the American League East pair in a magazine interview. But Thursday, he told The Baltimore Sun that they were probably born out of "envy or something."
The former Yankees manager said his memory of the comments, which appear in the April issue of Men's Journal, was hazy.
"We were sitting down at a table laughing about different stuff, and three or four months later, somebody brings it up as a quote, and it's newsworthy," he said. "I can't remember if I said it or not, but I am 55 years old, I probably did."
He added, "Maybe it is envy or something on my part. But obviously, you all know what I think of Derek and the success the Red Sox have had. Hopefully, we can get to their level one day."
Showalter said Thursday that he was sure Jeter would not hold a grudge.
"No, I know Derek," Showalter said. "He knows there are a lot of things you talk about in clubhouses and what have you, jokingly, kind [of] matter-of-factly and everybody understands it within the arena. But when they get out there publicly, it's not particularly comfortable."
In the Men's Journal interview, Showalter reportedly said, "The first time we went to Yankee Stadium, I screamed at Derek Jeter from the dugout. Our guys are thinking, 'Wow, he's screaming at Derek Jeter.' Well, he's always jumping back from balls just off the plate. I know how many calls that team gets -- and yes, he [ticks] me off."
The two-time AL Manager of the Year followed that remark up with a sarcastic one about Epstein.

"I'd like to see how smart Theo Epstein is with the Tampa Bay [Rays] payroll," Showalter reportedly said. "You got Carl Crawford 'cause you paid more than anyone else, and that's what makes you smarter? That's why I like whipping their butt. It's great, knowing those guys with the $205 million payroll are saying, 'How the hell are they beating us?'"
The Yankees' payroll last season was $206 million, while the Red Sox's was $162 million. The Orioles' was $81 million.
Showalter, who took over the Orioles in the middle of last season, served as the Yankees' manager from 1992-95 before being fired by owner George Steinbrenner.
