The Phillies figure to do more tweaking than overhauling during the offseason. GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has prioritized finding help for the bullpen and the bench. And, as always, he'd like to acquire additional pitching depth to give the Phillies more options in case of injuries and ineffectiveness.

BIGGEST NEEDS: With only Brad Lidge, J.C. Romero and Ryan Madson under contract, the Phillies will address their bullpen. They could opt to re-sign free agent RHP Chan Ho Park and veteran LHP Scott Eyre, who says he will retire unless the Phillies want him back. The bullpen was the club's biggest strength in 2008, but in 2009, every reliever except RHP Ryan Madson wound up on the disabled list at least once.

ARRIVALS: 1B-OF Ross Gload (free agent from Marlins, pending physical), C Brian Schneider (free agent from Mets), 3B Placido Polanco (free agent from Tigers), INF Juan Castro (free agent from Dodgers).

DEPARTURE: 3B Pedro Feliz (free agent, signed with Astros).

FREE AGENTS: RHP Brett Myers, RHP Pedro Martinez, LHP Scott Eyre, RHP Chan Ho Park, OF Matt Stairs, INF Miguel Cairo, C Paul Bako, INF Eric Bruntlett.

The Phillies may have interest in re-signing Martinez, Eyre, Park and Stairs. Myers was informed after the World Series that he won't be back. Bruntlett refused an assignment to the minors and chose to become a free agent.

ARBITRATION-ELIGIBLE: RHP Joe Blanton, RHP Clay Condrey, RHP Chad Durbin, C Carlos Ruiz, CF Shane Victorino.

Victorino and Ruiz are candidates for multiyear contracts, although free agency isn't imminent for either player, leaving the Phillies with little urgency to make a deal. Blanton made $5,475,000 last season, and he could see his salary rise to about $7 million.

IN LIMBO: Free agent OF Matt Stairs, one of the heroes of the Phillies' 2008 championship team, remains of interest to the team. However, Stairs may have to settle for a minor league contract.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Brad Lidge (right elbow surgery in November 2009) might be a week or two behind the other pitchers in spring training.

LF Raul Ibanez (sports hernia surgery in November 2009) is expected to be ready for spring training.

LHP Scott Eyre (sore left elbow) was expected to have a "loose body," likely a bone chip, surgically removed in the offseason.

LHP Jamie Moyer (groin/abdominal surgery in October 2009) will have arthroscopic left knee surgery in January. He might not be ready for the start of spring training.
