Former Red Sox utility infielder Nick Green signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers yesterday. The deal includes a spring training invite, which Green will use to try and land a backup role with the National League club.
``One of the big things was I wanted to go back to the National League, and I have connections with (Dodgers manager Joe) Torre and (coaches Don) Mattingly and (Larry) Bowa,'' Green said. ``I'm excited to get back to see those guys, work with those guys, have a chance to make the team, and maybe play a little more in the National League.''
Green continues to recover from offseason back surgery and still is getting his legs back into shape. He hopes to be ready for spring training next month.
``I had a blast,'' he said of his season with the Sox. ``It's a team I've wanted to play for for a while. Ever since I came into the league and first played in Fenway, I wanted to get an opportunity to play in this environment. I'm so grateful. It worked out well for me to get an opportunity to actually play.''
Dice internalized
Daisuke Matsuzaka recently told a Japanese magazine, Friday, that he suffered a quadriceps injury while preparing for the 2009 World Baseball Classic, but the pitcher did not inform the Red Sox. In comments translated by the Boston Globe, he said he hurt himself while training, then took anti-inflammatories and continued to throw.
``I didn't tell the trainers,'' Matsuzaka said in the magazine. ``Fortunately, I was in charge of my own training, so if it started to hurt, I could adjust to not hurt myself. But pitching while hiding the injury was very difficult. Even when I didn't feel the pain, my body was holding back because it sensed the danger. So, my pitching motion was more of standing straight up and throwing with my upper body, relying on my shoulder strength more than usual.''
The Red Sox and Matsuzaka have had communication issues in the past, but they seemed to be resolved during the season.
``I assure you that the (2010) season will be a great season,'' Matsuzaka told Friday. ``I am going to redeem what I lost in 2009.''
Developmental stage
The Red Sox began their rookie development program, with 12 of the organization's top prospects in town for the two-week program, which helps prepare them for big league life.
The players: pitchers Randor Bierd, Felix Doubront, Casey Kelly, Ryne Miller, Junichi Tazawa and Kyle Weiland; catcher Luis Exposito; infielders Jose Iglesias and Yamaico Navarro; outfielders Ryan Kalish, Che-Hsuan Lin and Josh Reddick. . . . Chris Carpenter, the St. Louis Cardinals pitcher and New Hampshire native, was named the 2009 winner of the Tony Conigliaro Award for overcoming adversity.
