ROCKIES Torrealba looking at $5 million offer

INDIANAPOLIS - The Rockies are trying to bridge the financial gap on a two-year deal to retain catcher Yorvit Torrealba, with Miguel Olivo emerging as a fallback plan if they fail. Torrealba wants to return to the Rockies , but only at the right price. This much has been gleaned from multiple sources: The Rockies' current offer is for more than the $4.5 million that Torrealba turned down last month and less than the $6 million that Pudge Rodriguez signed for Monday with the Washington Nationals. The sides have talked enough that something could come together quickly, possibly with a phone call today. It's likely Torrealba will sign somewhere - the Mets and Giants are also in on him - before the meetings end Thursday. Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd made it clear Tuesday that he wants Torrealba back and said the club "has overextended" in its proposal to the popular catcher. He would not reveal the offer, but it's believed to be for roughly $5 million. If the Rockies are unable to compromise with Torrealba, they are prepared to offer Olivo a two-year deal. Olivo hit .249 with 23 home runs and 65 RBIs last season in Kansas City. The Rockies also have former Cherry Creek star Josh Bard on the radar, though they would be looking at a one-year deal for him. In October, Torrealba finished playing out a two-year, $7.25 million deal signed after the 2007 World Series berth. He currently has at least one strong offer for one year with another team. As an indication of his respect for the organization and desire to stay in Colorado, Torrealba will give the Rockies the last chance to match any offer. The Mets are the biggest threat to the Rockies . They have money and opportunity. Torrealba's agent has a grievance pending against the Mets over a failed contract in 2007, but the sides have made peace. The Royals also have interest in Torrealba. Footnotes. After discussions Tuesday on a two-year, $7.5 million deal for Rafael Betancourt sputtered, the club is focusing on a one-year contract for the reliever. He should make approximately $5 million in arbitration. ? O'Dowd is still looking to reinforce his bullpen, targeting Jose Contreras. O'Dowd did say, however, that the return of a healthy and effective Manuel Corpas could be the key to the relief corps. ? Agent Barry Meister said Clint Barmes remains open-minded about a multiyear deal, but the sides aren't close to any agreement.
