Reds finish off sweep of Brewers

MILWAUKEE - In his pregame sewing circle with the beat writers, Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker lamented that his bullpen was shredded after two extra-inning games and he needed something special from starter Justin Lehr. "C'mon, Lehr," he said to himself before sending Lehr out to face the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday, Aug. 27, in Miller Park. It couldn't have been worse in the first inning. As Baker squirmed in the dugout like a worm shriveling in the sun, Lehr gave up four runs. But suddenly, Lehr morphed into Sandy Koufax while his teammates ripped Milwaukee starter David Bush en route to an 8-5 win and a three-game sweep. The Reds scored one in the fourth, five in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh while Lehr at one point retired 10 in a row. He held the Brewers to no more runs and three hits until he gave up a two-out home run to Mike Cameron in the eighth and his day was done. "It didn't start out good for Lehr - he was getting the ball up, couldn't get it down," Baker said. "The last thing we needed was a short outing. He gutted it out bigtime and really got it together." Lehr, 3-1 with a 4.19 ERA, formerly pitched in Milwaukee's bullpen and was thrilled to beat his old team, especially after a troubled start. "That first inning was bad, nothing really good about it except I used only 17 pitches to give up those four runs," he said. Baker was ecstatic with the comeback. "Can't tell you the last time we came back like that," Baker said. "We got big two-out hits in the fifth inning and the real at-bat was Lehr's at-bat, when he fouled off a number of pitches and then got a walk." After Lehr's two-out walk came a single from Drew Stubbs, a run-scoring double from Paul Janish, a run-scoring double from Brandon Phillips and a tworun single by Scott Rolen that put the Reds ahead 6-4.
