Seattle Mariners Roster Report
SportsXchange Feed
The Mariners entered the offseason feeling mostly positive about the progress they'd made in 2009. From a 101-loss team that bickered and was in complete disarray, Seattle had become a place where the players were happy and, more significantly, a place where the team had a chance to win on any given day.
BIGGEST NEEDS: TheMariners have to have a more productive offense. The DHs, Mike Sweeney and Ken Griffey Jr. , hit well late in the year but not much the first four months. A power-hitting left fielder would be a positive addition.
ARRIVALS: INFChone Figgins (free agent from Angels ), RHP Yusmeiro Petit (claimed off waivers from Diamondbacks ).
DEPARTURES: CKenji Johjima (opted out of contract, signed with Japanese team), LHP Justin Thomas (claimed off waivers by Pirates ), RHP Chris Jakubauskas (claimed off waivers by Pirates ).
FREE AGENTS: LHPErik Bedard , RHP Miguel Batista , DH Mike Sweeney , 3B Adrian Beltre , 1B Russell Branyan , OF Endy Chavez , SS Josh Wilson .
TheMariners can save a lot of money here and possibly give some of it to a big-name free agent from elsewhere. Wilson refused an outright assignment to the minors and became a free agent.
ARBITRATION-ELIGIBLE: RHPDavid Aardsma , CF Franklin Gutierrez , RHP Felix Hernandez , OF Ryan Langerhans , RHP Mark Lowe .
IN LIMBO: 1BRussell Branyan , a free agent, is still of interest to the Mariners , but he is looking for a multiyear deal.
MEDICAL WATCH:
OFEndy Chavez (right knee surgery in July 2009) is not expected to be fully healthy until early next season.
LHPErik Bedard (left shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum in August 2009) could be ready when spring training begins.
RHPSean White (right shoulder tendinitis) should be ready to go in the spring.
RHPCarlos Silva (sore right shoulder) missed most of the season before coming back to pitch a couple of innings in September. He will pitch in winter ball to try to build his arm strength back up.
DHKen Griffey Jr. (arthroscopic left knee surgery in October 2009) should be healthy in time for spring training.
CRob Johnson (right hip surgery in October 2009, left hip surgery in November 2009, right wrist surgery in November 2009) might not be ready for opening day.
