Sources: Mariners still active on many fronts

INDIANAPOLIS

Near the end of the same week in which they finalized an agreement with Chone Figgins, the Mariners remained active on a number of fronts:
  • Most notably, major-league sources said they are (again) exploring an Adrian Gonzalez trade with the Padres, renewing a pursuit that began prior to the July non-waiver trade deadline. While some in the industry question whether Jed Hoyer would want to trade Gonzalez in his first major transaction as the new San Diego general manager, one source said Thursday that the slugging first baseman "could be had in the right deal." Still, it doesn't appear that talks between Seattle and San Diego are advancing toward a deal.
  • Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik acknowledged that the team remains interested in signing Adrian Beltre, the top free-agent third baseman still available. Figgins is willing to accommodate Beltre by moving to second base, sources say. That scenario would involve trading second baseman Jose Lopez or allowing first baseman Russell Branyan to sign elsewhere. Beltre spent the past five seasons in Seattle, hitting .266 and averaging roughly 21 home runs and 79 RBIs per year. The Mariners also place a high value on his defense, which has earned him two Gold Gloves. Zduriencik described the dialogue with Beltre (and agent Scott Boras) as "open-ended."
    "Adrian realizes how we feel about him," Zduriencik said Thursday morning. "He enjoyed his time with us. As we move forward, like any club, we have a few holes to fill. "Certainly, he's an option for us. I don't know how it's going to end up." The Red Sox, on the verge of trading Mike Lowell to Texas, appear to be the Mariners' biggest competition on Beltre. Giants general manager Brian Sabean indicated Thursday that he would like to sign Beltre but has doubts about affordability. Sabean said Thursday that he's not negotiating with Beltre "right now."
  • One person familiar with the team's plans said the Mariners haven't ruled themselves out on free-agent sluggers Jason Bay and Matt Holliday. As of Thursday morning, Seattle officials didn't believe that either left fielder was close to signing.
  • Some people in the industry believe Seattle might even have a chance to pursue Toronto ace Roy Halladay. The question is whether Halladay, who lives in the Tampa Bay area, would waive his no-trade clause to pitch in the other corner of the country. When asked if the Mariners were involved in the Halladay market, one source said, "I think Roy Halladay determines who's involved in the Roy Halladay market."
