TRADE BRINGS BAT: Lincecum fans 15

SAN FRANCISCO The Giants didn't get the most notable power hitter on the trade market Monday. But they didn't give up their most notable pitching prospects, either. Addressing a need for an infielder with a big bat, the Giants acquired first baseman Ryan Garko from the Cleveland Indians for minor-league left-hander Scott Barnes before the start of an emotional 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at AT&T Park. Then again, the Giants usually don't require a lot of power when Tim Lincecum pitches at home. Lincecum set a career-high with 15 strikeouts while ending the Giants' two-game slide and improving to 11-3. Three times previously, Lincecum had struck out 13. Before the game, the Giants honored Sue Burns, the team's senior general partner, with a 20-minute ceremony. Burns died of cancer on July 19. Garko, a former Stanford standout, was hitting .285 with 11 homers and 39 RBI in 78 games. Garko had improved his trade value in the past 23 games, however, by posting a mark of .349 with five homers and 11 RBI. He was scratched from the Indians' lineup for Monday's game against the Los Angeles Angels and was told of the trade roughly an hour before the first pitch. Giants general manager Brian Sabean said he envisions having Garko on the team next season and that he hoped the addition would aid in the development of first baseman Travis Ishikawa. With Garko on board, it's unclear how much playing time Ishikawa will receive. Garko, who's eligible for arbitration after season, also can play the outfield. "He can drive in a run, and he can hit a three-run homer," said Sabean, who added that he might not be done dealing. "Hopefully he can do that here." The addition figures to be a shot in the arm for a Giants offense that came into Monday's game 29th in the major leagues in home runs (64), 28th in slugging percentage (.382) and 27th in RBI (366). The Giants were hitting .176 (15-for-85) with runners in scoring position in their 12 games before Monday and not coincidentally, went 3-7 on their just-completed road trip. They trail Colorado by one game in the National League wild-card standings. Pablo Sandoval's 15 home runs lead the Giants , followed by Bengie Molina's 11 and Aaron Rowand's nine. Against the Pirates on Monday, the Giants had three extra base hits, including a double by Molina in the bottom of the first inning that scored Sandoval and gave San Francisco a 1-0 lead. One inning later, an Andres Torres triple to right-center that fell between outfielders Andrew McCutchen and Garrett Jones scored Juan Uribe and Lincecum. Randy Winn capped the rally with a single that scored Torres. Remarkably, it was just the second time the Giants have scored four or more runs in a game since the All-Star Break. Garko should help in that respect, but the Giants still could be looking for another hitter. Washington outfielder Josh Willingham who hit two grand slams Monday -and former NL batting champ Freddy Sanchez, who was out of the Pirates' lineup, have been a among names linked to the Giants . Barnes, 21, was 12-3 with a 2.85 ERA in San Jose. He led the California League in wins, was second in ERA and fourth with 99 strikeouts. Barnes, who is 6-foot-4, was an eighth-round pick last year and was listed as the Giants ninth-best prospect by Baseball America at the start of the season. The other off-the-field news involved mourning. The Giants had a private remembrance for Burns, 58, whose usual seat right beside the Giants dugout was adorned with a home Giants jersey that had the number '1' on it and 'GMENMOM' on the nameplate. "When I first came over here and first met her, she made you feel comfortable and welcome," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said before the game. "And she did that with everybody.
