Tampa Bay Devil Rays Team Report - August 9

(Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Devil Rays try to stay on the winning track this evening when they open a four-game set with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Tampa's hopes will rest on the left arm of veteran John Halama, who is 5-5 on the season with a 4.39 ERA. Halama did not receive a decision against the Red Sox in his last start on Wednesday, as he yielded four runs - two earned - on six hits in six innings of his team's 5-4 win. For his career the 32-year-old Halama is 2-4 against the Red Sox with a 3.39 ERA in 15 games, nine of which have been starts. The Devil Rays won on Sunday, as B.J. Upton's first career RBI snapped a sixth-inning tie and propelled the Devil Rays to a 5-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Tropicana Field. Rob Bell (5-5) tossed seven strong innings for the victory. He allowed only one unearned run on six hits and a walk, striking out six. Danys Baez worked out of mild trouble in the ninth for his 24th save. Upton and Rey Sanchez each collected two hits and a run scored to help the Devil Rays break even in the four-game set. Upton, the team's top pick in the 2002 draft, was recalled last week and struggled with only two hits in his first 14 at-bats. Boston has won seven of its nine matchups with the Devil Rays this season, including all three played in Beantown. The Red Sox are also a dominating 49-17 in this series since the start of the 2001 season. The Devil Rays have posted a 19-32 mark on the road. Tonight begins a stretch where the Rays will play 27 of 39 games away from home.
