--LHP Clay Rapada was acquired from Detroit for a player to be named or cash. Rapada, 28, was out of options in Detroit and was about to be removed from the major league roster. In Texas, he will get a chance to win a job as a reliever. Rapada, a side-armer, has held lefties to a .235 batting average in parts of three seasons with the Chicago Cubs and Tigers.

--LHP Ben Snyder, acquired from Baltimore after the Rule 5 draft, was perhaps the Rangers' most intriguing left-handed pitching acquisition. Snyder, 24, was selected by Baltimore with the third pick in the Rule 5 draft and sent to Texas as the player to be named in the Kevin Millwood-for-Chris Ray deal. Snyder held lefties to a .146 batting average in Double-A last year for the San Francisco organization. He struck out 57 left-handed hitters and walked just 10.

--C Jarrod Saltalamacchia's uncertain health has made catching a significant pursuit for the Rangerst. Saltalamacchia stopped his winter league rehab from Thoracic Outlet Syndrome shoulder surgery after just two games because of soreness. He was to take the final three weeks of December off, then start throwing again in January. The Rangers had some interest in bringing back Ivan Rodriguez, but he got a two-year deal from Baltimore, or signing Jason Kendall, but he received a two-year offer from Kansas City, as insurance in case Saltalamacchia is not ready. The Rangers want a catcher who could carry the load if Saltalamacchia doesn't recover. They view Taylor Teagarden strictly as a backup.

--Rangers manager Ron Washington said he intends to play OF Julio Borbon in center and OF Josh Hamilton in left. Nelson Cruz will remain in right. Borbon, who will maintain rookie status going into 2010, started only three games in center in 2009. He was used primarily as a DH and as a left fielder.

--LHP C.J. Wilson still is being considered by the Rangers for their rotation. Wilson started six games in 2005 but has been used in a variety of bullpen roles since. He will prepare to be stretched out during spring training, and the Rangers then will make a determination on where he is most needed.

BY THE NUMBERS: 62-63 -- Rangers' record in RHP Kevin Millwood's 125 starts over the four seasons he was with the team. In the same time frame, RHP Rich Harden's teams went 43-24 in his starts.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's something we're taking a serious look at. If the issue was a spot in the outfield or bullpen, you'd have some depth. But industry-wide, catching is sparse." -- Rangers GM Jon Daniels on the team's pursuit of catching depth as insurance in case C Jarrod Saltalamacchia is not ready for the season. The Rangers still have Taylor Teagarden on the roster but want someone who can start if Saltalamacchia is out.
