--OF Joey Gathright signed with the Blue Jays. Gathright, 28, has played six years in the majors and appeared in 17 games with the Boston Red Sox this season. Gathright also spent time in 2009 at Triple-A Norfolk, hitting .329 with 20 RBI in 80 games in the Baltimore Orioles' system.

--If the Jays make a potential trade of Roy Halladay with the Angels, they will find themselves with two everyday shortstops in Erick Aybar and Alex Gonzalez, a free agent they recently signed to a one-year, $2.75 million contract with a $2.5 million option for 2011. If that scenario happens, the Jays would try to deal Gonzalez.

--RHP Zech Zinicola was selected by Toronto from the Washington Nationals in the Rule 5 draft. Zinicola, 24, opened the 2009 season at the Double-A level with Harrisburg of the Eastern League, where he posted a 1-1 record with a 1.74 ERA and five saves in 17 relief appearances. In 26 games at Triple-A Syracuse he was 0-1 with a 7.56 ERA. "He's a really good guy to take a shot at to see if we can get a back-end piece for the major league bullpen," said Dana Brown, a special assistant to GM Alex Anthopoulos. In the minor league phase of the draft, the Jays selected RHP Ruben De La Rosa, also from Washington.

--Manager Cito Gaston went through a number of rookie starters in 2009 because of a number of injuries. Looking ahead to 2010 and assuming that RHP Roy Halladay will be traded, Gaston was asked how many locks he had for his rotation. "I've got one, Ricky Romero," he replied. "You have what you have. We're going to have a lot of young guys with Halladay not being there, that's a problem that we're going to have."

--The Jays are in need of a No. 1 catcher and it won't be free agent Rod Barajas, who declined their one-year arbitration offer. The lone catcher on their roster is last season's backup, Raul Chavez. Two players the Jays have reported to be interested in are free agent Torvit Torrealba and Pittsburgh catcher Ryan Doumit.

BY THE NUMBERS: 9 -- The number of selections the Jays will have in the first three rounds of this year's free agent player draft because of their own picks and the compensatory picks they'll receive for having free agents Marco Scutaro (Boston) and C Rod Barajas (yet to sign) sign elsewhere.
