Former Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb is officially retiring from baseball, according to his agents at Millennium Sports.
Webb, 33, announced his retirement Monday in a statement released by agents Jonathan Maurer and Mike Montana.
"With retirement, Brandon looks forward to focusing on more time with his family,'' the statement said. "He would like to thank all the countless coaches, players and friends for their support during his career.''
Webb won the 2006 National League Cy Young Award but hasn't pitched in the major leagues since 2009 due to shoulder problems. He had been pursuing another comeback attempt before announcing his retirement.
Webb was named an All-Star three times over his career, which saw him average 227 innings a season with the Diamondbacks from 2004 through 2008.
The season he won the NL Cy Young Award he finished with a 16-8 record and a 3.10 ERA. Over the following two seasons, Webb posted a combined 40-17 record and finished second in the Cy Young balloting.
He came up with Arizona in 2003 and had a 2.84 ERA in 180 innings. He pitched more than 200 innings each of the next five seasons, using his heavy sinker to win a Cy Young and earn three All-Star selections.
He threw four innings with the Diamondbacks in 2009. In 2011, he signed with the Texas Rangers, but never pitched in a regular-season game.
''He has worked so hard over the past three years to come back but his shoulder just wouldn't allow it to happen,'' Montana said in an email. ''He's a first class guy with a great family that he'll get to spend more time with now.''
