Source: Dodgers, Abreu close to deal
The sides were still working out the details of Abreu's contract as of Wednesday night, and the source stressed that the deal is not yet done.
The Dodgers' activity with Abreu intensified on the same day that an ownership group including NBA legend Magic Johnson assumed control of the team. It's not clear if those events were related.
The Angels released Abreu last week, after he batted .208 with no home runs and five RBI in eight games. The Angels must pay all of his $9 million salary this year, less the major-league minimum, so Abreu is a low-cost option for the Dodgers.
Abreu, 38, would be a left-handed option in left field for the Dodgers, as well as a pinch hitter.
The Dodgers have been using a combination of Jerry Hairston Jr. and Tony Gwynn Jr. in left field. Juan Rivera, who began the year as the primary left fielder, has been limited recently by a hamstring injury.
