In their latest move, the Mariners have traded right-hander Brandon Morrow to the Blue Jays in exchange for right-hander Brandon League and minor-league outfielder Johermyn Chavez.
The Jays, who recently traded ace right-hander Roy Halladay to the Phillies, could use Morrow as a starter or as a closer. From the Mariners’ perspective, the prospect — likely a pitcher — could be the key to the deal.
Morrow, 25, was the Mariners’ first-round pick and fifth overall selection in the 2006 draft. The M’s have used him as both a starter and reliever and bounced him back and forth between the majors and minors.
In three major-league seasons, Morrow has yet to throw 70 innings. However, his ERA in 197 2/3 career innings is 3.96, and he has averaged more than a strikeout per inning.
League, 26, appeared in 67 games for the Jays last season, posting a 4.58 ERA.
