Sources: D-Backs trying to keep DiPoto

At the beginning of this week, Kevin Towers and Jerry DiPoto were the finalists for the Arizona Diamondbacks general manager position.
Towers got the job. And now DiPoto could be a key part of Towers’ front office.
Multiple sources told FOXSports.com on Friday that the Diamondbacks are in active discussions with DiPoto — who had been the interim GM before Towers’ hiring — about remaining with the organization in a high-level position.
One source with close knowledge of the talks believes there is an 80 percent chance that DiPoto will remain with the club.
Diamondbacks club president Derrick Hall didn’t offer a prediction on whether DiPoto will accept the team’s offer, but he said late Friday, “I am hopeful he will stay, because I believe he belongs here and we all want him here.”
Immediately after the Diamondbacks named Towers as their GM, it seemed certain that DiPoto would depart. That has changed.
Hall is said to have great affinity for DiPoto, an executive with the team since 2006. DiPoto’s moves as interim GM were met with positive reviews in the industry, and his familiarity with the organization’s personnel could be valuable to Towers during the transition period.
DiPoto is viewed by many within the industry as a future GM. He resides in Arizona and may not want to change organizations now if he (a) likes Towers’ plan and (b) believes there is a reasonable chance he will become a GM elsewhere within the next couple years, anyway.

“Two extremely different people who value players completely differently,” the person said of Towers and DiPoto.
