News: Collmenter threw seven innings of one-run ball in Wednesday's 4-3, 10-inning win over Miami.
Impact: Collmenter has posted a 2.16 ERA over his last five home starts. He owns a shaky 4.70 ERA on the road, though.
Thu. July 10, 2014 | STATS
News: Goldschmidt hit a walkoff two-run double in Wednesday's 4-3, 10-inning win over Miami.
Impact: Goldschmidt has hit safely in all nine games this month, going 15 for 32 with nine extra-base hits and eight RBIs.
Thu. July 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Reynolds (elbow) is on track to return in August, the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: He's on a similar timetable as Dan Hudson, although neither pitcher has been able to appear in rehab games to this point. It would hardly be surprising to see Reynolds' timetable get pushed back if he doesn't begin to appear in minor league games soon.
Thu. July 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Hudson (elbow) is on track to return in August, the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: Considering that he's working his way back from his second Tommy John surgery, it would hardly be surprising to see that timetable pushed back if Hudson doesn't begin to appear in minor league games in the near future.
Thu. July 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Reed's velocity has dropped in each of his last three outings, culminating with his most recent blown save, when he was averaging just 91.7 mph on his fastball.
Impact: Typically, Reed's heater averages more than 93 mph, but he was sitting at 90-91 in Tuesday's appearance against the Marlins. Despite Reed's presumed availability Wednesday, Brad Ziegler pitched two innings out of the bullpen for the D-Backs in a late-inning situation that otherwise could have gone to Reed. Even with manager Kirk Gibson's instance that Reed is the team's closer, this is a situation worth monitoring.
Thu. July 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Trumbo (foot) hit his third home run in as many games during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.
Impact: Trumbo has been scorching at the plate in his three games at Reno, going 5-for-11 with a walk, three homers and six RBI. The Diamondbacks previously indicated that Trumbo most likely wouldn't return until after the All-Star break, but given his stellar showing and the team's immediate need for impact bats in the outfield, don't be surprised if he makes a cameo over the weekend.
Wed. July 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Collmenter struck out six and walked one while giving up one run on seven hits over seven innings against the Marlins on Wednesday.
Impact: He did not factor in the decision, but Collmenter rebounded nicely from a poor showing against Atlanta on the Fourth of July. The six strikeouts matched a season high set April 20 against the Dodgers, and Collmenter has been a pleasant surprise for the D-Backs this season with a 3.80 ERA, working mostly from the team's injury-decimated rotation.
Wed. July 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Ziegler picked up a win in relief Wednesday after tossing a pair of innings and giving up two runs on two hits while striking out four against the Marlins.
Impact: Entering a tie-game in the ninth inning, Ziegler came back to work the 10th. Addison Reed was presumably available, which raises some questions regarding the bullpen plans of manager Kirk Gibson despite his recent assertion that the job still belongs to Reed. Subsequently, Ziegler is a nice speculative add in places where he's currently available.
Wed. July 9, 2014 | STATS
News: Nuno impressed in his Diamondbacks debut, firing seven scoreless innings while yielding just three hits and striking out a season-high seven, though he didn't receive a decision in a 2-1 loss to Miami on Tuesday.
Impact: Arizona could be getting a steal in Nuno if he keeps it up considering he had posted a 6.75 ERA over his previous four outings.
Wed. July 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Manager Kirk Gibson backed Reed as his closer Wednesday, after the reliever blew his fifth save of the season a day earlier, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: Reed hasn't been a complete disaster this season, with a respectable 42:9 K:BB ratio, but his propensity for giving up the long ball has dinged his luster significantly. The game-winning home run surrendered to the Marlins' Marcell Ozuna on Tuesday was the ninth Reed has given up this season, in a mere 36.2 innings. Brad Ziegler, a groundball specialist who has allowed only 16 homers over the entirety of his seven-year career, should warrant a preemptive pickup in NL-only or deeper leagues in the event Gibson grows more frustrated with Reed's flyball tendencies.
Wed. July 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Pollock (hand) is targeting August 1 to begin his rehab assignment, the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: Pollock was originally projected to come off the DL on August 15, so targeting August 1 to start a rehab assignment is right on pace with the Diamondbacks' plan to re-integrate their starting center fielder. Before going to the DL, he was hitting phenomenally for the team, going .316/.366/.554 with six homers and 15 RBI. The D-Backs know their chances for making the playoffs are all but done this year, but getting Pollock back into the lineup gives them some stability near the top and can pave the way for some RBI chances for Mark Trumbo and MVP candidate Paul Goldschmidt. It's difficult to say what value Pollock will have for the rest of the season, but if he picks up right where he left off, grabbing him off the free agent list when he gets close to returning could bolster any fantasy lineup for a playoff push.
Wed. July 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Hill is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Marlins.
Impact: A day out of the lineup Wednesday failed to invigorate Hill at the plate, as the second baseman collected only one hit in 16 at-bats after starting each of the last four games. He'll give way to Didi Gregorius at second base Wednesday.
Wed. July 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Nuno made a great first impression with his new team on Tuesday, striking out seven over seven scoreless innings.
Impact: This was easily Nuno's best outing of the season, and it happens to be in his first start with his new club. He allowed just four total base runners (three hits and one walk) and the seven punch outs marked a new career-high for the finesse lefty. Nuno was in line to get the win, but Addison Reed coughed up the lead in the ninth. The 26-year-old lefty finishes his first half with a 2-5 record and a 4.98 ERA through 85 innings pitched.
Tue. July 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Reed gave up a two-run homer to Marcell Ozuna to blow the save and get the loss against the Marlins on Tuesday. The blown save was his fifth of the season, and the homer was his ninth allowed this year.
Impact: On one hand, Reed has improved his walk rate (though he walked the leadoff hitter in the ninth inning on Tuesday) and has a great K:BB ratio. On the other hand, that home run rate is tremendously high, and Tuesday's homer wasn't a fluke - it was a shot to straightaway center field that nearly took out the camera out there. Reed received a vote of confidence after his last blown save, but you might want to stash Brad Ziegler to back him up just in case.
Tue. July 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said he's giving Montero off Tuesday because "He's starting to get tired. I can tell," Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Impact: The decision to leave Montero on the bench for a second time in three days raised some eyebrows, but apparently there is no injury in play. Montero is coming off a June in which he posted a .842 OPS, and he's off to a respectable 6-for-22 start to July, but Gibson seems focused on keeping him at close to full strength for the long haul.
Tue. July 8, 2014 | STATS
News: Peralta was 2 for 4 with a double and a triple and three RBIs in Monday's 9-1 win over Miami.
Impact: Peralta continues to enjoy quite the start to his major league career, batting .467 with eight RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak.
Tue. July 8, 2014 | STATS
News: Goldschmidt was 2 for 3 with his major league-leading 33rd double of the season and his 59th RBI in Monday's 9-1 win over the Marlins.
Impact: Goldschmidt is batting a scorching .520 (13 for 25) with seven extra-base hits and six RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak.
Tue. July 8, 2014 | STATS
News: Anderson ended a four-game losing streak with a solid effort Monday against Miami.
Impact: Anderson gave up just one run over six innings and matched a season high with eight strikeouts in the 9-1 victory. He had posted a 5.03 ERA while losing each of his previous four outings.
Tue. July 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gregorius is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Marlins.
Impact: Nick Ahmed will start at short for the second time in three days, with Gregorius once again sitting against a left-hander (Brad Hand). Since his July 29 callup, Ahmed is just 1-for-11, but it looks like Gregorius will continue to lose occasional starts to him while Chris Owings (shoulder) remains out.
Tue. July 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Montero is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Marlins.
Impact: Montero was just afforded a day of rest Sunday, but he'll sit Tuesday as Tuffy Gosewisch once again spells him behind the plate. There's been no word of an injury to the 30-year-old, but this marks the first time all season he's sat twice in a three-day stretch, so something seems slightly amiss. That said, consider it a day off until there's indication otherwise.
Mon. July 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Goldschmidt went 2-for-3 with a walk while knocking in a run and scoring two Monday against the Marlins.
Impact: Goldschmidt is off to a scorching hot to start July, going 13-for-25 (.520) in seven games. The All-Star first baseman improved his gaudy season line to .313/.402/.558 with 59 RBI, 66 runs, 16 home runs and eight stolen bases with Monday's performance.
Mon. July 7, 2014 | STATS
News: Miley earned his fourth win Sunday.
Impact: Miley allowed one run on five hits and one walk in 6 2-3 innings. He struck out eight. The left-hander was 0-3 in his previous nine starts and had not won since beating the White Sox on May 10. The win snapped his streak of five straight no-decisions.
Mon. July 7, 2014 | STATS
News: Goldschmidt drilled a two-run homer Sunday.
Impact: Goldschmidt is sizzling with 11 hits in his last 22 ABs.
Mon. July 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Owings (shoulder) has not yet been cleared to start hitting, MLB.com's Steve Gilbert reports.
Impact: Manager Kirk Gibson said the shortstop is still experiencing some lingering pain in his shoulder, preventing him from resuming baseball activities. Because of the delay in his recovery, Owings no longer looks like a safe bet to return immediately after the All-Star break.
Mon. July 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Nuno will make his Arizona debut Tuesday against the Marlins, the D-Backs' official site reports.
Impact: Rather than have Nuno start Monday's game on regular rest -- his first day with his new club -- manager Kirk Gibson wanted to give the left-hander a day to acclimate. Nuno has a 6.9 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 over 17 appearances (14 starts) with the Yankees this season, but his xFIP sits more than a run lower (4.40) than his ERA 5.42.
Mon. July 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Arroyo (elbow) will require Tommy John surgery, ending his 2014 season, MLB.com's Steve Gilbert reports.
Impact: The development seemingly comes out of nowhere, as Arroyo had resumed playing catch when an initial MRI revealed only a sprain of the UCL, but a re-evaluation of the elbow evidently showed something more severe. Considering that Arroyo isn't a hard thrower and had never been on the disabled list in his career prior to suffering the elbow injury in June, an ailment of this extent is an extreme surprise. The 12-to-18 month recovery timetable typically associated with Tommy John surgery will likely also wipe out most of his 2015 campaign, when Arroyo will enter the second year of his two-year, $23.5 million contract with the Diamondbacks.
July 6, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Reed notched his 20th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning in Sunday's 3-1 victory over the Braves.
Impact: In his first appearance since Tuesday's blown save versus the Pirates, Reed breezed through the Braves in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday afternoon. Though he did allow a leadoff single, the 25-year-old closer followed that up with a strikeout and a double play. Reed ultimately needed just 10 pitches to close things out and is now 20-for-24 in his save chances this season.
July 6, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Miley tossed a very strong 6.2 innings Sunday afternoon, giving up just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out eight in a 3-1 win over the Braves.
Impact: With this effort, Miley made it back-to-back dominant performances to kick off July. Over 14.2 innings during his last two outings, the Diamondbacks' lefty has surrendered just three earned runs on nine hits while posting an outstanding 18:1 K:BB ratio. Miley will be back atop the mound next weekend in San Francisco.
Sun. July 6, 2014 | STATS
News: Montero went 3 for 4 on Saturday.
Impact: Montero is a .300 hitter against RHPs but just .157 against southpaws so keep him away from lefties.
Sun. July 6, 2014 | STATS
News: Bolsinger was blasted in Saturday's 10-4 loss to the Braves.
Impact: Bolsinger gave up 10 hits, seven runs - five earned - and walked two in 3 2-3 innings. He struck out five. He had a 2.70 ERA in his previous three starts but it was hard to believe that after this pathetic effort.
Sun. July 6, 2014 | STATS
News: The Diamondbacks acquired left-hander Vidal Nuno from the Yankees. Arizona dealt away Brandon McCarthy, who turns 31 on Monday and was 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA with Arizona this season.
Impact: Nuno, 26, was 2-5 with a 5.42 ERA in 17 games, including 14 starts, with the Yankees. Nuno was hurt by allowing 15 homers - including 13 at home - in 78 innings this season. Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said Nuno will make his debut with Arizona on Tuesday against Miami. He is an awful pitcher.
July 6, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Inciarte went 1-for-4 with a solo homer -- the first of his big league career -- in the D-Backs' loss to the Braves on Saturday.
Impact: Although he continues to see chances in the leadoff spot, Inciarte is hitting just .236/.262/.279 through 47 games with the D-Backs. Once A.J. Pollock is able to return during the second half of the season, Inciarte's playing time figures to fall considerably.
July 6, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Parra is out of the lineup Sunday against the Braves, Nick Piecoro of AZ Central Sports reports.
Impact: Parra had started three of the past for games for the Diamondbacks, but will get his third day off of the week Sunday. He dealt with a minor hand injury earlier in the week, so this could just be the team being overly cautious. It's also possible that manager Kirk Gibson simply wanted to get another right-handed bat in his lineup against southpaw Alex Wood.
July 6, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Nuno was traded to the Diamondbacks on Sunday in exchange for Brandon McCarthy, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.
Impact: Nuno has held on to a rotation spot with the Yankees for most of the season due to a lack of better alternatives, compiling an uninspiring 5.42 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 60 strikeouts over 78 innings. While he's not likely to fare much better with the move to the National League, Nuno gives the Diamondbacks a relatively young arm with some upside, as the team looks to creep back into playoff contention in the years to come. He'll likely be inserted into the Arizona rotation right away as a direct replacement for McCarthy.
July 6, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gregorius is out of the lineup Sunday against the Braves, Nick Piecoro of AZ Central Sports reports.
Impact: Gregorius has made four straight starts for the Diamondbacks, but will sit Sunday in favor of Nick Ahmed. With lefty Alex Wood on the hill for the Braves, manager Kirk Gibson likely wanted to get an extra right-handed bat in his lineup.
July 6, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Montero is out of the lineup Sunday against the Braves, Nick Piecoro of AZ Central Sports reports.
Impact: Montero has caught 13 straight games for the Diamondbacks, but will get a day off in favor of Tuffy Gosewisch on Sunday. Despite Saturday's three-hit performance, the timing seemed right for Montero to get a day of rest.
Sat. July 5, 2014 | STATS
News: Collmenter's three-start win streak ended in a 5-2 loss to the Braves on Friday night.
Impact: Collmenter allowed five runs, 11 hits, one walk, and struck out three in six-plus innings. His next start is against Miami at home.
Sat. July 5, 2014 | STATS
News: Peralta is a player on the rise for Arizona.
Impact: Peralta had two hits Friday and the rookie is hitting .330 in 29 games. He could be the real deal.
Sat. July 5, 2014 | STATS
News: Arizona recalled De La Rosa from Triple-A Reno on Saturday.
Impact: De La Rosa owns a 2.52 ERA in 36 relief appearances for Reno.
Sat. July 5, 2014 | RotoWire
News: The Diamondbacks recalled De La Rosa from Triple-A Reno on Saturday.
Impact: Arizona traded reliever Joe Thatcher to the Angels on Saturday morning, and thus, the team had an open roster spot and a need for a lefty out of the bullpen. De La Rosa will fill that need, after posting a 2.52 ERA, 8.2 K/9, and 4.6 BB/9 in 36 appearances with Reno to begin the season.
Fri. July 4, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Collmenter tossed six innings, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits and one walk while striking out three in Friday's loss to the Braves.
Impact: Heading into this outing, Collmenter had given up just two earned runs over his previous 11.1 innings. Friday night's effort was a different story, however, as the Braves' offense got to the big right-hander for a pair of runs in each of the first two frames. Though Collmenter did settle in after the second inning, the outcome of the contest was ultimately decided. The Diamondbacks will send Collmenter back to the bump Wednesday versus the Marlins, carrying a 3.98 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 5.5 K/9 for the campaign.
Fri. July 4, 2014 | STATS
News: Goldschmidt put forth his third straight multihit performance, going 2 for 4 with his 30th double and first triple this season in Thursday's 10-2 win at Pittsburgh.
Impact: Goldschmidt is 7 for 11 over his last three games after going 1 for 19 in his previous seven, though he also walked 14 times in that span.
Fri. July 4, 2014 | STATS
News: Peralta recorded his second three-hit game and hit his third homer of the season in Thursday's 10-2 win at Pittsburgh.
Impact: The rookie continues to enjoy a fine start to his career and is 11 for 28 over his last eight games with seven RBIs.
Fri. July 4, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Arroyo (elbow) played catch Friday and felt good, Nick Piecoro of AZCentral.com reports.
Impact: Friday's session represents a positive step forward for Arroyo, after he was shut down for more than two weeks with the elbow issue, but there is no timetable for him to return to a mound. Manager Kirk Gibson said the team probably won't have a great idea of where Arroyo stands until he starts to dial it up.
Fri. July 4, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Hill is not in the lineup Friday, the Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro reports.
Impact: Hill will get to celebrate his Independence Day with a day off Friday, with Didi Gregorius getting the start at second base. Despite only slashing .248/.285/.368 this season, Hill has been a staple in the D-Backs' lineup and should be back out there Saturday.
Fri. July 4, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cahill tossed six scoreless innings Wednesday in his most recent start at Triple-A Reno. He's now sitting with a 20:9 K:BB over 19 innings (four starts) at the level.
Impact: Control has still been a problem at times for Cahill, who has issued nine walks in those 19 innings. The outing Wednesday was easily his best of the season, and a big step back in the right direction as he attempts to regain a rotation spot -- and place on the 40-man roster -- with the D-Backs in the coming weeks.
Thu. July 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: D-Backs manager Kirk Gibson gave Reed a vote of confidence following his fourth blown save of the season in Tuesday's game, the Arizona Republic reports. "I think he's been pretty good," Gibson said of Reed. "He's done a pretty good job for us. We've had no discussions about removing him. You might feel differently, but we don't."
Impact: Only Joe Nathan and Sergio Romo have a lower success rate than Reed (23-for-27, 82.6 percent) among closers this season. While Gibson's confidence bodes well for those relying on Reed for saves, it's a situation worth monitoring nonetheless.
Thu. July 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Prado is not in the lineup Thursday against the Pirates, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Prado's absence from the lineup would appear to be a planned day off, as he's started each of the past 11 games for the Diamondbacks. The 30-year-old has been a disappointment on the whole this season, as he's currently on pace for his worst showing in home runs, runs, and RBI since 2009, his first full campaign in the majors.
Thu. July 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Parra is out of the lineup Thursday against the Pirates, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Parra was felled by a minor hand injury earlier in the series before returning to action Wednesday, so it's understandable that manager Kirk Gibson wanted to give him the night off. With the rest Thursday, Parra figures to be a fixture in the lineup during the team's weekend series with the Phillies.
Thu. July 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Trumbo (foot) will head to Triple-A Reno on Sunday to take the next step in his rehab assignment with the goal of being ready to return to the D-Backs after the All-Star break on July 17, the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: After appearing in a pair of Arizona Rookie League games this week (Trumbo is 3-for-6 with a home run thus far), he'll continue making appearances in that setting through Saturday. In addition to playing on consecutive days, Trumbo played defense for six innings Wednesday, marking the first time he's been in the field since suffering his injury in late April.
Thu. July 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Ziegler tossed a scoreless eighth inning Thursday to record his 22nd hold of the season.
Impact: It appears as though manager Kirk Gibson is reluctant to pull the plug on closer Addison Reed, despite his struggles. Even so, it might be prudent to roster Ziegler if you are speculating for saves, as he's been the best pitcher in Arizona's bullpen this season.
Thu. July 3, 2014 | STATS
News: Goldschmidt was 3 for 4 with a double in Wednesday's loss to Pittsburgh.
Impact: Goldschmidt's 29 doubles tied him with Jonathan Lucroy for the NL lead entering Thursday.
Thu. July 3, 2014 | STATS
News: Nuno fell to the Rays on Wednesday.
Impact: Nuno gave up four runs in five-plus innings. He's an awful pitcher and expect another loss next week against the Tribe.
Wed. July 2, 2014 | STATS
News: Miley was terrific but went without a decision in Tuesday's 3-2 walkoff loss at Pittsburgh.
Impact: Miley carried a shutout into the ninth inning before Starling Marte smashed a two-run double off closer Addison Reed to tie the game. The left-hander struck out 10 and allowed just four hits.
Wed. July 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Nuno gave up four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits over five innings in a loss to the Rays on Wednesday.
Impact: Sitting with a 5.42 ERA on the season, Nuno is doing very little to secure his place in the Yankees' rotation. CC Sabathia is currently making his way through a rehab assignment, but it's unclear if Nuno will be replaced before Sabathia is ready to return. If he remains in the mix through the All-Star break, Nuno will have turns in Cleveland on Monday and in Baltimore on July 12 before the second half gets underway.
Tue. July 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Ross (hip) is back in the starting lineup Tuesday.
Impact: After getting hit by a pitch Saturday, Ross did not appear in Sunday's game against San Diego. He appears to be OK after the D-Backs' day off Monday, however.
Tue. July 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Reed was charged with the loss and his fourth blown save of the season Tuesday after giving up a run on two hits and a walk in the bottom of the ninth inning in Pittsburgh.
Impact: He only recorded one out before the Pirates walked off in the ninth inning. Reed has given up a run in five of his last 10 outings, and while the closer role is still his in Arizona, he's one of the weaker fantasy options at the position based on his ineffectiveness.
Tue. July 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Miley gave up two runs on four hits and had 10 strikeouts over eight innings Tuesday against the Pirates.
Impact: It's been almost two months since Miley has recorded a win, but he certainly pitched well enough to get a win Tuesday, posting a 10:0 K:BB ratio. His 21.4 percent K-rate and 7.6 percent walk rate show that this outing was a bit of an outlier. On the other hand, his 3.48 xFIP heading into play Tuesday points to his 4.61 ERA being a bit misleading. He's might be worth a spot start in deeper leagues Sunday when he faces the free-swinging Braves in Atlanta.
Tue. July 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Owings has been diagnosed with a bruised left shoulder, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Impact: The prognosis is good for Owings, as it appears he won't miss much more than the minimum 15 days required by his DL stint. An MRI on Monday cleared the 22-year-old of any structural damage, so it seems likely he'll get the green light to resume baseball activities by the end of the week.
Tue. July 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Trumbo (foot) is approximately 10-14 days away from rejoining the Diamondbacks, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Impact: Now more than two months removed from suffering a stress fracture in his left foot, Trumbo served as the designated hitter for the organization's Arizona League team Tuesday and could move to Triple-A Reno next week. It would seem he has a chance to be ready shortly after the All-Star break.
Tue. July 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Arroyo (elbow) is expected to resume throwing soon, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Impact: Arroyo was forced onto the DL for the first time in his career in mid-June due to a strained UCL, and while he remains shut down, it sounds like the right-hander is close to resuming his throwing program. He'll face a lengthy process of rebuilding strength once he does get the green light, so a late-July/early-August return seems like a best-case scenario.
June 29, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cedeno was dealt to the Diamondbacks on Sunday in exchange for minor league catcher Raywilly Gomez, Austin Laymance of MLB.com reports.
Impact: Outrighted by the Phillies following the first game of Saturday's doubleheader with the Braves, Cedeno will move to a new organization entirely rather than heading back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Cedeno will bolster the Diamondbacks' infield depth at Triple-A Reno after an injury to Chris Owings prompted the team to promote Nick Ahmed to the big leagues.
Sun. June 29, 2014 | STATS
News: After Chris Owings was placed on the disabled list, the Arizona Diamondbacks selected the contract of infielder Nick Ahmed from Triple-A Reno on Sunday.
Impact: Ahmed will be making his first appearance in the majors after hitting .324 with two homers and 36 RBIs in 79 games with Reno. He was acquired with infielder Martin Prado in a 2013 trade that sent outfielder Justin Upton to Atlanta.
Sun. June 29, 2014 | STATS
News: Collmenter earned his third win in as many appearances in Saturday's 3-1 victory in San Diego.
Impact: Collmenter (7-4, 3.74 ERA) pitched 5 1-3 innings, giving up one run and five hits as Arizona won consecutive games for the first time since June 7-8 against Atlanta. The right-hander earned a victory in relief in a 14-inning win over Cleveland on June 24 and has a 1.59 ERA in his last three appearances.
June 29, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Owings (shoulder) will receive an MRI on Monday, Jack Magruder of FOX Sports Arizona reports.
Impact: The MRI is just a standard procedure to determine if Owings suffered anything more severe than a left shoulder strain, which is how his injury is currently being characterized. Owings was placed on the disabled list Sunday after missing four of the previous six games due to the ailment.
June 29, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gregorius is out of the lineup Sunday vs. the Padres, but could be set to assume full-time duties at shortstop following Chris Owings' (shoulder) placement on the disabled list.
Impact: The Diamondbacks recalled Nick Ahmed to bolster their infield in the wake of Owings' move to the DL, and although Ahmed will start Sunday, he doesn't seem to be a serious roadblock to Gregorius' path to playing time. Gregorius is batting a mere .211 over 57 at-bats with Arizona, but his world-class defense may be enough to keep him on the field most nights.
June 29, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Chavez (knee) was transferred to the 60-day DL on Sunday.
Impact: A knee sprain sent Chavez to the 15-day DL back on June 9, and while he will not need surgery, the move to the 60-day DL ensures that he will not be back until at least the middle of August. Middle infielder Nick Ahmed was called up to take Chavez's spot on the roster.
June 29, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Owings was placed on the 15-day DL on Sunday with a left shoulder strain.
Impact: The DL stint will be backdated to June 26, meaning Owings will be eligible to return July 11, but it's uncertain whether he'll be ready by that time. Owings suffered the injury on a slide into home plate last week, and while he's on the mend, Didi Gregorius will take on a full-time role at short.

News: Arroyo (elbow) is nearing the point where he can resume baseball activities, the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: Thus far, he's been in a period of rest, so a return after the All-Star break is still the goal for Arroyo.

News: Montero went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Padres.
Impact: Montero's blast in the top of the sixth inning ended up being the difference in a low-scoring contest for the D-Backs on Saturday night. It is certainly safe to say that the 30-year-old backstop has moved beyond his miserable 2013 campaign and has regained the form that earned him an All-Star selection back in 2011.

News: Collmenter worked a solid 5.1 innings Saturday night versus the Padres, giving up just one run on five hits and two walks while striking out four en route to his seventh victory of the season.
Impact: After struggling in the early weeks of June, Collmenter is on a nice little stretch for the Diamondbacks. Over his last three outings (two starts and one relief appearance), the 28-year-old hurler has allowed just two runs across 11.1 innings and picked up three victories. Collmenter has been one of the few fairly steady arms on the Arizona staff in 2014 and is slated to be back atop the mound in Atlanta next Friday.

News: The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed infielder Chris Owings on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain.
Impact: Owings is batting .277 with six homers and 21 RBIs in 72 games, including 61 at shortstop.

News: Ross exited Saturday's game against the Padres after getting beaned with a pitch in the left hip, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Impact: Ross was 0-for-2 before departing and hasn't factored into the D-Backs' offense much this season with one homer, eight runs, and eight RBI through 141 at-bats. It's unclear at this point as to whether or not he might be forced to sit out due to injury, but even if he does, Arizona isn't likely to miss his anemic production.

News: Owings (shoulder) won't play Saturday against San Diego, Jack Magruder of FOX Sports Arizona reports.
Impact: In addition, Owings is likely to sit out again Sunday and check in with the doctor Monday in Phoenix. This news comes on the heels of a report Friday that indicated he was expected to return Saturday, so it's obvious he's experienced a setback with the sore left shoulder. Keep an eye on him the next few days and be sure to act accordingly if he ends up requiring a DL stint.

News: Nuno rebounded from two awful starts to pitch two-hit ball into the sixth inning, and the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 6-0 on Friday night in the opener of a series between struggling powers.
Impact: New York manager Joe Girardi could have skipped the struggling Nuno (2-4) and given the ball to rookie ace Masahiro Tanaka because of the extra day of rest. Nuno rewarded Girardi with 5 2-3 impressive innings after he gave up a total of 13 runs in 9 1-3 innings in losses to Oakland and Baltimore. He yielded a leadoff single to Jonny Gomes in the second and a one-out double in the third to Brock Holt. Nuno then retired 10 straight before walking his last batter.

News: Putz, who was designated for assignment last week, was released Saturday by the Diamondbacks, MLB.com reports.
Impact: Putz didn't want to go to Triple-A, so he now becomes a free agent. He battled a forearm injury this season, posting a 6.59 ERA in 13.2 innings.
Sat. June 28, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cedeno was outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Braves, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Impact: The Phillies needed to make room for pitcher Sean O'Sullivan, who is slated to start Game 2 on Saturday night. Cedeno went 0-for-2 in the first game Saturday, bringing him to 0-for-9 in eight games with the Phillies. He also loses his spot on the 40-man roster. He can reject the assignment to Triple-A and become a free agent.

News: Reed picked up his 18th save of the year as he pitched a perfect ninth inning while striking out two hitters.
Impact: It continues to be an up-and-down season for Reed, who lowered his ERA to 4.05 on the year while bouncing back from a blown save in his previous appearance. Even with the limited save opportunities the Diamondbacks have given him, he has locked up 18 of the 21 chances so far.

News: Prado was dropped to the seventh spot in the order Friday night where he went 0-for-4 and lowered his season line to .267/.316/.365.
Impact: Friday marked only the second time all season that Prado was placed in the seventh spot, but his struggling bat has been a problem for three months now, and the D-Backs are looking at younger players in more prominent spots with the likes of Ender Inciarte and David Peralta ahead of Prado at times in recent weeks. With a pro-rated $11 million remaining on his contract in 2014 and $22 million left through 2016, the D-Backs are in a difficult spot with Prado, as he's looking increasingly like a utility player miscast as an everyday option this season.
Sat. June 28, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez has a 29:12 K:BB over 34 appearances (30.2 innings) for the D-Backs this season.
Impact: Perez will likely be a target for teams seeking a left-handed arm in the bullpen between now and the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. Much like teammate Joe Thatcher, a new team won't lead to a significant role change, as Perez is typically tasked with handling lefties.

News: Owings (shoulder), who was scratched Friday, is expected to return to the lineup Saturday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Impact: The injury is the same one that slowed Owings last week. He was scratched Friday in favor of Didi Gregorius.

News: The Arizona Diamondbacks promoted infielder/outfielder Nick Evans from Reno on Friday, and optioned right-hander Zeke Spruill to the Triple-A club.
Impact: The 28-year-old Evans hit .354 with 18 doubles, 11 home runs and 47 RBIs in 51 games for the Aces this season. He also appeared in eight games with the Diamondbacks, going 1 for 11 with a homer and an RBI.
Fri. June 27, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Nuno blanked the Red Sox over 5.2 innings, allowing two hits and walking two while striking out five in the Yankees' 6-0 win Friday night.
Impact: Now 2-4 with a 5.42 ERA, Nuno likely needed this strong performance. There had been speculation that his rotation spot was in jeopardy, but this should solidify his position for the time being. He is scheduled to face Tampa Bay at home next time out.
Fri. June 27, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Owings was scratched from Friday's game with a sore left shoulder and is considered day-to-day.
Impact: He has been battling shoulder and ankle injuries lately, and this sounds like more of the same. Didi Gregorius naturally filled in for Owings at shortstop, and will continue to do so if he misses any more time.
Fri. June 27, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Owings has been scratched from Friday's lineup.
Impact: A reason for his scratch has not been provided by the team, but Owings has been battling shoulder and ankle injuries of late and it would seem one of those issues is to blame. Owings will be replaced at short by Didi Gregorius.
Fri. June 27, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Inciarte has been used in the leadoff role in each of the D-Backs' last three games, going 7-for-14 with a pair of walks during that span.
Impact: With A.J. Pollock on the shelf, the D-Backs are looking for answers atop the batting order and in center field. Throughout his time in the minor leagues, Inciarte showed a steady ability to make contact, compiling a .284/.344/.370 line over 2,542 plate appearances over seven seasons in the Arizona system. At least until he cools off, he'll get a chance to stay in the top spot on manager Kirk Gibson's lineup card.

News: Miley will attempt to focus on his approach to hitters the first time through the lineup and look for ways to get more shut-down innings prior to his next start Tuesday against the Pirates, the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: Skills wise, Miley has increased his strikeout rate to career-high 8.2 K/9 (21.4% K%) while his walk rate at a nearly identical mark to his 2013 numbers (2.9 BB/9, 7.6% BB%). The big difference has been an increase in home runs (career-high 1.5 HR/9), fueled by a 17.5% HR/FB mark. With a career-high 9.5% swinging-strike rate, Miley needs to avoid making mistakes up in the strike zone, but he may be able to turn things around from the 4.78 ERA he's carried through 17 starts over the course of the second half.
Fri. June 27, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Evans has been called up from Triple-A Reno by the D-Backs on Friday.
Impact: Evans has been mashing at Reno, slashing .354/.423/.631 in 51 games, and he hit a home run in his only hit in 11 plate appearances during his brief run with the D-Backs earlier this year. He'll serve as a utility infielder and outfielder for Arizona for the time being.

News: The Diamondbacks optioned Spruill to Triple-A Reno following Wednesday's game.
Impact: Spruill would have been unavailable for a few days after throwing four innings in relief in Wednesday's loss to the Indians, so the Diamondbacks decided to send him down to open up a roster spot for a fresh arm. Arizona will announce who will take that spot sometime Friday.
Wed. June 25, 2014 | STATS
News: The Arizona Diamondbacks placed infielder/catcher Jordan Pacheco on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of right shoulder tendinitis and recalled Spruill from Triple-A Reno.
Impact: The 24-year-old Spruill appeared in one game for Arizona this season, pitching 5 1-3 innings to take the loss against the New York Mets on May 25 in the second game of a doubleheader. He's 3-4 with one save and a 6.75 ERA in 17 games this season for Reno.
Wed. June 25, 2014 | STATS
News: Pacheco was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of right shoulder tendinitis and recalled right-hander Zeke Spruill from Triple-A Reno.
Impact: The 28-year-old Pacheco has appeared in eight games for Arizona since being claimed off waivers from Colorado on June 12. He's hitting .375, going 3 for 8 with a double in eight pinch-hit appearances for the Diamondbacks after hitting .236 in with eight RBIs in 72 at-bats in 22 games for Colorado.

News: Bolsinger was a tough-luck loser Sunday.
Impact: Bolsinger allowed a run and five hits in 7 2-3 innings as he was outpitched by Giants stud Madison Bumgarner.
Sun. June 22, 2014 | STATS
News: Nuno fell to 1-4 on Saturday. The left-hander yielded five runs - four earned - and six hits in 6 1-3 innings. He allowed three home runs and has served up 13 in 39 1-3 innings this season at home, where he is 0-3 with a 7.09 ERA.
Impact: Nuno is having a hard time with the homer-friendly dimensions at Yankee Stadium. He was rocked in his previous outing in Oakland and is 0-4 since beating the Los Angeles Angels on May 7. "This is what we have. And as I said, it's not like there's just starting pitchers lying around out there," manager Joe Girardi said, explaining that Nuno will stay in the rotation. "Right now, this is what it is."
