Impact: He gave up eight hits while walking two and striking out two. News: The possibility of losing Miguel Montero to free agency and the lack of an alternative that would bring in anyone of comparable ability led the Arizona Diamondbacks to agree to pay the catcher $60 million from 2013-17s.
Impact: Montero signed the contract on Saturday and, with his 20-month-old son Angel on his lap, said at a news conference that he never wanted to leave the organization that he has been a part of since agreeing to a $13,000 deal 11 years ago. General Manager Kevin Towers said that the free agent market will not be a good one after this season and Montero would have been at the top of the list for the 10 or so teams that will be looking for catchers.

News: Albaladejo allowed one run off one hit through 1.1 innings against Triple-A New Orleans on Thursday to notch his eight save of the season. He allowed no walks and struck out no one.
Impact: Albaladejo has been steady all season, posting a 2.38 ERA over 22.2 innings and has a 24:9 K:BB ratio. Although Kirk Gibson reassured that J.J. Putz is still his closer, there is still a chance that the team makes a move, given his 7.20 ERA. If Arizona does, it could be a trip to the DL, which would allow it to bring up Albaladejo to join the relief corps.

News: Montero (groin) will likely return to the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Brewers, the Diamondbacks' official site reports.
Impact: Montero missed the team's last two games, but it appears he'll be back behind the plate Friday. "It feels pretty good right now," Montero said. "I didn't think I had to come out of the game [Monday] because it felt so much better afterward, but I think it was the right move. [The trainers] worked on it right away and I felt a difference immediately." The Diamondbacks haven't made anything official yet, so you may want to wait and be sure that Montero will return before putting him into your fantasy lineup.

News: A person with knowledge of the situation says Montero has agreed to a five-year, $60 million contract.
Impact: Montero avoided arbitration by signing a 1-year, $5.9 million contract for this season. He and the Diamondbacks had announced in spring training that the sides were far apart and were putting the contract issue aside until the season ended. Obviously, that changed in recent weeks. The new deal will put him under contract through the 2017 season.

News: Parra is not in the starting lineup Friday against the Brewers.
Impact: Parra got a spot start Wednesday as Chris Young was given the day off, but he'll be used off the bench Friday. He's hitting .246 in 41 games this season.

Impact: Manager Kirk Gibson said earlier this week that Young probably came off the disabled list a little early, and some thought a return to the DL was possible. It appears that Young is still working his way back to playing shape and needed a day off Wednesday. Feel free to plug him into your lineups.

Impact: Lyle Overbay will get another start at first. Overbay is hitting .370 in 25 games this season, and will continue to cut into Goldy's playing time.

News: Montero and the Diamondbacks agreed to a 5-year, $60 million extension Friday, Jon Morosi of FoxSports.com reports.
Impact: Montero made his first All-Star game last season and finished 2011 with a .282/.351/.469 triple slash along with 18 homers and 86 RBI. His numbers are down this year to .255/.350/.343 with two homers and 21 RBI, but his defense has been nothing short of superb. He threw out 40 percent of potential base stealers in 2011, which led the league. This year, he has improved to an unheard-of 59 percent, once again leading the league.

News: Montero (groin) will not start Friday against the Brewers, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: Montero has missed three consecutive games with a groin injury. Henry Blanco will start in his place.

News: Saunders gave up four earned runs over 6.1 innings, but managed to strike out seven batters and walk away with a win in the D-Backs' victory over the Dodgers on Wednesday night.
Impact: Saunders has been on a rough stretch after a great start to the season. Generally, the knock on Saunders is that his K total is relatively low, but he did mow down seven on Wednesday. Chances are, this isn't a sign of things to come. With his inflated WHIP, he's due for even more regression.

News: Young was held out of the lineup Wednesday after starting five straight games following his stint on the disabled list, the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: "He probably came back (from the disabled list) a tad too early," D-Backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "You go from just working out and not playing to virtually playing every day, it's hard." Gibson also cited the difference between being shape in shape vs. playing shape, so it sounds like the D-Backs may have cut Young's minor-league rehab assignment a bit too short. His status for the start of the series against the Brewers on Friday is unclear, so consider Young day-to-day for now.

News: Montero (groin) missed Wednesday's game, but doesn't expect to be out much longer, the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: "I'd be lying if I said it feels like normal, but it feels pretty good," Montero said. "I was doing things today (Wednesday) that before I got hurt I couldn't do." Henry Blanco and Konrad Schmidt will handle the catching duties as long as Montero is unavailable with the minor ailment. According to the D-Backs' official site, Montero expects to rejoin the lineup Friday against the Brewers.

News: D-Backs manager Kirk Gibson reaffirmed Putz's status as the team's closer Wednesday, the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: Pitch location has been the biggest issue for Putz recently, as he's regained the velocity that was missing from his fastball earlier this season. For now, Putz will continue to take the ball in the ninth inning while David Hernandez and Bryan Shaw will remain in setup roles.

News: Cahill scattered six hits over six innings, allowing one run while striking out six and walking three in Tuesday's 8-7 loss to the Dodgers.
Impact: Cahill has allowed three or more runs in each of his previous three starts.

Impact: In addition to squandering a larger lead earlier in the game, Putz's blown save followed a go-ahead home run from Lyle Overbay in the eighth inning. Putz's fastball topped out just below 94 mph in Wednesday's outing, but he could be losing his grip on the closer's role if his struggles persist.

News: Roberts went 2-for-4 with a run scored while starting at second base for the D-Backs on Tuesday night.
Impact: He's shifting into a utility role for now, with Josh Bell in line to start at third base if he proves capable of hitting big league pitching at a useful clip. Roberts continues to swing the bat with more consistency in May, however, and could wrestle a starting job away from Bell or second baseman Aaron Hill in the coming weeks.

News: Hudson (shoulder) will start on Sunday against the Brewers, according to Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com.
Impact: Hudson must have shown enough in his rehab start on Monday in Triple-A Reno to get back in the rotation. He pitched five innings in the game, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out two and only walking one. If he can regain his 2011 form, he will be a huge addition to a Diamondbacks rotation that, besides Wade Miley, has been largely disappointing.

Impact: Hill is having a mediocre campaign at the plate, hitting .235/.321/.396 with five homers and four stolen bases. That sort of production won't make him an everyday lock in the lineup with Roberts becoming a bigger part of the picture at second base.

Impact: Manager Kirk Gibson suggested that a good portion of Roberts' playing time could come at second base instead of third.

Impact: "He'll get a lot of playing time, yes," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "He was very productive [at Reno], we feel like he deserved an opportunity to come up here. It'll move Ryan Roberts to more of a utility guy, he might play more second base, move him around a little bit, he's versatile in that role." The Diamondbacks are grasping for solutions right now, and the decision to turn to Bell reflects a certain amount of desperation. A point in his favor is that he never really got an extended major league trial, with just 220 career major league at-bats. There's plenty of speculation that he's just keeping the seat warm for Matt Davidson - hitting the ground running will be vital for Bell.

News: Montero is day-to-day after straining his left groin during Monday's game, but said Tuesday that "it feels a lot better," the Diamondbacks' official site reports.
Impact: Montero stayed in the game immediately following the injury, but was pinch hit for when the Diamondbacks came up to bat. "I didn't feel any pop, thank God," Montero said. "It was just kind of crampy. It's still early in the season, you don't want it to get worse." It appears the 28-year-old was removed for precautionary reasons, but he may be held out until after Thursday's off-day. "A day or two, I don't think more than that, we've got two more games here, then a day off Thursday. I don't know we'll see," he said.

News: Hudson (shoulder) had a successful rehab assignment in Triple-A Reno on Monday, going five innings, allowing five hits, two runs (both earned), one walk while striking out two, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: If all continues as it is, Hudson will likely rejoin the D-Backs this weekend against the Brewers. Team sources say that Hudson's velocity topped out at 97 mph, a very encouraging sign. Ideally, Hudson will return to his 2011 form, when he won 16 games with a 3.49 ERA while striking out 169 in 33 starts.

News: Montero left Monday night's game in the sixth inning after chasing a pop foul behind home plate, the Diamondbacks' official site reports.
Impact: The Diamondbacks might be forced to make a move Tuesday if the injuries looks likely to cost Montero more than a game or two, given his position.

News: The Arizona Diamondbacks have recalled third baseman Josh Bell from Triple-A Reno and designated infielder Cody Ransom for assignment.
Impact: Bell was batting .381 with nine doubles, a triple, four home runs and 30 RBIs in 26 games for Reno. The 25-year-old switch-hitter was in Arizona's starting lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. Bell, 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, appeared in 79 major league games for Baltimore from 2010-11. He was acquired from the Orioles on April 21 for Mike Belfiore. Bell was a fourth-round draft pick of the Dodgers in 2005.

News: Montero left Monday's game in the bottom of the sixth inning with an apparent leg strain.
Impact: No specifics regarding the location of the strain were provided, but Henry Blanco took over when Montero's turn in the lineup came up in the sixth inning. Montero was 0-for-2 prior to departing and should be considered day-to-day.

Impact: It's a bit surprising that Bell is starting over Ryan Roberts against a lefty, but this could be an early indication that the D-Backs want to see if he can maintain any of the success he's had at hitter-friendly Reno. Interestingly enough, a low contact rate was likely the reason Cody Ransom was jettisoned from the roster, and avoiding the strikeout has been a major obstacle for Bell during his brief time in the big leagues and throughout his career in the minors.

Impact: While it recently appeared as though Roberts was on the brink of turning things around and taking back his starting job at third base, it's a bit concerning that he's sitting against a lefty (career .813 OPS against them) while Josh Bell immediately starts at third base despite a slightly worse .773 mark at Triple-A against southpaws over the past two seasons.

News: Bell has been called up by the D-Backs, the team's official Twitter feed reports.
Impact: He'll replace Cody Ransom on the roster and has a chance to push Ryan Roberts for playing time at third base, or at least work his way into an eventual platoon arrangement where Roberts sits against righties if he's able to hit during this opportunity against big league pitching. Bell carried a 1.048 OPS over 26 games at hitter-friendly Reno after being claimed off waivers by the D-Backs from the Orioles in April.

News: Putz recorded his ninth save of the season with a clean inning against the Royals on Sunday.
Impact: Putz struggled with the home run ball in the last half of April and the first week of May, resulting in a pair of blown saves and a 6.43 ERA. Still, Putz has a 16:1 K:BB ratio in his 14 innings this season and a secure grip on the closer job, so there shouldn't be any concerns going forward.

News: Miley picked up a fifth win with seven shutout innings, allowing just six hits and two walks Sunday against the Royals.
Impact: Miley has been fantastic as a replacement piece in the Diamondbacks' rotation following Josh Collmenter's demotion to the bullpen and Dan Hudson's injury, with a 2.14 ERA to go with the five wins. He's stranding five of six baserunners right now, however, and as that comes back to earth so will he. But how far? A 3.27 FIP gives reason for optimism, but he gives up loads of contact (7.8% swinging strike rate), and that means home runs will likely be coming too.

News: Schmidt went 3-for-4 with three runs, a double, a home run, a walk and four RBI for Triple-A Reno on Saturday.
Impact: Schmidt is a decent catcher if you're simply looking for organizational depth. He is slightly above-average defensively and has a little bit of pop in his bat, but he has yet to put together a strong enough season to warrant regular playing time in the majors. He did receive a call-up back in 2010, but didn't fare very well and hasn't been back since. If either Miguel Montero or Henry Blanco gets hurt, Schmidt will likely receive a promotion, but that's probably the only scenario that puts him in a Diamondbacks uniform this year.

News: Upton has gone 6-for-20 with a home run, four RBI, a 7:4 BB:K and a pair of stolen bases over his last six games.
Impact: According to the D-Backs' official site, Upton is seeing the ball better at the plate, which has significantly changed his plate discipline from where it's been throughout the first six-plus weeks of the season. "It's a combination of seeing the ball better and pitchers just not throwing strikes," Upton said. "I think early on I was chasing out of my zone a little bit. I have done a better job of making sure the pitches are in the zone. I also haven't been seeing many pitches over the plate." The surge over the past week could be foreshadowing a breakout for the struggling outfielder, as Upton's current .705 OPS is nearly 200 points below where he finished in 2011.

News: Breslow has posted a 17:8 K:BB over 20.2 innings in 18 appearances with the D-Backs this season.
Impact: He's been a very effective option in middle relief for manager Kirk Gibson, carrying a 1.31 ERA and 0.919 WHIP to this point. Breslow has provided a steady left-handed presence in the Arizona bullpen after Rule 5 pick Joe Paterson spent most of the 2011 campaign as the team's only relief option from the left side.

News: Roberts went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Saturday's loss to Kansas City.
Impact: According to the Arizona Republic, Roberts has changed his approach during batting practice and set up a game to help him work on driving pitches up the middle more regularly. It has paid off in recent weeks, as Roberts has a .340/.370/.440 line over his last 16 games while striking out just six times in his last 50 at-bats compared to 15 whiffs in his first 66. Further, Roberts has managed to take back the larger share of the at-bats at third base from Cody Ransom after finding his way to the bench regularly in late April.

News: Drew (ankle) will play in one or two more extended spring training games before heading to Triple-A Reno to begin his rehab assignment, the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: Given the severity of the injury that Drew is returning from, it should come as little surprise that the D-Backs are easing him along after he experienced soreness following an extended spring training game Thursday.

News: Goldschmidt went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the Diamondbacks' loss to the Royals on Saturday.
Impact: This was Goldschmidt's third three-hit game of May, but six hitless starts have neutralized any batting average gains. He has six doubles in the month but only one home run.

News: Kennedy allowed six runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings against the Royals on Saturday to take his fourth loss of the year.
Impact: This was his second six-run start of May, and he allowed another pair of home runs in this loss. Kennedy's HR/9 is up to 1.12 on the year after he posted a 0.8 last year.

Keep in mind, that Drew still hasn't been able to play in games on consecutive days, so his time spent at Reno could last a few weeks as he continues to work his way back into game shape.

Impact: He only needed one game at Triple-A Reno after three at High-A Visalia for a minor league rehab assignment. Young will replace A.J. Pollock on the roster, and should immediately return to the lineup Friday night.

News: Putz walked one batter but still pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his eighth save of the season Friday against the Royals.
Impact: That's now saves on back-to-back nights and three straight appearances without allowing a run. Putz credits a mechanical change for his increased velocity and reasonably improved command and looks to be a much safer option now than he did just two weeks ago.

News: Saunders allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two over six innings against the Royals on Friday.
Impact: After 105 pitches, Saunders left with the lead only to watch the bullpen give it up and leave him with a no-decision. Still, given the fact that he had coughed up a total of 12 runs in his two previous starts, losing the win was the last thing Saunders' owners were concerned with. His next start comes at home against the Dodgers, but considering their rash of injuries, he might just be an option to stream.

News: Young has a right shoulder contusion and has landed on the 15-day DL.
Impact: Young, the Diamondbacks' leading hitter at .405 with five homers and 13 RBIs, was injured while tracking down a fly ball by Pedro Alvarez in left-center in the fourth.

News: Bell went 3-for-5 with three doubles and three runs scored against Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday.
Impact: Bell hit a mini-slump, going 1-for-7 over his previous three games, but bounced back nicely here and seems ready to continue his assault on PCL pitching. Though he didn't clear the fences this game, two of his doubles went to the deepest part of the park and probably would have left the field of play at numerous other stadiums. He is hitting .409 with a 1.110 OPS and has four home runs and eight doubles since being called up to Triple-A.

Impact: Cody Ransom is starting at third base, while Roberts is getting a day off after starting each of the D-Backs' previous eight games.

Impact: It did not look good for Putz, as he allowed three straight singles to begin the ninth. He retired the next two batters on a strikeout and double play, however, to record his seventh save of the year. Even though Putz nailed down the save, things haven't come easy for him this year, as he has just three clean outings in 13 appearances.

Impact: He threw 54 pitches during an extended spring training game Wednesday, and manager Kirk Gibson said that Hudson is currently on track to return May 26 or 27 against the Brewers.

News: Putz's increased velocity during Tuesday's outing was the result of a mechanical change in his delivery, the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact: Pitching coach Charles Nagy spotted a flaw: Putz wasn't moving back in his delivery before coming to the plate, which ultimately may explain the lost velocity on his fastball earlier this season. Manager Kirk Gibson gave Putz a vote of confidence as his closer last week, and the return of the life on his fastball certainly bodes well for his efforts to remain in his current role.

News: Hudson (shoulder) threw 54 pitches over 2.1 innings in an extended spring training game on Wednesday, the Diamondbacks' official Twitter page reports.
Impact: Hudson gave up two runs on two hits and allowed two walks while striking out three. Afterwards, he said his "arm feels great. My command is not where I want it to be." He will throw a bullpen session on Saturday, and it appears he's on track to return near the end of the month.

Impact: Blanco will be behind the plate with Miguel Montero getting a day off. Left-hander Jamie Moyer, who will take the bump for Colorado, likely won't be happy to see Blanco in there. He's 5-for-11 lifetime against Moyer.
