Josh Johnson - #55 - Pitcher - 6'7" - 230 lbs
Sat. Nov 21, 2009 |
RotoWire
News: Johnson is not expected to sign a contract extension with the Marlins, the Miami Herald reports.
Impact: Johnson wants a four-year extension, but the Marlins offered only three years. "The Marlins sort of knew it was now or never," said Johnson's agent, Matt Sosnick. Johnson has two more years of salary arbitration before he will become a free agent. The Marlins likely will trade him before then if no deal is reached. Nick Johnson - #20 - First Base - 6'3" - 237 lbs

News: According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Nick Johnson may be on the Giants wish list this offseason.
Impact: The Giants are a team full of free swingers, so they could certainly benefit from a patient hitter like Johnson (99 BB, .426 OBP). Manager Bruce Bochy loves him apparently, and he won't cost an arm and a leg this hot stove season like Matt Holliday, Jason Bay and John Lackey certainly will. News: ESPN.com is reporting that the Florida Marlins and ace Josh Johnson are not close to a contract extension. Johnson's agent told ESPN that negotiatons with the team have reached an impasse.
Impact: Johnson will likely play under a one-year deal for next season before entering free agency in 2011. If Johnson and the Marlins can't get talks resumed, look for the team to try to trade him before the deadline next season. Chris Coghlan - # -

RotoWire
News: Coghlan was named the NL Rookie of the Year on Monday.
Impact: He just beat out the Phillies' JA Happ for the award, on the strength of a .388 batting average in August and September. Whether Coghlan stays in left field next season or shifts back to second base will depend on what the Marlins do with arbitration-eligible Dan Uggla, but wherever he plays he should be provide a solid OBP at the top of the Florida batting order. Chris Coghlan - #8 - Left Field - 6'1" - 190 lbs
Mon. Nov 16, 2009 |
STATS
News: Coghlan is the National League Rookie of the Year.
Impact: Coghlan edged Philadelphia Phillies pitcher J.A. Happ in a close race, receiving 17 first-place votes and 105 points Monday in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He hit .321 and scored 84 runs in 128 games for Florida. Chris Coghlan - #8 - Left Field - 6'1" - 190 lbs

News: The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is reporting that Chris Coghlan has been named the National League's Rookie of the Year for 2009. J.A. Happ was the runner-up.
Impact: While Happ was very deserving, the choice of Coghlan cannot be quibbled with. He hit .321 with 164 hits, 113 of which came after the All-Star break. He'll be an outfielder to take a long, hard look at in the earlier mid rounds next season. Dan Uggla - #6 - Second Base - 5'11" - 200 lbs
Sun. Nov 15, 2009 |
Fanball
News: According to the Miami Herald, the Marlins' number one offseason priority is trading second baseman Dan Uggla for "cheap, young talent."
Impact: It's about that time. Uggla is due a raise in arbitration this offseason after hitting 123 home runs the past four seasons, and the Marlins believe Emilio Bonifacio is ready to take over at second base. The chances of Uggla being on the team's opening day 2010 roster are very slim. Dan Uggla - #6 - Second Base - 5'11" - 200 lbs
Fri. Nov 13, 2009 |
RotoWire
News: Uggla is resistant to playing a position other than second base next season, according to a Yahoo! Sports report.
Impact: Uggla is likely to be shopped by the Marlins this offseason, as he will receive a raise over his $5.35 million 2009 salary and has two more arbitration years remaining. He doesn't have too much say as to what position he plays, but the good news for fantasy owners is that Uggla will retain second base eligibility at least for next season. News: According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, there is a possibility that Dan Uggla could make a move to left field.
Impact: The Braves are looking for a corner outfield bat with pop, and could be interested in making a deal with the Marlins, who could shed salary by trading Uggla. The problem is that the slugging second baseman hasn't played in the outfield since 2004 when he was with Arizona's Double-A club. Still, the Braves are desperate for power and Uggla has blasted at least 30 homers in each of the last three seasons. Hayden Penn - #48 - Pitcher - 6'3" - 199 lbs
Wed. Nov 11, 2009 |
RotoWire
News: The Marlins have added Penn to their 40-man roster.
Impact: The move was made to protect Penn from the Rule 5 Draft in December. Around unsuccessful work from the Florida bullpen, Penn was successful as a starter with Triple-A New Orleans in the Pacific Coast League where he posted a 62:26 K:BB ratio in 70 innings over 14 appearances -- 13 starts -- last season. Cameron Maybin - #24 - Center Field - 6'4" - 205 lbs
Tue. Nov 10, 2009 |
STATS
News: Maybin, 22, underwent surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder. The Marlins announced everything went well, and he is expected to be ready when spring training opens in February.
Impact: Maybin hit .250 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 54 games last season, but batted .293 with eight doubles, three home runs, 10 RBIs and 19 runs scored in September. Cameron Maybin - #24 - Center Field - 6'4" - 205 lbs

RotoWire
News: Maybin will undergo surgery Monday to repair a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
Impact: The injury bothered him for most of last season, but not enough to keep him out of the lineup in September. Maybin is expected to be fully recovered by spring training, and should be the Marlins' Opening Day center fielder. Cameron Maybin - #24 - Center Field - 6'4" - 205 lbs

News: Cameron Maybin will undergo surgery Monday to repair a partially-torn left labrum, according to the Sun Sentinel.
Impact: Maybin experienced pain during the season, but it was not severe enough to force him out of the lineup. He is expected to be recovered in time for spring training. Ross Gload - #7 - First Base - 6'1" - 190 lbs
Fri. Nov 6, 2009 |
RotoWire
News: Gload filed for free agency after the Marlins declined a $2.6 million option in his contract for 2010, the Associated Press reports.
Impact: Gload had just a .729 OPS at first base and just a .329 OBP, so he may have to fight for a roster spot next spring. Hunter Jones - #62 - Pitcher - 6'4" - 235 lbs
Thu. Nov 5, 2009 |
Fanball
News: Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez have been dealt from Boston to Florida in exchange for outfielder Jeremy Hermida, according to Juan C. Rodriguez's (Sun Sentinel) twitter page.
Impact: The 25-year-old reliever held a 9.24 ERA over 12.2 innings in 2008, and the Sox look to get the better end of this deal by acquiring former top prospect Hermida. Jose Alvarez - # -

News: Alvarez and Hunter Jones were traded to Florida from Boston for Jeremy Hermida, ESPN.com reports.
Impact: Alvarez isn't a highly regarded prospect, but has been productive with a 2.26 ERA and 74:16 K:BB ratio in 107.2 innings between Low-A and High-A last season. At just 21 years old next season, he could move up quickly in the Florida system. Hunter Jones - # -

News: Jones and Jose Alvarez were traded to Florida for Jeremy Hermida, the Boston Globe reports.
Impact: Jones had a 9.24 ERA with Boston, but could emerge as a lefty specialist in the Florida bullpen. With the Red Sox, he held lefties to a .604 OPS vs a 1.113 OPS against righties. Josh Johnson - #55 - Pitcher - 6'7" - 230 lbs

News: The Florida Marlins have hired Randy St. Claire as their new pitching coach, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Impact: St. Claire previously held the same position for the Nationals for six and a half seasons before getting fired last June. While he did not have the greatest talent to work with there, it should be interesting to see how he fares with the Marlins' considerably more talented young arms. Michael Stanton - # -
Sat. Oct 24, 2009 |
RotoWire
News: The Marlins pulled Stanton from the Arizona Fall League due to a stiff back, RotoWire's Bernie Pleskoff reports.
Impact: It's a shame, too, as Stanton was hitting .478/.538/.609 in AFL play. Greg Burns replaced Stanton on the roster. |
