Carlos Beltran - #15 - Center Field - 6'1" - 205lbs
Fri. Mar 19, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Beltran will test his knee by running "sometime in April," and he won't return to the lineup until early May at the earliest, the New York Post reports.
Impact: Beltran is working out on his knee and says it's improving, but he hasn't started running, which looks like his next big benchmark. Beltran underwent surgery to remove several floating bodies from his right knee in January and it was initially thought he could return by May 1. However, this report makes it seem like he could be out several weeks longer. At least we're getting a more definite timetable for his recovery. While he is sidelined, Angel Pagan is still the frontrunner to open the year in center but Fernando Martinez has had a strong spring and could get a shot at holding down the fort until Beltran returns. Pedro Feliciano - #25 - Pitcher - 5'10" - 192lbs
Thu. Mar 18, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Feliciano, who left Thursday's spring training game after being struck in the right leg by a batted ball, has a bruised knee, Brian Costa of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Impact: The Mets and Feliciano dodged a bullet as the injury is fairly minor. Look for him to likely miss a few days of action to allow the swelling to go down. If this doesn't force the Mets to try and sign Joe Beimel or Ron Mahay, nothing will. Pedro Feliciano - #25 - Pitcher - 5'10" - 192lbs
Thu. Mar 18, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Feliciano left Thursday's spring training game after being struck in the right leg by a batted ball, according to MLB.com.
Impact: Feliciano threw a few warm up pitches after the incident, but was taken out of the game. The injury could be quite minor, but there has been no official word on its severity. A key piece of the bullpen as an always-available lefty, the Mets may be cautious with him. If the injury turns out to be serious, look for the Mets to increase their efforts to sign Joe Beimel or Ron Mahay. Alex Cora - #13 - Short Stop - 6'0" - 200lbs
Thu. Mar 18, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Cora and not rookie Ruben Tejada would begin the season as the Mets' starting shortstop if Jose Reyes starts the year on the DL, the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Impact: Mets manager Jerry Manuel suggested that he'd want to keep Tejada in a low pressure situation, if he made the team. Cora essentially represents replacement value - break glass only in the case of emergency. Fernando Martinez - #26 - Left Field - 6'1" - 190lbs
Wed. Mar 17, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Martinez hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning Wednesday to lift the Mets over the Red Sox.
Impact: There seems to be a bit of a disconnect between GM Omar Minaya and manager Jerry Manuel regarding Martinez due to his huge spring, but the smart money is still likely on him starting the season in Triple-A so he can get regular playing time. Fernando Nieve - #38 - Pitcher - 6'0" - 195lbs
Tue. Mar 16, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Nieve allowed two runs and five hits in three innings Monday against the Cardinals.
Impact: Nieve's main competition for the fifth spot, Jon Niese, allowed three runs and four hits in his three innings. Still in the mix is Hisanori Takahashi, who has been impressive in relief, Pat Misch and Nelson Figueroa, who is unscored upon in eight innnings. It looks this battle will go down to the end of Spring Training. Jon Niese - #49 - Pitcher - 6'4" - 215lbs
Tue. Mar 16, 2010 |

News: Niese allowed three runs and four hits with two strikeouts in three innings against the Cardinals Monday.

Mon. Mar 15, 2010 |
STATS
News: The Mets have sent Dickey and young catcher Josh Thole to their minor league camp.
Impact: Dickey is hoping to make the Mets this season as a knuckleballer. He's 35 and is trying to master the dancing pitch. Josh Thole - #30 - Catcher -
Mon. Mar 15, 2010 |
STATS
News: The Mets have sent Thole and veteran pitcher R.A. Dickey to their minor league camp.
Impact: Thole starred in Double-A last season and hit .321 in 17 games with the Mets. The Mets still have catchers Rod Barajas, Henry Blanco and Omir Santos competing for two spots, so the 23-year-old Thole will start the season at Triple-A Buffalo. Thole says he's been working on his defense and wants to improve in that area. Angel Pagan - #16 - Center Field - 6'2" - 195lbs
Mon. Mar 15, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Pagan hit a two-run, walkoff home run in the Mets' win over St. Louis Monday.
Impact: Pagan should open the year as the Mets' starting center fielder and leadoff hitter with both Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes likely sidelined for the first month of the year. Francisco Rodriguez - #75 - Pitcher - 6'0" - 195lbs
Mon. Mar 15, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Rodriguez (pink eye) threw a 1-2-3 inning in his spring debut Monday against St. Louis.
Impact: Rodriguez was sidelined the first part of camp with pink eye but believes he will only need two weeks to be ready for the start of the season. His fastball sat in the 91-92 mph range and had a good curveball in his first spring action. Kiko Calero - #40 - Pitcher - 6'1" - 210lbs
Mon. Mar 15, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Calero, who signed 10 days ago, finally made his Mets debut Sunday. He tossed a scoreless seventh, but allowed an infield single, walk and hit a batter, the NY Daily News' Mets blog reports.
Impact: Calero indicated he's still rusty and his signature slider isn't yet ready for major-league hitters. With two weeks left to spring training, barring something unforeseen, Calero should open the year as Francisco Rodriguez's set-up man. Francisco Rodriguez - #75 - Pitcher - 6'0" - 195lbs
Mon. Mar 15, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Rodriguez will make his spring training debut on Monday, MLB.com reports.
Impact: Rodriguez suffered from a "pink eye" infection earlier in camp, but he has fully recovered and is on track to begin the regular season in the bullpen. Johan Santana - #57 - Pitcher - 6'0" - 208lbs
Mar 14, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Santana (elbow) looked great on Sunday, striking out four and walking none over four scoreless innings.
Impact: Santana allowed just three hits, throwing all the pitches in his arsenal while keeping the ball down. He stressed again after the game that the important thing is his arm feels great, but the results he earned on Sunday are good to see as well. David Wright - #5 - Third Base - 6'0" - 217lbs
Sat. Mar 13, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Wright went 1-for-3 with a home run in the Mets' win over the Tigers Saturday.
Impact: He now has three home runs on the spring after hitting 10 all of last season. If the power is back for Wright, then he will truly be worth his likely first-round selection. Ruben Tejada - #79 - Short Stop - 5'11" - 162lbs
Thu. Mar 11, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: With Jose Reyes out indefinitely due to hyperthyroidism, Tejada may open the year as the Mets' starting shortstop, the NY Daily News reports.
Impact: Tejada makes solid contact, but he has a small, 6-foot, 160-pound frame and isn't projected to hit for much power. He hit .289 with five homers and 46 RBI in 488 at-bats with Double-A Binghamton last season. Alex Cora, who filled in for Reyes last season, is also in the mix, but Tejada is viewed as being superior defensively. Mike Pelfrey - #34 - Pitcher - 6'7" - 230lbs
Thu. Mar 11, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Pelfrey had a bad first inning on Thursday against the Red Sox, giving up three runs on four hits, but settled in over his next two innings and finished with four strikeouts and one walk. He also developed a blister on his hand during the outing.
Impact: Pelfrey had been hit in the knee by a line drive between Thursday and his last start, but for the most part he looks over that. The blister is likely not a concern. Jose Reyes - #7 - Short Stop - 6'1" - 200lbs
Thu. Mar 11, 2010 |
STATS
News: Reyes has been told to rest and refrain from athletic activity until his thyroid levels normalize. Reyes was taken out of the lineup March 4 for additional medical tests, and the team said Tuesday that he has an overactive thyroid.
Impact: New York said Thursday that Reyes has been told to change his diet and will be able to resume playing baseball when his thyroid levels are normal. His agent, Peter Greenberg, said Reyes will be sidelined for 2-to-8 weeks. He missed most of last season with an unrelated leg injury. Jose Reyes - #7 - Short Stop - 6'1" - 200lbs
Thu. Mar 11, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: The additional blood tests taken on Reyes confirmed that Reyes's thyroid hormone blood levels are elevated and he is hyperthyroid, according a Mets press release.
Impact: As prescribed by the doctors and specialists, Reyes' treatment plan is to rest, refrain from athletic activity and make changes in his diet. The doctors will monitor Reyes' thyroid levels through regular blood tests. Once his thyroid levels return to normal, he will be cleared to resume baseball activities. No timetable has been set for this, but the expectation is that Reyes will need to rest from two-to-eight weeks to allow his thyroid level to return to normal. It is believed that he will start the year on the DL and his availability for the first month or more of the season is in doubt. Jon Niese - #49 - Pitcher - 6'4" - 215lbs
Thu. Mar 11, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Niese allowed three hits and three runs in two innings Wednesday as his ERA climbed to 7.71 in two starts, the NY Newsday reports.
Impact: Niese walked two in his outing and needs to do a better job of throwing strikes. The good news is that his main competition for the fifth rotation spot, Fernando Nieve, also struggled and Niese still has the upper hand for that spot. Chris Carter - #23 - Right Field - 6'0" - 230lbs
Thu. Mar 11, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Carter previously was known for being acquired for Billy Wagner. But after Carter homered for the third time in three at-bats, including twice Monday in the ninth inning, he's getting noticed as a lefthanded-hitting candidate off the bench, the NY Newsday reports.
Impact: Carter, whose short stroke is well suited for pinch-hitting, will need to continue to have a strong camp and has to beat out Frank Catalanotto and Mike Jacobs for what looks to be the final bench spot on the Mets. Jose Reyes - #7 - Short Stop - 6'1" - 200lbs
Thu. Mar 11, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Two people familiar with Reyes' situation said Wednesday that the elevated thyroid levels, which were confirmed by more tests in New York this week, seem to have been caused by a temporary condition that may not require further treatment, the NY Newsday reports.
Impact: The Reyes case appears to be headed for a happy ending, still GM Omar Minaya refuses to provide a timetable for Reyes' return until the Mets receive the last series of test results, which were expected by Thursday. If Reyes is cleared, as expected, he could return by Friday and maybe play in a spring training game by early next week. Kiko Calero - #40 - Pitcher - 6'1" - 210lbs
Wed. Mar 10, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Calero faced hitters in batting practice Tuesday and could make his spring debut Thursday, Adam Rubin of the NY Daily News reports (via twitter).
Impact: With Kelvim Escobar sidelined indefinitely, if Calero can remain healthy he should open the season as Francisco Rodriguez's set-up man. Jose Reyes - #7 - Short Stop - 6'1" - 200lbs
Wed. Mar 10, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: The Mets said on Tuesday that Reyes is expected to remain in New York while the results of additional blood tests are used to determine his treatment after tests confirmed he has an overactive thyroid. However, Reyes contradicted that diagnosis, ESPN reports.
Impact: Reyes said, "The specialists who took care of me in New York have told me that I'm fine and that there's nothing wrong with my thyroid. The test [taken to follow one conducted during his physical] showed that I'm fine. We just have to wait for the results of the additional test. The [doctors] found inflammation in my throat and no medicine to treat the thyroid or any other condition has been prescribed." Stay tuned as the Mets' difficulties when it comes to injuries appears to have reared its ugly head and a clarification on the ailment should come by Thursday. Johan Santana - #57 - - 6'0" - 208lbs
Tue. Mar 9, 2010 |
STATS
News: According to the Houston Chronicle, the Astros ruined Johan Santana's heartily-anticipated spring training debut by pounding the Mets ace for four runs in 1 2/3 innings and winning 8-4 on Tuesday.
Impact: Santana went 13-9 with a 3.13 ERA in 2009. Johan Santana - #57 - Pitcher - 6'0" - 208lbs
Tue. Mar 9, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Santana (surgery to remove bone chips) made his first spring start Tuesday, allowing four runs on six hits in one and two-thirds innings against the Astros, the NY Daily News' Mets blog reports.
Impact: Santana threw 47 pitches, 33 for strikes, but was more focused on the fact that he is healthy rather than the results. Santana believes that with four more spring starts and in-between bullpen sessions he should regain his command and control but he is able to fully extend his arm without pain, something he was unable to do last season. Jose Reyes - #7 - Short Stop - 6'1" - 200lbs
Tue. Mar 9, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: An exam of Reyes confirmed an overactive thyroid. He will remain in New York to await results of additional blood tests that will help further determine his treatment, the NY Daily News' Mets blog reports.
Impact: Those test results are not expected back before Thursday. The condition, which was confirmed by the exam, is believed to be easily treated. We will not know when Reyes will be back or the course of the treatment until Thursday. Francisco Rodriguez - #75 - - 6'0" - 195lbs
Tue. Mar 9, 2010 |

News: Rodriguez, who missed more than two weeks of camp with conjunctivitis, threw a bullpen session Tuesday. It was his first time on a mound since Feb. 28.
Impact: Rodriguez returned to camp Monday and could pitch in a game as soon as Saturday. Mike Pelfrey - #34 - - 6'7" - 230lbs
Tue. Mar 9, 2010 |

News: Pelfrey has returned to the mound after being sidelined by a sore right leg. Pelfrey was struck on the outside of the knee by a comebacker during his first spring start Saturday. He stayed in the game but he pushed a scheduled bullpen session back a day to Tuesday because the leg was sore.
Impact: Pelfrey says his leg is sore but it's tolerable. He will make his next scheduled spring start Thursday against the Red Sox. Francisco Rodriguez - #75 - Pitcher - 6'0" - 195lbs
Tue. Mar 9, 2010 |

News: Rodriguez (pink eye) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, the Associated Press reports.
Impact: It was the first time on a mound since Feb. 28 for Rodriguez, who could pitch in a game as soon as Saturday. Mike Pelfrey - #34 - Pitcher - 6'7" - 230lbs
Tue. Mar 9, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Pelfrey was back on the mound Tuesday after being struck on the right knee by a comebacker this past weekend, the Associated Press reports.
Impact: Pelfrey indicated that he still had a large bruise, but plans to make his next scheduled start Thursday against the Red Sox. "It's a little sore but tolerable," he said. "Hopefully after two more days it will feel a lot better." John Maine - #33 - Pitcher - 6'4" - 200lbs
Mon. Mar 8, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Maine was pleased with his first spring start, although he was pulled with two out in the second inning because he was on a strict pitch count to avoid overdoing it this spring, the NY Daily News' Mets blog reports.
Impact: Maine allowed two hits and one run, striking out four while walking one in a 39-pitch performance. He is slated to be anywhere from the team's second to fourth starter based on his and the other starters' performance. Francisco Rodriguez - #75 - - 6'0" - 195lbs
Mon. Mar 8, 2010 |
STATS
News: Rodriguez returned to New York Mets camp on Monday after being hampered by conjunctivitis for more than two weeks.
Impact: Rodriguez had been told to stay away from the team until the pink eye cleared, but the contagious infection took longer than expected to improve. He was sick when he reported to New York's spring facility, but it went undiagnosed until just before full-squad workouts began Feb. 25. Kelvim Escobar - #45 - Pitcher - 6'1" - 230lbs
Mon. Mar 8, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Escobar has stopped throwing entirely after feeling some discomfort in his right shoulder when he played catch last week, the Newark Star-Ledger's Mets blog reports. "When I tried to throw last week, it was weak," Escobar said. "It didn't feel right."
Impact: Escobar, whose one-year, $1.25 million contract is guaranteed, said he has no plans to resume throwing in the immediate future. For now, he said he needs to continue to build strength in the shoulder, which has limited him to just one major-league game since 2007. This is starting to sound a lot like last year when Escobar kept having difficulty with his arm, pushing his return date back repeatedly and then missed the whole season. Francisco Rodriguez - #75 - Pitcher - 6'0" - 195lbs
Mon. Mar 8, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Rodriguez (pink eye) appears to have received final clearance from the doctors and rejoined the Mets Monday, the NY Newsday's Mets blog reports.
Impact: Rodriguez has been on a regimen of eye drops for the highly-contagious case of pink eye, which has infected his entire family as well. He has tried to stay in shape throwing with his brother in the driveway at his home in Port St. Lucie. As for when he might pitch again, K-Rod said he has "no idea." The last time he threw off a mound was a week ago before he was banned from the clubhouse but he is not expected to need more than two weeks of spring training to be ready for the season. Nick Evans - #6 - Left Field - 6'3" - 210lbs
Mon. Mar 8, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Evans is unable to throw due to a strained forearm and will miss the next week, David Lennon of Newsday reports (via twitter).
Impact: Evans, who is able to hit not throw, is expected to start the year at Triple-A, so this absence shouldn't impact that plan. Fernando Tatis - #17 - First Base - 5'10" - 180lbs
Mon. Mar 8, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Tatis is skipping the Mets' road game to face the Marlins Monday due to a sore left knee, David Lennon of Newsday reports (via twitter).
Impact: The injury is not believed to be serious and Tatis is day-to-day. Tatis is slated to back-up at multiple infield positions once the season starts. Mike Pelfrey - #34 - Pitcher - 6'7" - 230lbs
Mar 7, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: The Mets announced Sunday that Pelfrey underwent an X-Ray on his right knee, and the results were negative.
Impact: Pelfrey was hit by a line drive during his outing against the Nationals Saturday, but was able to continue his outing after he was hit. As of now, he is not expected to miss a spring start. Francisco Rodriguez - #75 - Pitcher - 6'0" - 195lbs
Mar 7, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Rodriguez remains sidelined by pink eye.
Impact: Rodriguez has been on antibiotics for 10 days, yet he still has not been cleared to rejoin the Mets and workout together with his teammates. As long as he makes it back within the next week, Rodriguez should be able to be ready for the season. Oliver Perez - #46 - Pitcher - 6'3" - 217lbs
Mar 7, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Perez (knee) allowed five runs on seven hits in three innings, but walked just one batter and threw strikes (33 in 49 pitches) in his spring debut in the Mets' 6-5 win against the Nationals Sunday.
Impact: The goal for Perez Sunday was to throw strikes and have better rhythm on the mound, two things he accomplished Sunday. Going forward, the end results will be important, but that took a back seat in his Sunday start. Mike Pelfrey - #34 - - 6'7" - 230lbs
Sat. Mar 6, 2010 |
STATS
News: Pelfrey allowed four runs - three earned - on seven hits in the first two innings he worked, finishing with a 1-2-3 third on Saturday against Washington.
Impact: The right-hander took a Cristian Guzman liner off the outside of his right knee in the second, sustaining a minor bruise. It doesn't appear to be serious. Mike Jacobs - #17 - First Base - 6'3" - 215lbs
Sat. Mar 6, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Jacobs homered in the Mets' 14-6 win over the Nationals Saturday.
Impact: Jacobs is battling Frank Catalanotto for what looks to be the final spot on the Mets. His possible power off the bench could give him the edge over Catalanotto. Elmer Dessens - #64 - Pitcher - 5'11" - 200lbs
Sat. Mar 6, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Dessens pitched a scoreless ninth Saturday in his first action since Tuesday, when he was struck in the right knee by a line drive from Brian McCann, the NY Daily News reports.
Impact: Dessens is earmarked for Triple-A but it's good to see he wasn't seriously injured when he was hit by the line drive. Mike Pelfrey - #34 - Pitcher - 6'7" - 230lbs
Sat. Mar 6, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Pelfrey's line in his first spring start Saturday against the Nationals didn't look pretty - seven hits, four runs (three earned), no walks or strikeouts in three innings - but there was some positive signs, the NY Daily News reports.
Impact: Pelfrey was hurt somewhat by poor defense behind him. He also was able to get some work in on a splitter, a new pitch he is trying to introduce this spring. In addition, he showed better composure and tempo on the mound than he did last season. Fernando Martinez - #26 - Left Field - 6'1" - 190lbs
Sat. Mar 6, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Martinez had a big game, going 4-for-4 with two solo homers to lift his spring average to .667, in the Mets' 14-6 win over the Nationals Saturday.
Impact: Despite the big game and spring, Martinez is ticketed to start the year at Triple-A Buffalo. What is a good sign is that he is driving the ball and hitting for power, an issue for him in the past. Jon Niese - #49 - Pitcher - 6'4" - 215lbs
Fri. Mar 5, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Niese (hamstring) struck out five and walked two while giving up one run on three hits over 2.2 innings on Friday.
Impact: He's been missing plenty of bats early on this spring, which bodes well for his chances of locking down the No. 5 starter spot. Don't forget, he's only 23 and there's more upside with him than many of the Mets' other candidates. Jose Reyes - #7 - Short Stop - 6'1" - 200lbs
Fri. Mar 5, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Reyes' (hamstring) thyroid issue is very common and treatable, David Lennon of NY Newsday reports.
Impact: This is very good news for Reyes and the Mets. He'll likely have to be put on medication as part of his treatment, but it sounds like he'll avoid a prolonged shutdown that could have accompanied a more serious condition. No word yet as to when exactly he'll be in the lineup for a Grapefruit League game at this time. Gary Matthews Jr. - #19 - Center Field - 6'3" - 225lbs
Fri. Mar 5, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: The Reds quickly refuted rumors that they were interested in acquiring Matthews if he loses the starting center field job to Angel Pagan, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact: A Reds source said that they had "zero interest" in Matthews. Given how many outfielders that they already have in camp, that makes sense. Jose Reyes - #7 - Short Stop - 6'1" - 200lbs

News: Reyes, who was scratched from making his first spring start Thursday due to the need for a follow-up on his initial physical, has been scratched again Friday, the NY Daily News' Mets blog reports.
Impact: Reyes has a hyperactive thyroid and is headed back to New York for further examination. He is not allowed to do any activity until more tests are conducted. Kiko Calero - #40 - Pitcher - 6'1" - 210lbs
Thu. Mar 4, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Calero has signed a minor league deal with the Mets, the NY Daily News reports.
Impact: He was effective in 60 appearances for the Marlins last season (1.95 ERA), but injury concerns kept him on the free-agent market through the start of spring training. The addition of Calero should help the back of the Mets' bullpen given the uncertainty surrounding Kelvim Escobar. Johan Santana - #57 - - 6'0" - 208lbs

News: Santana completed his last big test before pitching in a game, throwing two simulated innings Thursday. Facing hitters for the first time since having surgery on his left elbow late last season, Santana threw 40 pitches. Santana is scheduled to make his first start of the exhibition season on Tuesday at home against Houston.
Impact: The two-time Cy Young winner walked a batter in the first simulated inning Thursday, but especially was pleased to see Josh Thole, who is known as a good contact hitter, swing and miss at a couple of his sliders. Thole and fellow catcher Rod Barajas were the two batters Santana faced. "It felt really good because I had all the mechanics and everything working," Santana said. News: Reyes was scratched from New York's lineup Thursday for follow-up lab work related to his team physical, but a team spokesperson said he has been cleared to play.
Impact: Reyes said Thursday morning after a second round of blood work that he feels fine, and the testing was not related to the torn hamstring that sidelined him most of last season. He went to the doctor Thursday afternoon, and the team spokesperson said "everything came back OK." Reyes then returned to camp for light batting practice. Reyes did not provide any specific reasons for the tests except to say that it was part of a routine physical. Kiko Calero - #40 - - 6'1" - 210lbs
Thu. Mar 4, 2010 |
STATS
News: The Mets and Calero have agreed to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training. The Mets announced the move in a statement Thursday.
Impact: The 35-year-old Calero pitched for the Florida Marlins last season, going 2-2 with a 1.95 ERA in 67 relief appearances. He allowed 36 hits with 30 walks and 69 strikeouts in 60 innings, leading the Marlins' bullpen in ERA. Jose Reyes - #7 - Short Stop - 6'1" - 200lbs

News: Reyes, who was scratched from his scheduled spring debut Thursday due to an issue with his original physical, checked out okay from his doctor's vist and has been cleared to resume playing, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports (via Twitter).
Impact: That sound you hear is the exhale from the Mets and all Reyes owners. Look for Reyes to be in the lineup Friday. Johan Santana - #57 - Pitcher - 6'0" - 208lbs
Thu. Mar 4, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Santana (elbow) threw a successful bullpen session on Thursday, MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez reports.
Impact: Santana said he felt good after throwing about 40 pitches. He will make his spring training debut on Tuesday against Houston. Jose Reyes - #7 - Short Stop - 6'1" - 200lbs
Thu. Mar 4, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Reyes (torn hamstring tendon), who was slated to make his first spring start Thursday against the Cardinals, has been scratched, the NY Daily News reports.
Impact: Reyes said that his initial physical raised a small concern with doctors, so he needed to do additional blood work on Thursday morning. He'll visit the doctor again at noon and added that he has no physical problems. For now, view this as a minor bump in the road, but monitor it closely given the team's previous issues dealing with ailments. Ryota Igarashi - #18 - Pitcher - 5'10" - 190lbs
Thu. Mar 4, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Igarashi, who spent 11 seasons with the Yakult Swallows and signed with the Mets this offseason, tossed a scoreless ninth inning in the Mets' 4-2 win over Braves Tuesday, the NY Daily News reports.
Impact: Igarashi is being counted upon to emerge as a reliable eighth-inning arm since Kelvim Escobar is likely to open the season on the disabled list. Igarashi estimated he threw 80% four-seam fastballs in his Mets debut, although his signature in-season pitch will be a splitter. The Mets are encouraging Igarashi to use a slider instead of a curveball, which is something he will be working on during the spring. Pat Misch - #48 - Pitcher - 6'2" - 196lbs
Thu. Mar 4, 2010 |
RotoWire
News: Misch, who is trailing at least two other candidates, Jon Niese and Fernando Nieve, for the fifth starter's job, tossed three scoreless innings in a B game against the Braves Wednesday, the NY Newsday reports.
Impact: Manager Jerry Manuel sees Misch, who is out of options and would need to pass through waivers to be sent down to Triple-A Buffalo, competing against Hisanori Takahashi for a possible long relief role. Carlos Beltran - #15 - Center Field - 6'1" - 205lbs
Wed. Mar 3, 2010 |

News: Beltran talked to federal investigators last week about a Canadian doctor accused of selling an unapproved drug and said he recommended the physician to teammate Jose Reyes.
Impact: Beltran went to Toronto last summer seeking Dr. Anthony Galea's opinion on his bruised right knee, the All-Star said Tuesday. He worked with Galea for a month and felt better following a rehab program, but his knee regressed when he went home to Puerto Rico. "I have nothing to worry (about), nothing to hide,'' Beltran said. ``I just went there for an opinion for my knee.'' Fernando Martinez - #26 - Left Field - 6'1" - 190lbs

News: Martinez (knee) went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI against the Braves on Monday.
Impact: The acquisition of Gary Matthews Jr. likely puts Martinez back at Triple-A to play everyday at the beginning of the season, but he still has a very bright future having made his MLB debut prior to his 21st birthday. Carlos Beltran - #15 - Center Field - 6'1" - 205lbs

News: Beltran said Tuesday that like Jose Reyes, he too was questioned by the FBI last week about his association with doctor Anthony Galea, who is under investigation for distributing performance-enhancing drugs, the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Impact: Just as Reyes did Sunday, though, Beltran said he did not receive human growth hormone or any other illegal substance from Dr. Galea. The relationship between Beltran and Galea was not publicly known before Tuesday, but Beltran said he was treated by Galea for about a month last summer while he was sidelined by a bone bruise in his right knee. News: Rodriguez (pink eye) saw a doctor yesterday and was not given clearance to rejoin the Mets as he is still contagious, David Lennon of Newsday reports (via twitter).
Impact: Rodriguez should only be sidelined a few more days. He is throwing on the side to keep his arm in shape and should have plenty of time to be ready for the season. Daniel Murphy - #28 - First Base - 6'2" - 214lbs

News: Murphy committed 10 errors in 101 games at first, including a flubbed grounder that handed a win to Atlanta in September. Murphy also had some difficulties at the plate last year after hitting .313 in 49 games as a rookie in 2008. He was down to .234 last season after an 0-for-3 night in Baltimore on June 16, but he picked it up from there.
Impact: Now sure of his spot, Murphy changed his offseason workout routine to prepare for the job. He also got some fielding lessons from 11-time Gold Glove first baseman Keith Hernandez right before spring training started. ``Keith was great. He added a lot of things to first base I hadn't ever really thought of, some things to work on,'' Murphy said. ``The biggest thing I thought was just getting to know your other infielders.'' News: The Mets got an encouraging outing from Jonathon Niese, who is coming back after tearing his right hamstring last year. The left-hander struck out the side in the first and worked around a one-out walk during a scoreless second.
Impact: Niese was hurt covering first base against St. Louis on Aug. 5, and collapsed when he tried to throw a practice pitch - one of the lasting images from a trying season for the Mets. He spent three weeks in bed after surgery to repair his hamstring and couldn't walk normally for six weeks. "It's a good feeling to face hitters in a game situation. It's been a while,'' said Niese, who is trying to win the No. 5 spot in the rotation. "It's good to get off to a good start." Jose Reyes - #7 - Short Stop - 6'1" - 200lbs

News: Reyes hit the first pitch from Tobi Stoner into the right-field corner for a two-run triple, coasting into third in his first game-like setting since he was sidelined for most of last season by an injured right leg. "I just feel happy that I made it to third base with no problem, at that time,'' a grinning Reyes said. ``But like I said, there's nothing to worry about. I feel good. No pain, pain-free. I feel good to be playing the game again.''
Impact: Reyes, a switch-hitting shortstop who has been in the leadoff spot for most of his career, batted third during the scrimmage. Manager Jerry Manuel is toying with the move with All-Star center fielder Carlos Beltran expected to miss the start of the season following right knee surgery. Jose Reyes - #7 - Short Stop - 6'1" - 200lbs

News: Reyes (torn hamstring tendon), on the first pitch he saw in an intrasquad game, hit a two-run triple to right field.
Impact: Reyes, batting third, lined a pitch off the chalk down the right field line and showed no signs of a limp while legging out the triple. While it's very early in camp, seeing Reyes run without a limp in a baseball activity is a good sign that he is healthy. Jon Niese - #49 - Pitcher - 6'4" - 215lbs

News: Niese tossed two scoreless inning in a Mets' intrasquad game; his first action since tearing his hamstring tendon on Aug. 5.
Impact: Niese struck out the side in the first, and though it's just an intrasqaud game, he showed why he is the favorite for the fifth spot in the Mets rotation. Jose Reyes - #7 - Short Stop - 6'1" - 200lbs

News: Reyes says he met with federal investigators last week about a Canadian doctor accused of selling an unapproved drug known as Actovegin. Dr. Anthony Galea, who also has treated golfer Tiger Woods and several other professional athletes, is facing four drug-related charges in his country. Galea's assistant also has been charged in the U.S. for having HGH and another drug while crossing the border in September.
Impact: Reyes says he talked to the FBI investigators at the Mets' spring facility in Port St. Lucie for about 45 minutes. Reyes says they asked him what Galea did when he treated him for his injured right leg last year. He says he has nothing to worry about because he didn't do anything wrong. Kelvim Escobar - #45 - Pitcher - 6'1" - 230lbs

News: Manager Jerry Manuel doubts Escobar will be able to contribute early in the season due to his shoulder weakness, Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News reports. "I don't see it right now," Manuel said. "Hopefully I'm wrong."
Impact: Escobar still isn't throwing in camp and his absence makes it that much more important that Ryota Igarashi steps up and can handle the eighth-inning role as a bridge to Francisco Rodriguez. Kiko Calero - #40 - Pitcher - 6'1" - 210lbs

News: The Mets have interest in Calero on a minor-league deal, but not a big-league deal that he wants, because of injury concerns, Newsday's Ken Davidoff reports.
Impact: The Mets may need another reliever with Kelvim Escobar not being ready until the season starts, and his injury has to make his availability in general in doubt. Calero posted a 1.95 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 60 innings for the Marlins last season, but his past injury history may force him to be satisfied with a minor league deal plus incentives if he makes the majors. Jose Reyes - #7 - Short Stop - 6'1" - 200lbs

News: Reyes said Sunday morning that he spoke to the FBI three days ago about his association with Dr. Anthony Galea, who is under federal investigation for allegedly distributing performance-enhancing drugs to professional athletes, NY Newsday reports. "They asked me if he injected me [with HGH]," Reyes said. "I said no."
Impact: Reyes did say that he worked with Galea for platelet-rich plasma treatment to help in the healing of his torn hamstring tendon last season, but that was the extent of his involvement. Reyes said he spoke to the FBI agents for about 45 minutes about his work with Galea and how he knew about him. Hopefully, this is all it is and the end of the questioning. For now, this appears to be the case and it should not impact Reyes' preparation for the season and return from surgery. |
