INSIDE PITCH Ivan Nova continued to be victimized by the long ball Friday night, but he made the pitches when he needed to, beating the A's, 6-3, at the O.co Coliseum.
Nova gave up three runs over seven strong innings, two of them on solo homers by Josh Reddick and Kila Ka'aihue. Nova has now allowed 12 home runs in nine starts, the most on the staff. "I'm still getting home runs, still making mistakes," Nova said. "But you know, one thing, I have to forget about that today. We win, and I've got to enjoy the win and keep working hard and try to do better next time." Nova wasn't in much trouble during his outing Friday, working out of a second-and-third, no-out jam in the fifth while allowing only one run. Aside from that, he didn't allow a runner to get past first base, the only damage coming on the two solo shots. "Leaving the ball up and making the same mistake, throwing the wrong pitch at the wrong time and the hitters are getting really comfortable," Nova said. "It's something I've got to keep working on, and hopefully it stops right there." Nova had given up five runs or more in four of his previous five starts, so the final line was a good sign for the Yankees. The fact that Nova wasn't hampered by a minor hamstring issue was also welcome news for the Yankees. "He's won a lot of games for us the last two years and we want to get him on a roll," manager Joe Girardi said. "We think it's important for him to get on a roll the way he was last year. It was a good start for him tonight." |

NOTES, QUOTES --RF Nick Swisher snapped a 63 at-bat homerless streak with a two-run shot in the fifth inning Friday, hitting his eighth of the season. Swisher, who has seven homers in his last 10 games against the A's, finished the night 2-for-4 with the homer and a double.
--RHP David Robertson reported no pain after throwing on flat ground for the first time Thursday, but manager Joe Girardi said the pitcher still had "some stiffness" around his strained left oblique. Robertson, who is rehabbing in Tampa, is scheduled to throw again Monday. He's not expected to rejoin the Yankees until the end of their nine-game road trip. --2B Robinson Cano hit his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth inning against the A's. It was Cano's 150th career home run. Cano is hitting .337 (28-for-83) with five home runs and 15 RBI in his last 22 games. --1B Mark Teixeira hit his sixth home run of the season, belting a two-run home run in the third inning Friday against the A's. Teixeira has hit five of his six homers this season on the road. --C Russell Martin has struggled to get his bat going this season, but despite his .177 average, manager Joe Girardi has been impressed by Martin's .327 on-base percentage. "Russell's run into some bad luck," Girardi said. "When you look at his average and then you look at how much he's been on, it's really pretty incredible. If he was hitting normal, he'd probably have an on-base percentage over .400, but I've seen some good signs from him. He's hit some balls harder, and we know he's capable of doing more." BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- SS Derek Jeter struck out three times on Friday, his first three-K game since May 17, 2011, against Tampa Bay. Jeter had struck out only three times in his previous eight games. QUOTE TO NOTE: "Man, I always think I'm faster than I am." -- 1B Mark Teixeira, who was thrown out at third after trying to stretch a double into a triple in the fifth inning Friday night.67 |
