News: Cespedes (hand) will head to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday to begin his rehab assignment, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact: Everything reportedly went well during Cespedes' batting practice session Sunday, so off he goes on what is believed to be a short rehab assignment. The 26-year-old hit five homers and drove in 21 runs in the first 28 games of the season, but he's now missed 19 straight games with the injury. Still, his return appears to be around the corner.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Godfrey was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, the Athletics' official Twitter page reports.
Impact: The 27-year-old went 0-4 as a starter this season before being used in relief Saturday. Reliever Andrew Carignan was summoned to take Godfrey's spot on the 25-man roster, but it looks like Travis Blackley will take Godfrey's vacated turn in the rotation (Monday against the Twins).
Sun. May 27, 2012 | STATS
News: Inge has landed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin.
Impact: Inge is hitting .227 in 11 games.
Sun. May 27, 2012 | STATS
News: The Oakland Athletics have recalled Andrew Carignan from Triple-A Sacramento and optioned Godfrey back to the River Cats.
Impact: Godfrey was recalled May 22 for his second stint with the A's. He started and lost that day against the Los Angeles Angels, allowing four runs in 3.0 innings. He allowed three runs on five hits in two innings of relief Saturday against New York. Godfrey is 0-4 with a 6.43 ERA in five games with Oakland.
Sun. May 27, 2012 | STATS
News: The Oakland Athletics have recalled Carignan from Triple-A Sacramento and optioned right-hander Graham Godfrey back to the River Cats.
Impact: Carignan joins the A's for the third time this year. He is 1-1 with a 7.11 ERA in seven relief appearances.
Sun. May 27, 2012 | STATS
News: Cowgill had three hits Saturday in a 9-2 loss to the Yankees.
Impact: Cowgill was 5 for 39 this season heading into the game.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Carignan was recalled Sunday, the Athletics' official Twitter page reports.
Impact: Graham Godfrey was optioned to Triple-A after another rough outing Saturday night, so Carignan gets the call to replace him in the bullpen. The right-handed Carignan has allowed five run over 6.1 innings of relief on the year, and allowed twice as many walks (8) than he recorded strikeouts (4). Still, he'll likely get some chances to improve those numbers in the near future.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Ka'aihue will be the DH and bat fifth against the Yankees on Sunday, the Athletics' official Twitter page reports.
Impact: Ka'aihue has now been in the lineup for four of the team's last six games, but he's just 2-for-14 over the past week.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Barton is in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees, the Athletics' official Twitter page reports.
Impact: Barton was out of Saturday's lineup, but he's back at first base Sunday and will look to improve his .210 average on the season against right-hander Hiroki Kuroda.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Smith is back in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees, the Athletics' official Twitter page reports.
Impact: Smith will bat cleanup for the fourth time in the last seven games, and he's 8-for-19 in his career against right-hander Hiroki Kuroda, who will be on the mound for the Yankees.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Gomes is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees, the Athletics' official Twitter page reports.
Impact: Gomes has now been absent from the lineup four times in the last seven games, and Kila Ka'aihue will DH and bat fifth against right-hander Hiroki Kuroda on Sunday. Gomes is 0-for-6 lifetime against Kuroda, so it makes sense that he'd take a seat against him.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Reddick was 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a 9-2 loss to the Yankees on Saturday.
Impact: Another day, another home run for Reddick. He has now hit seven home runs in his last 13 games, but has only 12 RBI in that same period because six of the home runs were solo shots. With Manny Ramirez and Yoenis Cespedes coming back soon, that could lead to more RBI opportunities and remove that weight off Reddick's back.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Inge (groin) collected five hits, including two homers, while driving in seven in Saturday's game at Triple-A Sacramento.
Impact: Inge is set to come off the DL when eligible Monday, and it appears that his timing at the plate hasn't suffered despite the two-week absence.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Cowgill went 3-for-4 in a loss to the Yankees on Saturday.
Impact: Cowgill's good performance only raised his average to .186 for the year. He is not an option even in deeper leagues, especially with Yoenis Cespedes and Manny Ramirez coming back soon.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Reddick was 1-for-4 with his 12th home run Friday in a 6-3 loss to the Yankees.
Impact: Reddick continues to show consistent power this year with 12 homers and 25 RBI. For a guy that wasn't drafted in most leagues, he is having a great season. Reddick might turn out to be the best fantasy free-agent pick-up of the year, or just a guy with a hot start that fades away. However, he's giving no reason to believe he is going away at this point.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Godfrey (finger), who was expected to start Monday, made a two-inning relief appearance Saturday. The start with now go to Travis Blackley instead.
Impact: Godfrey was a two-start candidate for next week but figures to spend the early part of the week in long relief before possibly returning to the rotation for a start next Sunday.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Blackley will make a spot start Monday, MLB.com reports.
Impact: Blackley was claimed off waivers from the Giants in May. He hasn't made a start in the majors since 2007. Blackley has been used in long relief this season, but it's unlikely he'll go far enough in Monday's game to get a decision. He also is unlikely to get another turn in the rotation, making him only a one-start pitcher this week.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Colon allowed six runs (all earned) over six innings and was the losing pitcher Saturday against the Yankees.
Impact: He gave up nine hits while walking none and striking out three. Damage was done against Colon throughout most of his start, but three of the six runs he allowed came in the fifth inning. He has done a nice job of limiting his walks this season, with just 10 allowed in 2012. However, Colon has been hammered for a lot of hits lately, giving up 44 over his past five starts. The loss drops his record to 4-5 on the season to accompany a 4.52 ERA.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Cespedes said his injured hand felt fine during Saturday' batting practice session, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact: Though Cespedes felt good Saturday, he will take batting practice again Sunday before heading out on a short rehab assignment. Cespedes believes that he only needs 4-6 minor league at-bats before he'll be ready for major league duty again, but with the A's playing a day game Wednesday before a team off day Thursday, don't be surprised if Cespedes' return occurs Friday.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Ross allowed six runs (three earned) off 11 hits and two walks while striking out three against the Yankees on Friday.
Impact: The error charged to Coco Crisp made the pitching line look better, but this was not a good outing for Ross. The Yankees knocked him all around the park, including three home runs, and he saw his ERA climb to 5.79 after the dust had settled. A matchup against the Twins next week might be the best way for Ross to get over Friday's performance.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Crisp was 0-for-4 with a costly error that allowed in three unearned runs Friday in a 6-3 loss to the Yankees.
Impact: Crisp is 1-for-17 since his return from the disabled list. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Crisp said, "It's definitely a grind. Mentally more than physically. All I can do is give 100 percent and turn the corner." Crisp is only hitting .167 for the year.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Godfrey (finger) threw a bullpen session Saturday without issue, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact: Godfrey complained of finger pain in his last start, but he was able to throw all his pitches Saturday and should make his next start Monday against the Twins, unless he is needed out of the bullpen this weekend.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Barton is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Yankees, according to the A's official Twitter page.
Impact: With left-hander CC Sabathia on the mound for the Yankees, Barton will take a seat in favor of Adam Rosales, who will make his first start at first base this season.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: A's manager Bob Melvin wasn't sure Godfrey (finger) would be able to start Monday as scheduled, the team's web site reports.
Impact: Godfrey was roughed up by the Angels in his first start as the rotation replacement for Brandon McCarthy.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: McCarthy (shoulder) threw from flat ground for the first time since being sidelined, the team's web site reports.
Impact: McCarthy is eligible in return in a little over a week, though that seems optimistic at this point.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Cespedes (hand) now isn't expected back until next weekend as the A's would like him to go on a brief rehab assignment beginning Monday, the team's web site reports.
Impact: Earlier reports had Cespedes joining the A's lineup Monday but those plans appear to have been put on hold.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Inge (groin) began a two-game rehab stint at Triple-A Sacramento on Friday and remains on track to return from the DL when first eligible Monday, the team's web site reports.
Impact: Inge was red hot at the plate prior to getting injured, though one can expect some rust upon his initial return to the lineup.
Fri. May 25, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Gomes is not in the starting lineup Friday against the Yankees.
Impact: Gomes is 1-for-11 over his last four games, so he'll get a chance to contribute off the bench Friday.
Fri. May 25, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Cespedes (hand) took part in a limited batting practice Friday, the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Lusser reports.
Impact: Cespedes will go through a full batting practice Saturday and expects to return to the lineup Monday. He said he believes that he could play this weekend, but doesn't think that the team would let him. We'll see how his hand responds after a full round of batting practice, but it looks like he'll be back soon.
Fri. May 25, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Barton is back in the lineup for Friday's game against the Yankees, MLB.com's Jane Lee reports.
Impact: Barton got a day off Wednesday, but he will be back at first base Friday night. Barton has 19 hits - six for extra bases - and 19 walks this season, which leaves him with a rather intriguing slash line of .198/.336/.281.
Thu. May 24, 2012 | STATS
News: Cespedes has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hand that has bothered the Oakland Athletics center fielder all week.
Impact: Cespedes complained of discomfort in his hand after taking batting practice Saturday and was scratched from the lineup shortly before the A's faced the Detroit Tigers. About an hour earlier in the clubhouse, Cespedes declared himself "100 percent" healthy and ready to return after missing the four previous games. He is eligible to come off the disabled list May 22. Cespedes signed a $36 million, four-year deal this spring after defecting from Cuba.
Thu. May 24, 2012 | STATS
News: Parker had another strong start against the Angels, but didn't earn a decision in the extra-innings loss.
Impact: Parker gave up one run and five hits in seven innings. He's winless the last three games, but has now held opponents to two or fewer runs in five of his six starts this year, but has received more than two runs of support just once.
Thu. May 24, 2012 | RotoWire
News: According to San Francisco Chronicle, Cespedes will have a new grip on the bat when he returns from the disabled list.
Impact: Cespedes has always held the bat with the knob in his palm, and there is thought that that could have contributed to the strained hand muscle that landed him on the DL. Manager Bob Melvin stated that the training staff had concerns about hamate-bone injuries. The Giants' Pablo Sandoval, a switch-hitter who also holds the knob of the bat in his palm, has broken both of his hamate bones. "It's not like Cespedes has an easy swing; he swings the bat hard," Melvin said. "This is proactive." This will be a change to how Cespedes has always held the bat and it may take some getting used to, but don't hold him out of your lineup when he returns because of this.
Thu. May 24, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Inge (groin) participated in running drills Wednesday, but said that he will need to be "completely healed" before returning to the lineup, the team's website reports.
Impact: "I'm hopeful for Monday, but I don't want to push it too hard," Inge said. "I want to make sure that this thing is completely healed. I want to give myself a very good chance of being able to go 100 percent when I get back. I think it's the smart and only fair thing to do. In the grand scheme of things, coming back a couple of days early and then pulling a muscle and missing 30 days, it's not worth it. It just doesn't seem responsible."
Wed. May 23, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Barton is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Angels, ESPN.com reports.
Impact: Barton has shown little with the bat this season despite a high walk rate, as he's recorded just one home run at first base, one of baseball's premium power positions. Kila Ka'aihue gets the start at first while Jonny Gomes serves as DH.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Parker dueled the Angels' Jered Weaver to a standstill over seven innings Wednesday in an eventual extra-inning loss. He struck out eight and allowed just five hits, a walk and one run.
Impact: This was by far Parker's best game in the bigs so far, and it's that much more impressive coming off a disastrous outing against the Giants last week. Parker's been walking too many batters, so it's good to see him limit the free passes to just one in this start.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | STATS
News: Ramirez might not be ready to play for the Oakland Athletics by May 30 when his suspension ends.
Impact: Manager Bob Melvin says the A's want to make sure Ramirez is fully prepared and comfortable with his swing before he plays in major league games following his stint with Triple-A Sacramento. Melvin still hopes that could be on time. Ramirez turns 40 on May 30, the day he could come back in Minnesota. His 100-game suspension for a second positive drug test was cut to 50 games after he sat out most of last year.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Godfrey (finger) was told he should be OK to make his next scheduled start, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact: It's uncertain if the A's are leaving him in the rotation for another start, but health-wise, Godfrey should be fine after a rough outing against the Angels on Tuesday night.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Smith was 0-for-4 in a 5-0 loss to the Angels on Tuesday night.
Impact: Smith has not been swinging a bad bat lately, he was riding a four-game hitting streak coming into the game. The Angels C.J. Wilson only allowed one hit against the A's on Tuesday, so Smith wasn't the only one hitless. That said, Smith's playing time could soon decline with Coco Crisp back from injury and Yoenis Cespedes potentially returning this weekend. Further, Manny Ramirez is eligible to return from suspension May 30 and will likely take over DH duties.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Gomes was 0-for-3 Tuesday night in a 5-0 lose to the Angels.
Impact: Gomes has been recieving more playing time than expected with the injuries to Yoenis Cepedes and Coco Crisp. Gomes has not taken advantage of his time, in the last 15 days he is hitting .189 with four runs and three RBI. With Crisp back now, Cespedes hopefully coming back this weekend and Manny Ramiriez eligible to play on May 30th Gomes's at bats are sure to go down.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Pennington was 1-for-3, collecting the only hit for the A's in a 5-0 loss to the Angels on Tuesday night.
Impact: Pennington hit a single to center in the fifth inning with one out and was part of a double play with the next batter. The A's could not handle C.J. Wilson who only allowed three baserunners in eight innings.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Godfrey pitched just three innings allowing six hits, three walks and four runs Tuesday night against the Angels. He was also credited with the loss.
Impact: Godfrey's first start back in the majors was a forgettable one, and finger pain main have been the reason. According to the Bay Area Comcast Sports Network Godfrey noticed finger pain when warming up for the game. "It has the sensation that it is jammed right now," Godfrey said. "It's disappointing, it's frustrating, things were going so well." Godfrey was pitching well in the minors, and hopes to get another shot soon.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Cespedes (hand) hopes to begin swinging a bat Wednesday, the team's web site reports.
Impact: We'll have a better idea on a possible return date after he goes through a round or two of batting practice. A return at some point this weekend hasn't yet been ruled out.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | STATS
News: The Oakland Athletics have called up pitcher Graham Godfrey from Triple-A Sacramento to start Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Angels.
Impact: Godfrey opened the season as Oakland's No. 4 starter but was optioned down after losing each of his three outings. The right-hander went 3-0 with a 1.21 ERA in five starts for Sacramento.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Suzuki is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Angels, according to the A's official Twitter page.
Impact: Anthony Recker will get the start at catcher in place of Suzuki, who is presumably getting a routine day off Tuesday.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Crisp, who returned to the A's lineup Monday from an inner ear infection, is in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Angels.
Impact: It's expected that Crisp will be eased back into the starting lineup, so you should probably expect a day off - maybe even moreso - in the coming days. The A's find themselves in the division hunt, however, so perhaps there's a little extra incentive for them to start Crisp on back-to-back days against a division opponent.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | STATS
News: Reddick had two hits, helping the pesky A's past the Angels 2-1 on Monday night.
Impact: Reddick snapped out of a 1-for-11 slump.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | STATS
News: Milone scattered five hits over seven innings, leading the pesky A's past the Angels 2-1 on Monday night.
Impact: Milone struck out three, walked one and never allowed the anemic Angels offense to get going for his sixth win.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Weeks is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Angels, according to the A's official Twitter page.
Impact: Weeks, who is just 2-for-18 over his last five games, will get the night off in favor of Adam Rosales.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Reddick is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Angels, according to the A's official Twitter page.
Impact: Reddick is coming off a 2-for-3 game Monday, but since he has not had a day off this month, and left-hander C.J. Wilson is on the mound for the Angels, he will get a day off Tuesday. Expect Reddick to be back in the lineup Wednesday.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Godfrey was officially recalled by the Athletics on Tuesday, reports the team's official twitter page.
Impact: No surprise here as Godfrey already confirmed he would start Tuesday in place of the injured Brandon McCarthy. Godfrey made three starts earlier in the year for Oakland and had a 5.06 ERA. Since being sent down, he made five starts and had a 1.21 ERA in Triple-A. Pedro Figueroa was optioned to open a roster spot.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Cook pitched a perfect eighth inning Monday, collecting his 10th hold of the season in a 2-1 victory against the Angels.
Impact: Cook has now run his consecutive scoreless inning streak to 21.2. He broke an A's record set back in 1918. Cook stated that he wasn't concerned with all of that kind of stuff - he just hopes to make pitches in the zone and have good results, according to Bay Area Comcast Sports Network. So far the results couldn't get much better.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Fuentes pitched a perfect ninth inning in collecting his fourth save of the year Monday.
Impact: Fuentes has been solid as a closer so far. There is little doubt he has the experience to do the job with 203 career saves, but it has been a couple of years since he has been the primary option. Grant Balfour (the closer at the beginning of the year) and Ryan Cook (21.2 consective scoreless innings) are waiting in the wings if he were to lose his touch.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Milone pitched seven solid innings Monday against the Angels. He only allowed six baserunners and one run while striking out three in a 2-1 victory.
Impact: Milone has a decision in all nine starts this year and boasts a record of 6-3 with a 4-0 home record. Milone stated in the San Francisco Chronicle that "I have a tremendous amount of confidence here, there's a lot of foul territory, and I'm not afraid to pitch to contact." He has pitched 30 innings in four starts at home, allowing only two runs and 21 baserunners.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Reddick was 2-for-3 with a stolen base in a 2-1 victory over the Angels on Monday.
Impact: Reddick is leading the A's in batting average, runs, RBI and home runs. He is also showcasing some speed, having stole five bases already this year. This has been a solid season for Reddick, who is getting the opportunity to play every day for the first time. Don't expect the stolen bases to continue though, as he only had two stolen bases in the bigs before this year and only 35 in 466 minor league games.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Crisp, who returned to the A's lineup Monday, will be eased back into the starting lineup on a regular basis according to the team's web site.
Impact: Those in daily lineups can reasonably expect Crisp to get the day off Tuesday, though checking back as game time approaches would be wise. Colin Cowgill figures to pick up starts in center field when Crisp is absent from the starting lineup.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Cespedes (hand) has been ruled out from returning until Friday at the earliest, the team's web site reports.
Impact: Our last several updates on Cespedes mentioned this as the likely best-case scenario so hopefully those in weekly leagues weren't caught off guard here. He's yet to be cleared to swing a bat, however, and will need to do so soon if he wants to return this weekend.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | STATS
News: Crisp has been activated from the disabled list.
Impact: Crisp, batting .194 with five RBIs heading into Monday night, was placed on the 15-day DL on May 3 with an inner-ear infection.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Inge (groin) will swing a bat and take grounders Monday, Joe Stiglich of the Contra Costa Times reports.
Impact: Manager Bob Melvin is optimistic that Inge will be able to return to the A's lineup when he's first eligible to do so May 28.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | STATS
News: Pennington had two hits in Sunday's 6-2 win over the Giants.
Impact: Pennington has now hit safely in five of six games.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | STATS
News: Suzuki had two hits in Sunday's 6-2 win over the Giants.
Impact: Suzuki has multihit efforts in three of his last six games.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | STATS
News: Colon struck out seven and walked two in five innings to earn Sunday's 6-2 win over the Giants.
Impact: Colon allowed two runs and six hits and wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth with a pair of strikeouts, also hitting a batter. His record is now 4-4.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Godfrey was in the A's clubhouse Monday night and he confirmed that he will start in place of Brandon McCarthy on Tuesday, the Contra Costa Times' Joe Stiglich reports.
Impact: His first three starts in Oakland did little to suggest that long-term success will come from a starting role in the big leagues, but Godfrey will take the ball at home against the Angels on Tuesday night for those in leagues where starting pitching options are difficult to come by.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Sogard has been optioned to Triple-A to make room for Coco Crisp, reports the Athletics official twitter page.
Impact: Crisp has been reinstated from the 15-day DL after recovering from an inner ear infection. Sogard has been awful for Oakland this season, with just a .136 batting average.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Crisp (inner ear infection) was reinstated off the disabled list on Monday, reports the Athletics official twitter page.
Impact: The A's are batting Crisp second Monday night. Crisp had been hitting a meager .194/.260/.209 while starting in left field before going down with the injury. He figures to continue starting, especially with Yoenis Cespedes still on the DL. Eric Sogard has been optioned to Triple-A to make room on the roster.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Suzuki was 2-for-4 with an RBI in Sunday's victory against the Giants.
Impact: Suzuki doesn't appear that he is going to rebound from his worst professional career in 2011 where he had career lows in runs scored and batting average. He is only hitting .233 this year with six runs scored and 13 RBI in 36 games played.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Pennington went 2-for-5 with one run scored on Sunday in a victory against the Giants.
Impact: Pennington needs a couple of more games like this one to get his batting average back to his .256 career average. The rest of his stats are falling right into line with his average year, with exception to being off the pace in the RBI category, as he only has eight this year. Pennington can be a viable fantasy option for a couple of weeks, but he isn't someone you want in there every day.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Inge (groin) has yet to resume baseball-related activities, the team's web site reports.
Impact: He's eligible to return May 28, so we should have a better idea on his exact return date as the week progresses.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Cespedes (hand) likely won't come off the DL Tuesday when first eligible as he has yet to be cleared to swing a bat, the team's web site reports.
Impact: A return following an off day Thursday seems to be the best case scenario at this point, and even that may be overly optimistic.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Godfrey is believed to be the leading candidate to take Brandon McCarthy's rotation spot, the team's web site reports.
Impact: Godfrey figures to have nominal value at best unless the injury to McCarthy lingers.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: McCarthy (shoulder strain) underwent an MRI two weeks ago that showed no structural problems, so it's hoped that a brief rest period will return him to health, according to the team's web site reports.
Impact: McCarthy will stop throwing for a few days in an effort to get some strength back in his shoulder. His long injury history makes banking on a two-week return risky at best, despite the initial optimism about his prognosis.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Reddick crushed his 11th home run of the season Sunday, finishing 1-for-4 with two RBI in Oakland's win at San Francisco.
Impact: Reddick is currently slumping a bit, going 3-for-21 in his last six tilts. However, two of those three hits left the park as he looks to build on his career year, which includes a slugging percentage (.534) ranked in the top-30 across MLB.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Cowgill went 1-for-4 with one run and his first two RBI of the season as Oakland ended an 11-game losing streak in San Francisco.
Impact: Cowgill drove in the go-ahead runs Sunday in the fourth inning on his only hit of the day, a single. He later sprinted home on a wild pitch by the Giants' Tim Lincecum and scored when Lincecum couldn't hold onto the ball. Cowgill isn't worth a look in standard mixed leagues, though, due to his .143/.231/.143 line on the season and his limited playing time.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Colon allowed two runs over five innings Sunday, striking out a season-high seven while yielding six hits and two walks during Oakland's win at San Francisco. He improved to 4-4 this season.
Impact: To get through his outing relatively unscathed, Colon had to endure a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning, firing two strikeouts to end the frame. Since tallying quality starts in five of his first six nods this season, he has failed to do so in each of the last four as his ERA settled at 4.09 - right in line with his FIP of 3.96 in 2012.

News: Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Sunday that there's a "decent" chance Crisp (inner ear infection) will come off the disabled list Monday, Joe Stiglich of the Bay Area News Group reports.
Impact: Crisp reportedly doesn't feel he needs a rehab assignment, but Melvin seems uncertain about Crisp's ability to return Monday. As of now, it looks like Crisp may be able to return early this week, but nothing is set in stone.

News: The A's recalled right-hander Jim Miller from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday to take injured Brandon McCarthy's place on the roster.

News: The Oakland Athletics have placed right-hander Brandon McCarthy on the 15-day disabled list with a sore shoulder in the latest injury setback to the franchise's opening day starter. The A's recalled right-hander Jim Miller from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday to take McCarthy's place. The move is retroactive to Friday.
Impact: Oakland skipped McCarthy in the rotation earlier this month to give his shoulder some rest. He returned to throw seven scoreless innings in a victory over Detroit and lasted 5 1-3 to help Oakland win in his last start at Texas. McCarthy is 3-3 with a 2.95 ERA in nine starts this season.

News: Ross pitched six innings, allowing seven hits, four walks and two runs while striking out four in a loss to the Giants on Saturday.
Impact: Ross has been pitching better of late, but still took the loss Saturday. He wasn't able to compete with Ryan Vogelsong, who pitched a one-hitter through seven innings. While Ross continues to improve his ERA, his WHIP is still 1.70 and he has only struck out 19 in 37.2 innings.

News: Cowgill is back in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants, the Athletics' official Twitter page reports.
Impact: Cowgill had been in the lineup every day since being recalled May 11. He's just 4-for-31 on the year and isn't worthy of much fantasy consideration in any format.
May 20, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Gomes is not in Sunday's starting lineup, the Athletics' official Twitter page reports.
Impact: Gomes was in left field and batted cleanup in the team's last three games, but Seth Smith will be there Sunday to take on right-hander Tim Lincecum and the Giants.
May 20, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Miller was called up by the A's on Sunday.
Impact: The move was made following the placement of Brandon McCarthy on the 15-day DL with a right shoulder strain. Miller could be in line for another short stay in Oakland, as it's possible that he'll be headed back to Triple-A when the A's need a starter in the middle of the upcoming week.
May 20, 2012 | RotoWire
News: McCarthy has been placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to May 18 with a right shoulder strain.
Impact: While the retroactive nature of the move is a slight positive, the fact that the shoulder was bugging McCarthy before his last two starts and this will now be his seventh career stint on the disabled list is not. We'll await further details, but his history of arm issues makes this news troubling.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Gomes will start for the third consecutive game on Saturday and bat cleanup, Joe Stiglich of the Bay Area News Group reports.
Impact: In an effort to get their best batters into the lineup, Gomes starts in left field while Colin Cowgill is the odd man out. Gomes may start in all interleague games in NL parks, as his power and on-base skills have endeared him to the manager Bob Melvin.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Cowgill is not in the lineup Saturday against the Giants, the Joe Stiglich of the Bay Area News Group reports.
Impact: In an effort to get their best batters into the lineup, Josh Reddick fills in for Cowgill in center field while Jonny Gomes starts in left field for the third straight game.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Crisp (inner ear infection) will not come off the disabled list until at least Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact: Manager Bob Melvin said Crisp will go through a full batting practice Sunday, after which the team will design a more complete plan. Crisp may need a brief rehab stint in the minors, but that will be determined Sunday.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Cespedes (hand) won't be cleared to swing a bat until Monday at the earliest, the team's web site reports.
Impact: He's eligible to return from the DL on Tuesday but will almost certainly not be ready that quickly. Those in weekly leagues should plan on a Cespedes return for the weekend series against the Yankees in a best case scenario and plan accordingly.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: The A's have encouraged Barton to be more aggressive at the plate recently with promising results, the team's web site reports.
Impact: Barton entered Saturday's game with five hits in his past 13 at-bats, and at the very least has taken advantage of Kila Ka'aihue's brief hamstring issues.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Anderson (elbow) has been shut down for a few days with forearm tightness, Joe Stiglich of the Contra Costa Times reports.
Impact: Manager Bob Melvin didn't express concern over Anderson's temporary setback, as he remains ahead of his recovery timetable from Tommy John surgery. This is the first snag in Anderson's recovery process, but he remains on track to return to the rotation in early to mid-July.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Ka'aihue is out of the lineup again Saturday as the A's play at San Francisco.
Impact: With no DH for the interleague series, Ka'aihue doesn't have a spot. Daric Barton had two hits Friday and will start again at first base Saturday.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Cespedes (hand) still hasn't been cleared to swing a bat, the team's web site reports.
Impact: He was scheduled to visit with a doctor late Friday, presumably as a progress check in, but it's looking unlikely that he'll come off the DL when first eligible Tuesday.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Crisp (inner ear infection) will take batting practice again prior to Saturday's game with a possible return to the A's lineup as soon as Sunday a possibility, the team's web site reports.
Impact: The report goes on to state that the A's will evaluate Crisp's progress following Saturday's pregame activities, though the recent solid play of Colin Cowgill won't force the A's to activate Crisp prior to a rehab assignment if they decide he would benefit from one.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Barton went 2-for-4 with two runs scored Friday night against the Giants.
Impact: Barton is riding a mini streak lately and he needs it. He has a four game hitting streak and is 5-for-11 in that span, but has only produced two runs scored. He was able to raise his average from .185 to .216 for the year and is hitting .256 for the month.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Donaldson went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and five RBI against the Giants on Friday.
Impact: Since being called back up from the minors, Donaldson had been stuck in a 1-for-17 slump. But with Brandon Inge hurt, manager Bob Melvin opted to stick with the youngster at third and hoped for the best. He did not disappoint. Expect Donaldson to get the majority of the work at third until Inge returns.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Parker took his second loss of the season after giving up six runs off four hits and four walks with no strikeouts against the Giants on Friday.
Impact: This was Parker's shortest outing of the season and second consecutive poor start. After beginning the season so strongly, some regression was to be expected. He'll have another tough match-up his next time out when the A's take on Albert Pujols and the Angels next week.

News: Ka'aihue is not in the lineup for Friday's game against San Francisco, the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports.

Fri. May 18, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Crisp (inner ear infection) expects to take batting practice prior to Friday's game, the team's web site reports.

News: Reddick was 2-for-5 and hit his 10th long ball Thursday against the Rangers.
Impact: Reddick hit a long home run in the seventh to tie the game. The 10 homers are a career high for Reddick, who's yet to play more than 87 games in a season. Keep him in your line up for now until he proves he is no longer worthy.
Thu. May 17, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Gomes was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI Thursday against the Rangers.
Impact: With this nice performance Gomes has raised his average to .253 with five home runs in limited action. With Yoenis Cespedes and Manny Ramirez factoring into the mix soon, Gomes may find his action to be even more limited.
Thu. May 17, 2012 | RotoWire
News: McCarthy pitched 5.1 innings Thursday against the Rangers, allowing four runs, eight hits and three walks while striking out four in an eventual extra-inning win.
Impact: This was one of McCarthy's worse starts this year, but he still has an ERA south of three for the season. He is backing up a solid year last year with a good start to 2012. Consider this start just a bump in the road and nothing to worry about yet, although McCarthy's WHIP (1.34) suggests there's some correction coming to his ERA.
Thu. May 17, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Cook pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning Thursday against the Rangers. He issued two walks and struck out one while picking up his first professional win.
Impact: If the A's want to win, they need to just let Cook pitch. The last 15 times he has appeared in a game, they have won. He has pitched 19.2 innings, allowing four hits and no runs while striking out 18, walking 10 and compiling nine holds and a win. Every year, there are a couple of setup men who come out of nowhere; maybe this is Cook's year.

News: Barton is not in the lineup Thursday against the Rangers, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact: The freshly recalled Adam Rosales will instead make the start at first in what amounts to a day off for Barton. He might need it; he's batting just .193 on the year with a meager .316 on-base percentage.
Thu. May 17, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Rosales will start at first base on Thursday and bat eighth, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact: Rosales, who was called up earlier in the day to replace Brandon Inge on the active roster, isn't expected to play every day, but instead serve as a backup utility infielder. Rosales's start at first means this is likely an off day for Daric Barton.
Thu. May 17, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Rosales was recalled by the A's on Thursday.
Impact: With Brandon Inge (groin) going on the DL, Rosales could be in the mix for utility work, as Josh Donaldson previously struggled when given the opportunity to serve as the A's primary third baseman.
Thu. May 17, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Inge (groin) was placed on the 15-day DL on Thursday.
Impact: The move is retroactive to May 13, so Inge will be eligible for activation May 28 if he's healthy enough to play by then. Adam Rosales was called up to provide extra infield depth for the A's in Inge's absence.
Thu. May 17, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Smith is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rangers, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Thu. May 17, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Gomes is in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rangers, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Wed. May 16, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Reddick was 0-for-3 with three strikeouts and one RBI Wednesday evening against Texas.
Impact: Reddick hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning, but then struck out the next three times up, only seeing 13 pitches. Nothing to get too concerned about yet, but keep your eye on him.
Wed. May 16, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Weeks went 2-for-3 with one run scored and a walk Wednesday against the Rangers.
Impact: Weeks collected two of the four hits that A's were able to muster against Yu Darvish. That is a couple of decent games in a row for Weeks who has been off to a slow start. He has a long way to prove he can hit over .300 again after his rookie year, but you have to start somewhere.
Wed. May 16, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Milone pitched seven innings Wednesday, allowing four runs, nine hits and one walk. He only struck out four batters and took the loss against the Rangers.
Impact: Milone has factored in the decision in all eight starts so far this year. He is 5-3 with a respectable 1.13 WHIP but with an ERA over four (4.09) and a low strikeout rate of 29 strikeouts in 50.2 innings.

News: Inge is a strong DL possibility Thursday if his groin doesn't improve, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact: Inge said that he needs to take a number of days to let his groin strain settle down as the ailment felt worse Wednesday than it did Tuesday. If he is sidelined, Josh Donaldson should continue to start at third base.
Wed. May 16, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Pennington is not in the lineup on Wednesday against the Rangers, the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports.
Impact: This appears to just be a regularly scheduled rest day, and Eric Sogard will get the start at shortstop.

Wed. May 16, 2012 | RotoWire
News: The A's have optioned Carignan to Triple-A Sacramento.
Impact: The team needed to clear a roster spot for the recently claimed Travis Blackley, and Carignan seemed like the obvious candidate after just getting recalled again Friday and carrying a 7.11 ERA with eight walks in 6.1 innings so far this season. Obviously, he has a few things to work on.

Tue. May 15, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Weeks went 1-for-4 with one stolen base Tuesday against the Angels.
Impact: Weeks hasn't been able to match his impressive rookie year batting average of .303 but the rest of the numbers are in line with what you would have been expecting if not better. His stolen bases are the most impressive - he has stole 10 bases now this year, giving him 32 in 129 major league games. This is outpacing the speed he showed in the minors. In 221 minor league games he stole a respectable 41 bases.
Tue. May 15, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Colon took the loss Tuesday against the Angels, allowing four runs over 6.2 innings.
Impact: It was a hit parade for the Angels, who managed 12 hits on the night. Colon struck out three and didn't walk any, but occasionally pitchers who give up so much contact will pay a price, and Tuesday was that night for Colon.

Tue. May 15, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Suzuki (hand) returned to the lineup Monday night, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Impact: Suzuki has missed a couple of games recently with some nagging injuries. History says he is good for 130-plus games this year and we have no reason to think that will not be the case.
Tue. May 15, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Reddick went 1-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI and a home run Monday against the Angels.
Impact: Reddick has been crushing the ball. In the last nine games he is hitting .361 with five home runs, 12 runs scored, 11 RBI and one stolen base. News: The A's will be cautious in bringing Inge (groin) back given his problems earlier this season that required a stint to the DL, the team's web site reports.
Impact: Inge isn't expected to play Tuesday, though he may be cleared to pinch hit.
Tue. May 15, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Crisp (inner ear infection) has resumed swinging a bat, the team's web site reports.

News: Manager Bob Melvin indicated that Grant Balfour could reclaim the closer role at some point, the team's web site reports.
Impact: Those that spent heavily on Fuentes with FAAB bucks this week are likely safe for several weeks, barring a poor outing or two from Fuentes, but be aware this still figures to be a volatile situation.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Balfour has a chance to reclaim the closers' role at some point according to manager Bob Melvin, the team's web site reports.
Impact: "I've been on many teams [where] you give the closer a little break and give him a chance to iron things out, and he'll have that opportunity. It's not uncommon that guys get pulled out of that role and end up reclaiming it," Melvin added. Those with deeper reserve squads will likely want to hang onto Balfour for a bit as a result.

News: Parker threw 5.2 innings Sunday, allowing six hits, four walks and two runs while striking out five. He was outdueled by Justin Verlander and took the loss.
Impact: This was the shortest outing of the year for Parker, who has never allowed more than two earned runs any of his five career starts. The ninth pick in the 2007 draft and #26 prospect per Baseball America is starting to show his potential at the big-league level. His strikeout totals are a bit low to get overly excited for fantasy purposes, but he is off to a nice start regardless.
May 13, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Donaldson was 0-for-3 Sunday in a 3-1 loss to the Tigers.
Impact: Donaldson got his first start since being sent down to the minors nearly a month ago. The results were not that different since he was held without a hit and dropped his average to .086. Inge has started 11 games in a row for the A's and it is expected he will be starting at third when he returns.
May 13, 2012 | RotoWire
