News: Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said he sees Qualls competing for a setup role this spring, CSNPhilly.com reports.
Impact: "We don't have a whole lot of depth in the eighth inning," Amaro said. "We have a guy (Jose Contreras) coming off surgery and a kid (Antonio Bastardo) coming off a great year and we're not sure how he'll react to season two of being a full-time guy in the big leagues. We like Antonio (in the eighth inning) a lot, but we also like giving ourselves some depth there." Qualls' overall numbers from last season were not great, but he finished the year with a 1.96 ERA in his final 19 appearances which caught the eye of Amaro. "We really liked his stuff at the end of the season," Amaro said. "He had some issues with one of his knees earlier, but his stuff got better as his knee felt better. We actually thought of trading for him at times the last few years. He sinks the ball well, which should be good because we catch the ball."
