News: The White Sox are among the teams interested in Henry Blanco, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Impact: The 38-year-old catcher is desirable for his defensive skills, as he has gunned down 43 percent of would-be base stealers over his career.  

News: Young (shoulder) plans to begin throwing this week, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Impact: Young hopes to be 100 percent healthy by spring training. He looks to be on track to be fine once pitchers and catchers report. 

News: It would take a knockout offer to entice the Padres to trade Adrian Gonzalez this offseason, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
Impact: Rosenthal says it would probably take major league players, and not just prospects. With Gonzalez having two extremely affordable years left on his contract, it's highly unlikely he'll be moved this winter. 

News: Blanco has filed for free agency, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Impact: Blanco will likely catch on somewhere as a second-string backstop. The Padres could look to bring him back to continue to share time with Nick Hundley (sports hernia). 

News: Giles (knee) has filed for free agency, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact: Giles may have a hard time finding a market for himself after a very disappointing 2009 campaign. 

News: Hundley underwent surgery for a sports hernia this week, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact: Hundley said he befell the injury in May, but was able to play through it this summer. He is expected to be 100 percent by spring training. 

News: Gonzalez (shoulder) was outrighted off the 40-man roster, the Associated Press reports.
Impact: He may chose to become a free agent rather than simply accept the assignment to Triple-A Portland. 

News: Young has had arthroscopic surgery on his pitching shoulder and will miss the rest of the season.
Impact: Young, out since mid-June with shoulder inflammation, had partial tears in his labrum repaired during Monday's surgery. Young was 5-6 with a 5.21 ERA. He is expected to be ready for spring training. 

News: Giles' knee remains a problem, and his chances of returning this season are slim, the North County Times reported.
Impact: Giles was hitting .191 when he went on the 15-day disabled list June 19 with a right knee contusion 

News: Worrell will undergo surgery on his pitching elbow and is expected to miss the entire season.
Impact: The Padres announced Friday that the 25-year-old Worrell is scheduled for an operation Wednesday. Worrell made his major league debut with the St. Louis Cardinals last season, going 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA (five earned runs, 5.2 innings) in four relief appearances.
