News: Fielder collected two hits Monday, one a bloop double to the opposite field, for just his second multi-hit effort in his past 10 games.
Impact: To say Fielder's production to date has been disappointing is an understatement, as he enters Tuesday's game hitting just .176/235/.263 on the season. Texas plays at home for the remainder of the week, but he'll have missed a big opportunity to take advantage of a 10-game homestand if his slump continues. He's in no danger of being moved down in the order, given Texas' lineup-wide struggles to score runs, but Adrian Beltre's absence for the next 10 days won't help any either.
Tue. Apr 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Kouzmanoff went 3-for-4 with his first home run of the season Tuesday, along with a pair of doubles, two runs and two RBI against the Mariners.
Impact: The Kouz led the Rangers in hits Tuesday, and seems to be settling into his role at third base in the absence of Adrian Beltre (quadriceps), who will be out at least until April 24.
Tue. Apr 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Ross needed just 90 pitches to go 7.2 shutout innings Tuesday, allowing five hits and no walks while striking out two against Seattle.
Impact: Ross was able to notch his first win in three tries this season, but it wasn't for a lack of strong outings. He now has a 1.00 ERA over 18 innings. The key for Ross on Tuesday was his command, as he made it past the sixth inning for the first time, while throwing his fewest pitches of the season. It doesn't seem probable that this impressive start will continue much longer, and Sunday's game against the White Sox should present a solid test.
Tue. Apr 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Fielder hit his first big fly of the season Tuesday, going 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs against the Mariners.
Impact: It had been the second longest drought to start the season of Fielder's career, but it was only a matter of time before he hit one out. Certainly those who were expecting a huge bounce-back year for Fielder, moving from Detroit to Texas, have been a bit disappointed. However, once the summer air heats up, he could start hitting them out in bunches.
Tue. Apr 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Ogando wouldn't have pitched in a save situation Monday with Joakim Soria back and available but will "get a chance to close out some games" according to manager Ron Washington, the team's web site reports.
Impact: Presumably those opportunities will be limited to when Soria has already made appearances in back-to-back games, though Washington didn't provide any more details than that.
Tue. Apr 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Soria would have been used to close out a Texas win on Monday, though manager Ron Washington also incidated that Alexi Ogando will "get a chance to close ballgames" as well, the team's web site reports.
Impact: All indications are that Soria will serve as the primary closer, only yielding to Ogando due to workload concerns, as Soria works his way back into shape.
Tue. Apr 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Harrison (back) threw 77 pitches in 3.1 innings during his rehab start Monday, the team's web site reports.
Impact: The results (six hits, three walks, three runs) weren't pretty, but health is the key right now for Harrison and all reports were positive in that respect. He's expected to make two more rehab starts before rejoining the rotation.
Mon. Apr 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Kouzmanoff knocked in the Rangers' only run Monday night with a seventh-inning single.
Impact: With Adrian Beltre banged up, Kouzmanoff has risen to the occasion, hitting safely in all five games he's appeared in. The third baseman last played in the major leagues in 2011, but should continue to get a shot for as long as Beltre is ailing.
Mon. Apr 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Noesi made his Rangers debut Monday, throwing 2.1 innings of shutout ball.
Impact: Noesi got off to a rough start with the Mariners this season, but the early returns for the Rangers look good. The reliever will be used in low-leverage situations for the time being.
Mon. Apr 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Making his season debut, Lewis did not find much success, allowing four runs -- three earned -- in 5.1 innings.
Impact: Lewis allowed eight hits in his outing, but did not walk a batter. The veteran should improve the further removed he gets from his injury. His next start will come against the White Sox this weekend.
Mon. Apr 14, 2014 | STATS
News: Perez earned his second win of the season Sunday, allowing five hits over eight shutout innings against Houston.
Impact: Perez is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in three starts.
Mon. Apr 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Darvish has downplayed the severity of the cut on his thumb and doesn't think it will present any issues for Wednesday's start against the Mariners, FOXSports.com reports.
Impact: Even with the cut, Darvish was able to strike out nine Astros batters over eight shutout innings Friday night. He sustained the cut on his thumb when he poked it with his index finger while throwing a curveball, something he's done before with little to no ill effects on the quality of his pitching.
Mon. Apr 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Saunders (ankle) was slated for a bullpen session Monday but nonetheless expects to take the mound when he's first eligible for activation from the disabled list Sunday against the White Sox, Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Impact: Saunders took a line drive to his ankle on Apr. 4, resulting in swollen ankle and his subsequent placement on the DL. At the moment, Robbie Ross is tentatively on the slate for Saunders' hope-for return to action, leaving the Rangers with a rotation shakeup to make in the near future.
Mon. Apr 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: McCutchen was designated for assignment Monday, John Blake of the Rangers' official site reports.
Impact: During McCutchen's sole major league appearance of the year, he was pegged, giving up two runs on four hits with a 2:0 K:BB in 2.1 innings. Organizational relief depth is his calling, so expect another call at some point, unless another organization takes a chance on him.
Mon. Apr 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Lewis' contract was purchased from Triple-A Round Rock, allowing him to toe the rubber Monday against the Mariners, Rangers VP of Communications John Blake reports.
Impact: Lewis' sole rehab start last Sunday, Apr. 6, was a modest success, wherein he gave up two runs on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts in five frames. He'll take on the No. 5 spot in the Rangers' rotation.
Mon. Apr 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Profar (shoulder) has yet to progress to throwing, Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Impact: Instead, Profar's typical routine of infield work, handling grounders and flipping to second, continues to rule the day. Expect his rehab through a torn muscle in his shoulder to be slow but steady, with a late May or early June return in mind.
Mon. Apr 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: The Rangers are expected to demote McCutchen to Triple-A on Monday.
Impact: McCutchen has lost the long reliever role for now to Hector Noesi, whom the Rangers just acquired from the Mariners.
Mon. Apr 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Andrus was ejected from Sunday's win over the Astros for arguing balls and strikes.
Impact: In case you were perusing the box score and saw just two plate appearances from Andrus, there was no injury. Andrus struck out in both at-bats.
Mon. Apr 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez threw eight shutout innings Sunday to beat the Astros, giving up five hits and three walks while striking out two.
Impact: It was an odd weekend for the Rangers, as they won two 1-0 games over the last three games. Perez overcame the lack of strikeouts by inducing four double plays.
Apr 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Noesi has been added to the Rangers' roster, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.
Impact: Adrian Beltre was placed on the 15-day DL, opening up a spot for the recently-acquired right-hander to join the Rangers' bullpen.
Apr 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Beltre (quad) has been placed on the 15-day DL, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.
Impact: The move is retroactive to April 9, making Beltre eligible to return April 24 if the injury subsides over the next two weeks. Hector Noesi is taking Beltre's roster spot for Sunday's game against Houston, while Kevin Kouzmanoff will continue to see extra playing time at third base while Beltre is sidelined.
Apr 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Soria was unavailable to pitch Sunday after pitching the two previous games, leaving Alexi Ogando to finish the game against the Rangers.
Impact: Soria isn't off to a great start, having given up four earned runs in his first five games. The Rangers have to be cognizant of preserving him for the extent of the season, so it's likely he'll get rested the next time he has back-to-back appearances as well.
Apr 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Ogando pitched a perfect ninth inning Sunday to get the save. He was pitching because Joakim Soria was unavailable, having pitched the last two days, MLB.com reports.
Impact: Unless Soria gets hurt or falters, Ogando isn't a threat to take over, but at least this establishes who is next in line, for now. Remember, however, that Neftali Feliz looms down in Triple-A as an option.
Sun. Apr 13, 2014 | STATS
News: Lewis is ready to rejoin the Texas Rangers rotation after 21 months and two operations, including an unprecedented hip procedure for a major league pitcher.
Impact: The right-hander is scheduled to take the mound Monday night at home for the series opener against Seattle. "I'm excited to get back, I'm excited for the opportunity to play this game, the opportunity for the Rangers to give me that chance to go out and play, and ultimately continue my career a little bit longer," Lewis said Sunday. "Like my wife said, she wasn't ready for me to be done. So it was extra motivation to get back out there."
Sun. Apr 13, 2014 | STATS
News: Scheppers allowed five runs in six innings with seven strikeouts. Every run he gave up was in the fourth.
Impact: Scheppers, making his third career start since transitioning this season from short relief, was victimized by the big inning for the second time this season. He faces the M's next time out.
Apr 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Despite lasting seven innings, Scheppers was knocked around for five earned runs on four hits -- one of which was three-run homer -- in a 6-5 loss to the Astros on Saturday. He did not earn a decision.
Impact: The third-year Ranger has struggled in his first season as a starter, allowing 21 hits, five walks and 14 earned runs in 16 innings of work. His ERA is up to 7.88, so you may want to look elsewhere for starting pitching while he figures it out - or gets sent back to the bullpen.
Apr 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Choice smacked the first home run of his career in dramatic fashion Saturday, tying the game in the bottom of the ninth as a pinch hitter to send the game into extra innings against Houston.
Impact: Unfortunately, the Rangers' offseason acquisition has been stapled to the bench in five of the last six games -- including this one until the ninth -- so until he sees some regular playing time, he shouldn't crack too many fantasy rosters.
Apr 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Lewis is now on track to start Monday for the Rangers if Sunday's game isn't rained out, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.
Impact: If everything goes as planned Sunday, Lewis will be followed against the Mariners by Robbie Ross on Tuesday and Yu Darvish on Wednesday, but rain could shake up the order of the Rangers' rotation.
Sat. Apr 12, 2014 | STATS
News: The Texas Rangers have acquired right-hander Hector Noesi from the Seattle Mariners for a player to be named or cash.
Impact: Noesi was designated for assignment by Seattle on April 4 after two relief appearances during the first week of the season. He was 0-1 while allowing three runs in one inning of work. He has a 4-16 career record with a 5.64 ERA in 66 games (21 starts) for the New York Yankees (2011) and Seattle (2012-14).
Sat. Apr 12, 2014 | STATS
News: Darvish struck out nine while yielding one hit in eight shutout innings in Friday's win over Houston.
Impact: Darvish has thrown 15 shutout innings in two starts, though he's only been staked with two runs of support.
Sat. Apr 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: GM Jon Daniels said Saturday that the Rangers are leaning toward placing Beltre (quadriceps) on the DL, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Impact: The team indicated earlier in the week that they had no immediate plans to place Beltre on the disabled list, but Daniels is now leaning the other way. It may be wise to just give Beltre the 15 days and hope he's ready for the long haul when he returns, rather than allow him to play and risk letting the quad issue linger.
Sat. Apr 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Beltre (quadriceps) remains out of the lineup Saturday against the Astros.
Impact: Beltre will miss a third straight start with the quad injury and again be replaced at third base by Kevin Kouzmanoff. A Thursday report indicated that the Rangers had "no immediate plans" to place Beltre on the disabled list, but if the 35-year-old can't make it back by the middle of next week or so, the club may have to start giving some consideration to a roster move.
Sat. Apr 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Noesi will be added to the Rangers' 25-man roster in the coming days.
Impact: After wearing out his welcome in Seattle, Noesi was traded to the Rangers on Saturday for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The right-hander has been knocked around to the tune of a 5.64 ERA in his major league career but does have a decent fastball that sits right around 93 mph, so the Rangers will at least give him a look in the bullpen.
Sat. Apr 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: The Mariners traded Noesi to the Rangers on Saturday for a player to be named later or cash, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
Impact: The M's had seen enough, after Noesi gave up three runs (including a walkoff homer) in his first two appearances of the year, designating him for assignment last week. At 27, he's struggled at the major league level and Triple-A, but at worst, he's organizational filler for Texas.
Fri. Apr 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Choo was 1-for-3 with three walks and a stolen base in the Rangers' 1-0 win over Houston in 12 innings Friday night.
Impact: He did exactly what you want your leadoff hitter to do, reaching base four times, and adding a stolen base. But his usually productive teammates couldn't get him home, leaving 16 runners on base and going 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position. With their prolific offense that isn't likely to happen on many nights so Choo should be in line for a lot of runs scored this season.
Fri. Apr 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Darvish was removed after the eighth inning of Friday's start versus the Astros with a cut on his right thumb, reports Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News.
Impact: Darvish was 101 pitches into the outing, but with a one-hit shutout working, it seems he should have had enough for at least one more frame. The cut on his thumb may or may not have been the reason for the exit, but it is easy to understand the Rangers not wanting to take any chances. Darvish ended the night with another outstanding line, as he struck out nine while walking just one. Consider him day-to-day right now with seemingly little chance of missing his next start.
Fri. Apr 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Beltre (quad) is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Astros.
Impact: Beltre is apparently still a little sore despite a team off day Thurday, so he will miss his second game in a row Friday. The Rangers said Thursday they are not planning to place Beltre on the disabled list as of now, so there's a chance he could still return to action sometime this weekend. Kevin Kouzmanoff will man the hot corner in his place Friday night.
Thu. Apr 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gimenez signed a minor-league deal with the Rangers on Saturday.
Impact: Gimenez was granted free agency last week instead of reporting to Triple-A Round Rock, but he didn't receive any suitable offers and eventually returned to the Rangers. He'll provide organizational depth at catcher with the team's Triple-A affiliate.
Thu. Apr 10, 2014 | STATS
News: Fielder was awful again Wednesday for the Rangers.
Impact: He went 0 for 4 and has a .421 OPS with no homers. Is there a bigger bust in the fantasy world currently?
Thu. Apr 10, 2014 | STATS
News: Ross did not get a decision Wednesday for the Rangers.
Impact: Ross gave up an unearned run in 5 1-3 innings, walking six. You should not use him until his control gets better.
Thu. Apr 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Lewis will have his scheduled start pushed back a few days, but has been assured that he'll be part of the Rangers' rotation, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star Telegram reports.
Impact: Lewis was expected to start on Saturday, but it now looks as if this will be pushed back to Monday or Tuesday, as the Rangers will need a few days to decide on how to clear up a roster spot. Adrian's Beltre's quadriceps MRI on Thursday showed favorable results, and since he likely won't be making a trip to the DL over the next few days, the Rangers will have to figure out another way to open up a roster spot for Lewis. Lewis does have an "opt out" for Thursday structured in his minor league contract, but he has agreed not to use it, since he's been assured a rotation spot by the team.
Thu. Apr 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Beltre (qudriceps) is not expected to be placed on the disabled list any time soon, Anthony Andros of FOX Sports Southwest reports.
Impact: Beltre recently had an MRI on his left quad, which revealed a strain that wasn't as bad as the team had originally thought. It's a Grade 1 strain, which is the mildest classification, so Beltre will likely miss just a few games before returning to the lineup. Fantasy owners can breathe a sigh of relief.
Wed. Apr 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Kouzmanoff's contract was purchased by the Rangers on Wednesday, John Blake of the team's official site reports.
Impact: The Rangers' regular third baseman, Adrian Beltre, is enduring a tight quadriceps at the moment, with an undetermined return date. Kouzmanoff, who will provide support at the corner infield spots, has notched five hits in his first 16 at-bats at Triple-A Round Rock, with one RBI and one run scored on the ledger.
Wed. Apr 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Murphy will start Wednesday's game at second base, Rangers VP of Comm. John Blake reports.
Impact: Murphy will bat sixth in Wednesday's order against Red Sox starter Jake Peavy. Murphy and Josh Wilson have shared the second-base duties of late, but if Adrian Beltre (quad) misses more time beyond Wednesday's game, both players could see extra playing time.
Wed. Apr 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Wilson will start Wednesday's game at third base, Rangers VP of Comm. John Blake reports.
Impact: Wilson will get the start in place of Adrian Beltre, who is out with an injured quad. Wilson and Donnie Murphy have shared the second-base duties of late, but if Beltre misses more time beyond Wednesday's game, both players could see extra playing time.
Wed. Apr 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: As expected, Beltre (quad) is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Rangers VP of Comm. John Blake reports.
Impact: Beltre will sit out Wednesday, and possibly longer, with the quad injury he suffered in Tuesday's game. An update on Beltre's outlook will be posted when more details become available, but Josh Wilson will man the hot corner in his place Wednesday.
Wed. Apr 9, 2014 | STATS
News: Beltre was hoping to get back in the lineup for Texas Rangers this week before being told he was going on the disabled list because of a strained left quadriceps. The DL move was retroactive to last Wednesday. The earliest he will be eligible to be activated is April 24, an off day for the Rangers.
Impact: Beltre said Monday that he didn't agree with the team putting him on the disabled list a day earlier. The third baseman says he had no say in the decision, but also acknowledged it was probably a smart move. He says he was ready to play Tuesday, a week after coming out of a game at Boston and returning home for an evaluation. Beltre managed to avoid hamstring issues last season, playing 161 games.
Tue. Apr 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Beltre, who left Tuesday's game with a tight quad, will not play Wednesday, and could perhaps miss even more time, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. He will return to Texas to have his sore left quadriceps muscle examined by team physician Dr. Keith Meister, which should include an MRI exam.
Impact: Apparently the quadriceps soreness was in a different location than the soreness he dealt with in the spring, but the Rangers, including Beltre, where in no hurry to discuss the ailment after the game. If he is forced to the DL, Kevin Kouzmanoff could be called up from Triple-A Round Rock to man the hot corner.
Tue. Apr 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Soria gave up three earned runs on four hits in a non-save situation Tuesday against the Red Sox.
Impact: He recorded all three outs in the ninth inning via the strikeout, but damaged his owners' ERA in the process. It was Soria's second outing in three nights, which isn't an unusual workload for a closer, but perhaps manager Ron Washington will think twice before sending Soria in with a six-run lead in the future.
Tue. Apr 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez gave up four earned runs on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts Tuesday, but still got the win, as his teammates put a hurting on Felix Doubront.
Impact: Boston certainly isn't an easy lineup to get through unscathed, and Perez wasn't as sharp as his owners would probably like, but it wasn't completely unproductive, as he got the win. He'll look to put fewer runners on base Monday against the Mariners, in the first start of a two-start week.
Tue. Apr 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Chirinos got the start at catcher Tuesday and went 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk, two runs and two RBI against the Red Sox.
Impact: J.P. Arencibia is expected to see the most time behind the dish for the Rangers, but Chirinos could start seeing more frequent starts if he continues to produce.
Tue. Apr 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Adduci replaced Adrian Beltre (quad) after the fourth inning Tuesday and went 1-for-2 with a run as the Rangers' designated hitter for the second half of the game against the Red Sox.
Impact: Beltre hobbled off the field, but will likely return sometime this week to DH. However, Adduci could be an option for the Rangers if Beltre needs a few games off.
Tue. Apr 8, 2014 | STATS
News: Fielder went 0 for 4 in Monday's 5-1 loss at Boston.
Impact: Fielder is hitting .143 with no homers and just one RBI in the first seven games.
Tue. Apr 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Beltre hobbled off the field after hitting a RBI double in the fourth inning Tuesday and is done for the night, MLB.com's Ian Browne reports.
Impact: Beltre is always going to move a little gingerly because of the tightness and scar tissue in his left quad/leg, and with the Rangers up 8-1 over the Red Sox after four innings, it seemed like an opportune time to take him out. Consider him day-to-day, but we'd expect him to play through the pain as a DH if he can.
Tue. Apr 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Lewis (hip) is scheduled to start Saturday for the Rangers if he progresses through the rest of the week without a setback, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Impact: Lewis' first start back offers a favorable matchup, as he's scheduled to face the Astros in a home game at Arlington.
Tue. Apr 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Moreland isn't in the Rangers' lineup Tuesday in Boston, John Blake of the team's official site reports.
Impact: Moreland has posted at least one hit in five of his last six appearances, batting 6-for-19 (.316) with two RBI and two runs scored. He'll hand over the DH role to Adrian Beltre, while Josh Wilson handles the hot corner against Red Sox southpaw Felix Doubrant.
Tue. Apr 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Harrison (back) gave up one run on three hits and no walks, while striking out three in 4.2 innings, during Tuesday's rehab start.
Impact: Moreover, Harrison reached 91 mph in each of his five frames, Anthony Andro of FOX Sports Southwest reports. The development is much more encouraging than Harrison's abbreviated outing last Thursday, when he was limited to two innings due to a rainout. In any case, he has two more rehab appearances remaining before his activation from the DL will be considered.
Tue. Apr 8, 2014 | STATS
News: The Rangers have put Saunders on the disabled list because of a bruised left ankle.
Impact: He was hit by a comebacker in his start on Friday. He isn't expected to have much fantasy value this season.
Mon. Apr 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Lewis may soon get the call to the big leagues, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star Telegram reports.
Impact: Lewis has been pitching for Triple-A Round Rock since the start of the season, but with Joe Saunders (ankle) heading to the DL, a spot in the rotation may have just opened up. The Rangers will only need four starters this time through the rotation however, so his callup may be delayed just a bit longer.
Mon. Apr 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: McCutchen was recalled from Double-A Frisco on Monday, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star Telegram reports.
Impact: McCutchen will be available to pitch Monday night in Boston if necessary, as he was recalled to take the roster spot of Joe Saunders, who was placed on the DL with an ankle injury. McCutchen was roughed up over a short sample size with the Rangers this year, so he likely won't be pitching in any high leverage situations Monday.
Mon. Apr 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Saunders (ankle) has been placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to April 5, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star Telegram reports.
Impact: Saunders expressed confidence on Sunday that he would make his next scheduled start, but that notion was shut down on Monday, as he'll land on the disabled list. He'll have just over a week to rest his swollen ankle before returning to the mound, but if the Rangers end up calling up Colby Lewis to be their fifth starter, Saunders may not get that chance. Alexi Ogando would be another potential candidate to make a spot start, if necessary.
Mon. Apr 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rios went 2-for-3 with a walk and his first stolen base of the season in Monday's 5-1 loss to the Red Sox.
Impact: Rios got a great jump off of Boston's John Lackey and was safe by a mile. It was the outfielder's first theft attempt this season, but he'd already been active at the plate and is now 10-for-26 (.385 BA) with a homer, four runs, and five RBI.
Mon. Apr 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Scheppers gave up two runs on nine hits and a walk over five innings in Monday's 5-1 loss to the Red Sox.
Impact: Scheppers didn't give up seven runs like in his first outing, but he still wasn't particularly sharp. That said, the Red Sox benefited from soft singles, and none of the nine hits Scheppers allowed went for extra bases. It was a major step up from his first outing, even though he struck out just two batters and faced a lineup that dropped off hard after the first four spots. Scheppers draws a great matchup in his next start, which is scheduled for Sunday at home versus the Astros.
Mon. Apr 7, 2014 | STATS
News: Andrus hit a two-run homer as the Texas Rangers avoided a three-game sweep by beating the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 on Sunday.
Impact: Andrus has a .833 OPS for the Rangers.
Mon. Apr 7, 2014 | STATS
News: Darvish allowed seven hits over seven innings in his season debut as the Texas Rangers avoided a three-game sweep by beating the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 on Sunday.
Impact: Darvish struck out six and walked one. Sidelined by neck stiffness, it was his first outing since a spring training game on March 16. "I didn't feel anything unusual," Darvish said through an interpreter. Darvish got his 500th career strikeout, coming in 401 2-3 innings, by fanning David DeJesus and Wil Myers in the first. According to the Rangers, it is the fewest innings for a starter to reach 500 strikeouts in major league history.
Mon. Apr 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Lewis allowed two earned runs over five innings during his rehab start at Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.
Impact: Lewis threw 98 pitches, which was believed to be the final hurdle before possibly rejoining the Texas rotation. He can opt of his contract if he's not added to the major-league roster by the end of the week, though it remains to be seen if he'll join the back end of the rotation or not.
Mon. Apr 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Soria recorded his first save of the season, setting down all three batters he faced during the ninth inning of Sunday's win over the Rays.
Impact: For Soria, place a mark in the saves column for the first time since 2011. The two-time All-Star needed only 14 pitches to retire all three Rays that he faced during the final frame of Sunday's 3-0 victory and has looked strong here in the early going of 2014.
Mon. Apr 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Darvish (neck) was outstanding in his 2014 debut, tossing seven shutout innings with six strikeouts and seven hits allowed to earn the victory over the Rays on Sunday afternoon.
Impact: After a neck ailment cost him the start on Opening Day, Darvish took the mound Sunday and appeared close to top form versus the Rays. The 27-year-old All-Star also displayed great command, throwing 65-of-89 pitches for strikes and only giving up one free pass en route to his first win of the season.
Sun. Apr 6, 2014 | STATS
News: Wilson had three hits in a 5-4 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday.
Impact: The Texas infielder is 5 for 8 with a double and three RBIs in his first three games this season.
Sun. Apr 6, 2014 | STATS
News: Andrus had three hits and drove in a run in a 5-4 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday.
Impact: The Texas shortstop is 7 for 20 (.350) during a five-game hit streak to open the season.
Sun. Apr 6, 2014 | STATS
News: The Texas Rangers have activated Yu Darvish from the 15-day disabled list to start Sunday's game against Tampa Bay and optioned Martinez to Double-A Frisco.
Impact: Martinez pitched well in his major league debut Saturday night, allowing three runs and four hits over six innings against the Rays. He was in line for a victory until Tampa Bay scored twice in the eighth off Neal Cotts en route to a 5-4 win. "He's going to pitch for the Texas Rangers as we move forward at some point for a long time," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "Don't read anything too much into the fact he's been sent back down."

News: Martinez was optioned to Double-A Frisco on Sunday, Jeff WIlson of the Fort Worth Star Telegram reports.
Impact: Martinez had a solid start Saturday in a no-decision, but with Yu Darvish returning to the mound Sunday, a spot needed to be cleared on the roster. Martinez will continue to work on his craft in the minors and would be a potential callup candidate if any further injuries happen in the Rangers' rotation.

News: Darvish (neck) was activated from the 15-day disabled list Sunday, the Rangers' VP of Communications reports.
Impact: Darvish, as expected, will take the mound against Alex Cobb when the Rangers square off against the Rays on Sunday. His Tuesday bullpen session was more successful than anticipated, so the Rangers' ace only had to miss one scheduled start due to a neck ailment.

News: Profar (shoulder) has resumed taking ground balls at second base, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Impact: This doesn't appear to have altered his initial return date any, but it is nice to see Profar making progress from his torn shoulder muscle. He's expected to be cleared to start swinging a bat in about two weeks.

News: Choice got his first start of the season Saturday night against the Rays' David Price, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
Impact: Choice replaced Mitch Moreland in the lineup and gave Alex Rios a chance to DH. This was a pretty tough draw for Choice, given the rust and the opposing pitcher.
Apr 6, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Martinez gave up three runs on four hits and three walks over six innings Saturday, striking out three. He left with a lead but got a no-decision.
Impact: Two of the four hits in the game were homers, so he was a little lucky to give up just three runs. This could be a one-and-done appearance for Martinez, depending on what the Rangers do with Colby Lewis and Joe Saunders.
Apr 6, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Saunders (ankle) is confident he'll make his next start. It's not a sure thing, however, that the Rangers will opt to use him, given that the team has a deadline whether to call up Colby Lewis and put him into the rotation the day before Saunders is due to pitch.
Impact: Saunders was able to play catch Saturday, one day after leaving his start with a bruised ankle. "It's a little swollen," Saunders said. "Not a lot, but a little bit. We've got some color in there. I think it's just bruised. It's not great, but it's OK."

News: Gimenez has opted to become a free agent.
Impact: Gimenez chose not to accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Round Rock, instead deciding to stand up for his rights as a veteran big leaguer.

News: The Texas Rangers have optioned reliever Daniel McCutchen to Double-A Frisco.
Impact: He will try to work out his woes at the Texas League club instead of Texas.
Sat. Apr 5, 2014 | STATS
News: The Texas Rangers have purchased the contract of right-hander Nick Martinez from Double-A Frisco.
Impact: Martinez was called up Saturday to make his major league debut as the starting pitcher that night against Tampa Bay.
Sat. Apr 5, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Moreland isn't in the Rangers' lineup Saturday in Tampa Bay, John Blake of the team's official site reports.
Impact: Moreland is yielding DH for the first time this season, with Alex Rios avoiding the field but batting his typical fifth spot in the order. After failing to reach base in Monday's opener, Moreland has done so in each the last three contests and currently boasts a .286/.286/.500 slash line in 14 at-bats.
Sat. Apr 5, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gimenez was granted free agency Saturday rather than accept an assignment to Triple-A Round Rock, John Blake of the Rangers' official site reports.
Impact: Gimenez was the odd man out when Geovany Soto landed on the 60-day DL prior to the season due to a torn meniscus, as the Rangers opted have J.P Arencibia and Robinson Chirinos man the backstop in Soto's absence. Expect Gimenez to sign a minor league contract elsewhere that includes a potential clear path to the majors.
Sat. Apr 5, 2014 | RotoWire
News: McCutchen was optioned to Double-A Frisco on Saturday, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Impact: McCutchen's roster spot was required for Saturday's starter, Nick Martinez. It wouldn't surprise, if McCutchen remained in the minors for a bit due to a porous performance -- three runs (two earned) on four hits, including a homer, and two walks in 2.1 innings -- in his sole appearance of the season Friday in Tampa Bay.
Sat. Apr 5, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Martinez's contract was purchased in advance of Saturday's start in Tampa Bay, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Impact: Martinez posted a fine spring -- one earned run on five hits with a 10:2 K:BB in 7.1 innings across three outings -- but with no appearances above Double-A, he's a risky bet to prosper against a steady Rays' lineup.
Fri. Apr 4, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Fielder went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Friday's loss to the Rays.
Impact: For Fielder, the RBI was his first in a Rangers uniform. Now four games in, the All-Star slugger is 4-for-16 at the plate with one double and three singles. The lineup certainly needs more from its powerful first baseman
Fri. Apr 4, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Saunders, who was hit by a line drive Friday, has a bruised ankle after X-rays were negative, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: The bruised ankle may cause him to miss his next start but the Rangers will wait a couple of days before making that determination. Alexi Ogando may be called upon should Saunders miss a start.
Fri. Apr 4, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Saunders left Friday's game after taking a line drive off the outside of his left ankle, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: Considering Saunders had already given up four runs on six hits and three walks through just 3.2 innings, he probably wasn't long for this game anyway. He will have X-rays.
Fri. Apr 4, 2014 | RotoWire
News: The Mariners designated Noesi for assignment Friday, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.
Impact: Noesi gave up a walk-off homer to Coco Crisp in the 12th inning of Thursday's game, which was evidently the last straw for the M's. The 27-year-old right-hander will now be subjected to waivers and with a 5.64 ERA and a 6.4 K/9 in his major league career, it seems likely he'll go unclaimed and end up at Triple-A Tacoma.
Fri. Apr 4, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Harrison (back) pitched just two innings in his first rehab start Thursday before rain cancelled the game.
Impact: Harrison had hoped to throw four innings and about 20 more pitches. He had been scheduled for three more rehab starts, and that likely hasn't changed as a result of the shorter-than-expected outing.
Thu. Apr 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Noesi gave up a walk-off homer to the first batter he faced in the 12th inning Thursday in Oakland.
Impact: In two outings this season, Noesi has faced six batters and allowed half of them to score. So he's in midseason form.
Thu. Apr 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gimenez has cleared waivers and will be assigned to Triple-A Round Rock, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: Gimenez will have the option to reject the assignment and become a free agent if he chooses to, but will otherwise be starting the season in the minors. He was once in the mix to compete for a backup catcher role due to the absence of Geovany Soto (knee), but the Rangers seem content to roll with J.P. Arencibia and Robinson Chirinos instead.
Thu. Apr 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Lewis will make another start for Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday, and won't return to the Rangers until April 11 at the earliest, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: Lewis gave up five runs over 5.1 innings during an exhibition game last Tuesday, and will look to tighten things up in Sunday's start. There should be an opportunity for a spot in the Rangers' rotation staring him down, but he'll likely need to prove his effectiveness at the minor league level first.

Impact: Martin drove in two runs and is 5 for 11 on the year.

News: Ross did not get a decision in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Phils.
Impact: Ross struck out seven over five innings in his first major league start after 123 relief appearances the past two seasons. He allowed three runs and seven hits with two walks.
Wed. Apr 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Martin went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in Wednesday's win over the Phillies.
Impact: To begin the season, Martin was used as the Rangers' No. 8 hitter in each of three games against the Phillies. For the time being, that figures to be his primary spot, but Martin could be bumped up in the order later this season depending on the health and production of Elvis Andrus, among others.
Wed. Apr 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Ross struck out seven and walked two while giving up three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits over five innings Wednesday in a no-decision against the Phillies.
Impact: As a left-handed pitcher, Ross likely benefited from the lefty-heavy nature of the Philadelphia lineup. The Rangers' rotation plans are dependent upon the health of several players currently on the disabled list, but Ross is projected for another start Tuesday at Fenway Park against the Red Sox.
Wed. Apr 2, 2014 | STATS
News: The Texas Rangers say ace Yu Darvish is set to make his first start of the season Sunday at Tampa Bay.
Impact: Manager Ron Washington says Darvish is as strong as he was before the neck stiffness that kept the pitcher from throwing for two weeks. Darvish was placed on the disabled list to start the season, though the move was retroactive to March 21, making the right-hander eligible to be activated this weekend.

News: Beltre recorded his first two RBIs of 2014 on Tuesday against the Phillies for Texas.
Impact: Beltre dipped to 92 RBIs a year ago so hopefully he can get back on track.

News: Perez did not get a decision Tuesday against the Phillies for Texas.
Impact: Perez struck out seven in 5 2-3 innings, allowing two runs. His next start is against the defending champion Boston Red Sox so beware.
Wed. Apr 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Holland (knee) threw 25 pitches Wednesday and will throw again Saturday in Surprise, AZ, which marks the first time he's thrown since his surgery, the Rangers' official Twitter feed reports.
Impact: Holland is one of the better stash candidates for leagues with DL spots, as he's expected to return in June, and his injury/surgery was a lower-body issue, so theoretically his arm should be fine upon return.
Wed. Apr 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Scheppers' next start will be Monday against the Red Sox, the Star-Telegram's Drew Davison reports.
Impact: For now the Rangers will use a six-man rotation, as Yu Darvish (neck) will return to pitch Sunday, which was going to be Scheppers' second outing of the season.
Wed. Apr 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Scheppers' next scheduled start, Sunday against the Rays, will instead be pitched by Yu Darvish (neck), Fox Sports Southwest's Anthony Andro reports.
Impact: Scheppers hasn't officially be bounced from the Rangers' rotation, but his seven-run disaster on Opening Day probably didn't do much to secure a spot upon Darvish's return from a neck injury. Once word comes out about Scheppers' role with the team going forward, we'll update his status.
Wed. Apr 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Darvish (neck) will get the start Sunday for the Rangers against Alex Cobb in Tampa Bay, Fox Sports Southwest's Anthony Andro reports.
Impact: He threw an 86-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, and the outing must have been a success, as the team will waste no time getting him back on the mound, after he was scratched as the Opening Day starter due to neck stiffness. Owners who were able to get Darvish at a slight discount late in the drafting season will certainly be smiling as he'll miss just one start because of the ailment.
Wed. Apr 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Wilson will get the start at second base Wednesday and bat ninth, Rangers VP of Communications John Blake reports.
Impact: Wilson and Donnie Murphy will be splitting time at second base while Jurickson Profar is on the mend, but neither player offers much fantasy upside in the short term.
Wed. Apr 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Beltre had successful surgery Wednesday, which included a rod being put in his right leg to strengthen it, the Star-Telegram's Drew Davidson reports.
Impact: He will be out of action for at least 10 weeks, meaning Leonys Martin and Alex Rios should be in the lineup almost every day for the Rangers, with Michael Choice being used as the primary backup outfielder.
Wed. Apr 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Harrison (back) will make a rehab start Thursday at Double-A Frisco, ESPNDallas.com reports.
Impact: Harrison is scheduled to pitch four innings this outing, and if all goes well he will have a chance to rejoin the Rangers' rotation later in April.
Wed. Apr 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Wilson and Donnie Murphy are both expected to see time at second base for the duration of Jurickson Profar's absence, the team's web site reports.
Impact: Wilson collected three RBI in the opener but found himself sitting in favor of Murphy on Tuesday. Wilson doesn't offer much unless he can manage to get everyday at-bats and rack up decent counting stats as a result, a scenario that seems unlikely at the moment.
Wed. Apr 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Murphy and Josh Wilson have split the first two games at second base, an arrangement that is expected to continue according to manager Ron Washington, the team's web site reports.
Impact: Murphy offers some decent pop, though is still just third-base eligible in most formats. Murphy collected one hit in four at-bats Tuesday.
Tue. Apr 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Soria picked up the win Tuesday against the Phillies with a perfect ninth inning.
Impact: Soria recorded one strikeout and set up a walk-off opportunity for his offense, and they delivered. So far, so good for Soria, who has wasted no time providing value for his opportunistic fantasy owners.
Tue. Apr 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez gave up two earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings Tuesday against the Phillies.
Impact: He took the no-decision, as the Rangers' offense was stymied by A.J. Burnett. Still, this is a positive sign for Perez and his owners, especially in the strikeout department, as he posted just a 15.9 percent strikeout rate in 2013, which was below league average.
Tue. Apr 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Lewis threw 92 pitches in a minor league exhibition game Tuesday as he continued his comeback from hip surgery, giving up five runs in 5.1 innings, the Associated Press reports.
Impact: He could be in the Rangers' rotation as soon as April 6 after a stint in Triple-A Round Rock, although he probably wasn't as effective Tuesday as the Rangers would have hoped. The team's rotation is currently in shambles, so the five runs he surrendered Tuesday might not be enough to delay his entrance into the big-league rotation in short order.
Tue. Apr 1, 2014 | STATS
News: Scheppers became the first pitcher to make their first career start on Opening Day since Fernando Valenzuela in 1981, but was shelled, allowing eight hits and seven runs in Monday's loss to Philadelphia.
Impact: Scheppers' first act in his transition from the bullpen to the rotation was about as bad as it could possibly be, but he'll get a chance to redeem himself in his next scheduled start Sunday at Tampa Bay.
Tue. Apr 1, 2014 | STATS
News: Martin was 2 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs in Monday's loss to the Phillies.
Impact: Martin is off to a good start in a year where many have pegged him as a potential breakout player.
Tue. Apr 1, 2014 | STATS
News: Beltre was 2 for 3 and doubled in Texas' Opening Day loss to the Phillies.
Impact: Beltre, who also walked Monday, is off to a good start as he seeks a .315-plus batting average for the fourth time in five seasons.
Tue. Apr 1, 2014 | STATS
News: Rios was 3 for 5 with a three-run homer in Texas' 14-10 loss to Philadelphia on Monday.
Impact: Rios should benefit with the likes of Prince Fielder and Adrian Beltre batting in front of him.
Tue. Apr 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Darvish (neck) threw an 86-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, but the Rangers will wait and see how he reacts to it before determining his return date, Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Impact: After sleeping on the session, expect the Rangers to make a call Wednesday, which will be closely watched due to Darvish's billing as the reigning top strikeout artist in the majors. Don't be alarmed, though, if the team takes a cautious approach with their ace.
Tue. Apr 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Chirinos will start at catcher and bat ninth Tuesday against the Phillies, John Blake of the Rangers' official site reports.
Impact: Despite word that J.P Arencibia will cover the backstop most days due to Geovany Soto's knee injury, Chirinos is receiving the first nod against a right-hander (A.J. Burnett) this season. In 32 spring at-bats, Chirinos put up a monster .438/.486/.656 line with one homer, seven RBI, four runs scored, and a 3:8 BB:K.
Tue. Apr 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: McCutchen had his contract selected by the Rangers on Tuesday.
Impact: The Texas bullpen was forced to go five innings in relief of Tanner Scheppers on Monday, and the team opted to add a fresh arm in McCutchen prior to Tuesday's game. In 108 appearances (15 starts) at the major league level to this point, McCutchen has posted a 4.77 ERA and just a 5.0 K/9, so it seems safe to assume he'll work in low-leverage situations while up.
Tue. Apr 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Murphy is covering second base and batting seventh Tuesday versus the Phillies, John Blake of the Rangers' official site reports.
Impact: Murphy is getting the start against the right-handed A.J. Burnett, as Josh Wilson takes a seat. During Jurickson Profar's (shoulder) lengthy DL stint, expect Murphy to garner the bulk of the work at the keystone.
Tue. Apr 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: The Rangers designated Gimenez for assignment Tuesday.
Impact: Four days after claiming Gimenez off waivers from the A's, the Rangers went ahead and bumped him from the 40-man roster to make room for right-hander Daniel McCutchen. Gimenez was brought in for catching depth after Geovany Soto went down with a knee injury, but apparently Texas is content with calling up Brett Nicholas or Jose Felix if there is another injury behind the plate.
Tue. Apr 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Darvish (neck) will toss a bullpen session Tuesday, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.
Impact: This marks Darvish's second bullpen session in his quest for complete health. While his stiff neck has pushed back his 2014 debut, there is hope that he'll be able to make a start as early as Sunday in Tampa Bay. However, no timetable yet exists for his return to the Rangers' rotation.
Mon. Mar 31, 2014 | STATS
News: Darvish has thrown an 86-pitch bullpen session and could return to the rotation in the next week.
Impact: Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Monday that Darvish could return without making a rehabilitation start. He's eligible to come off the disabled list Saturday.

News: The Rangers designated Rosales for assignment on Sunday.
Impact: Rosales hit .182 in 17 games for Texas in 2013.
Sun. Mar 30, 2014 | STATS
News: Texas selected the contract of Wilson from Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.
Impact: Wilson has a chance to start for the Rangers at second base.
Sun. Mar 30, 2014 | STATS
News: Harrison says his second minor league rehab start was a step in the right direction as he tries to work his way back into the Texas Rangers' rotation.
Impact: Harrison allowed three hits and one run over 4 2-3 innings Tuesday for Double-A Frisco. The left-hander struck out three with no walks, five days after his start in the RoughRiders' season opener was shortened by rain. The Rangers' opening day starter in 2013 is penciled in for an April 23 return. He made only two starts last season before two operations for a herniated disk in his back, then had a setback with neck and back stiffness.
