News: Strasburg (5-1) was not sharp Saturday, but backed by the Nationals' 12 hits, he still won as Washington defeated Atlanta 8-4.
Impact: He set a season high with four walks while giving up four runs and six hits in five innings. He had six strikeouts.
Sun. May 27, 2012 | STATS
News: Harper went 2 for 4 with a solo homers in Saturday's 8-4 win over Atlanta.
Impact: Harper is 10 for 23 during a six-game hitting streak.
Sun. May 27, 2012 | STATS
News: Espinosa added a three-run shot to help Washington strengthen its hold on first place in the NL East by beating the struggling Atlanta Braves 8-4 on Saturday.
Impact: Espinosa is batting .318 with two homers and five RBIs in his last six games.
Sun. May 27, 2012 | STATS
News: Leon has left the game in the fourth inning after spraining his right ankle in a collision at home plate during his major league debut.
Impact: Leon was crouched to take a relay throw from shortstop Danny Espinosa as San Diego's Chase Headley tried to score on Orlando Hudson's single to center field on Monday night. The throw got past Leon just before Headley bowled into him, causing the catcher's right ankle to buckle under him. Leon rose and limped a few steps before dropping to his knees. Leon was called up from Double-A Harrisburg Sunday to replace catcher Wilson Ramos, who tore his ACL on Saturday.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Nady is not in the starting lineup Sunday against the Braves, the Washington Post's Adam Kilgore reports.
Impact: Nady is struggling so far this season, hitting .136 in 30 games.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Lombardozzi is in the starting lineup Sunday against the Braves, the Washington Post's Adam Kilgore reports.
Impact: He'll leadoff and play left field. Lombardozzi is swinging a hot stick in May, hitting .340 in the month. He'll face off against Brandon Beachy on Sunday night.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Gorzelanny struck out four over three innings of shutout relief Saturday.
Impact: Over his last 10 innings he's got a 1.80 ERA and 9:2 K:BB ratio, but he won't have much fantasy value as long as he remains stuck in long relief.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Espinosa went 2-for-5 Saturday with a double, home run, two runs scored and three RBI out of the leadoff spot.
Impact: He's starting to turn things around, going 7-for-22 (.318) over his last six games with three doubles and two home runs, but he's also struck out eight times in those six games. Espinosa will give you power and speed, but his .222 batting average might not improve much over the rest of the season.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Harper went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Saturday, an opposite-field laser off Johnny Venters.
Impact: Venters is usually murder on lefties (career OPS vs. LHB of .552), which makes the homer all-the-more impressive. Harper's working on a six-game hitting streak, with multi-hit efforts in four of those six games, to boost his line on the season up to .278/.366/.495. You have to keep reminding yourself that the kid is still only 19 years old.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Detwiler has lost his rotation spot, and will pitch in long relief going forward, the Washington Post reports.
Impact: Chien-Ming Wang will take over as the fifth starter. Detwiler's recent struggles gave the Nationals little choice, and if Detwiler doesn't turn things around in the bullpen a demotion to Triple-A could even be possible.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Nationals manager Davey Johnson has confirmed that Wang will take over as the fifth starter, the Washington Post reports.
Impact: The move was close to a foregone conclusion given Ross Detwiler's recent struggles, and Wang's history of shoulder trouble makes him a poor fit for the up-and-down work of bullpen duty anyway. His first start should come Wednesday in Miami.
May 27, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Tracy injured his groin on a pinch-hit double during Saturday's win over the Braves, the Washington Post reports.
Impact: The Nats are hoping Tracy merely broke up some scar tissue from his November sports hernia surgery, but won't know for sure until they get the results of an MRI back. "I'm pretty sore right now," Tracy said after the game. "We'll see what happens tomorrow. I'm not quite sure. It could be a couple different things."
Sat. May 26, 2012 | STATS
News: Zimmerman was 2 for 4 with three RBIs Friday in a 7-4 win over Atlanta.
Impact: Zimmerman is 10 for 27 in his last six games.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | STATS
News: Ankiel hit a two-run triple in Washington's four-run first inning and the first-place Nationals beat the slumping Atlanta Braves 7-4 on Friday night.
Impact: Ankiel is 4 for 12 with a homer and three RBIs in the last three games.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Clippard retired two batters to earn his third save of the season in Saturday's win over the Braves.
Impact: He was even able to record a strikeout in his short appearance. Clippard has been terrific over his last 10 appearances, allowing just one run over 9.2 innings while earning three saves. It's appearing more and more likely that Clippard is the Nationals' closer moving forward.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Strasburg allowed four runs over five innings and was the winning pitcher Saturday against the Braves.
Impact: He gave up six hits while walking four and striking out six. Despite allowing a season-high in walks, Strasburg was able to limit the damage, and was also fortunate enough to receive plenty of run support. The win brings his record to 5-1 on the season to accompany a 2.64 ERA, 70 strikeouts, and 17 walks.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Tyler Clippard and Sean Burnett will close games for the Nationals over Stammen for the time being, MLB.com's William Ladson reports.
Impact: It was thought that Stammen had a chance to split the role with Clippard and Burnett, but that does not appear to be the case any longer. Although he is having an excellent year in a long-relief/setup role, you can safely drop Stammen if he is on your roster.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Espinosa (leg) went 0-for-3 with a run scored in Friday's victory over the Braves.
Impact: Espinosa injured his leg sliding into home plate in Wednesday's game, but the setback did not end up costing him any time. Espinosa, who batted sixth Friday, will fill the top spot in the order Saturday afternoon.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Ankiel is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Braves, according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson.
Impact: Ankiel is 4-for-12 - including three extra-base hits - with three RBI over his last three games, but he will take a seat with left-hander Mike Minor on the mound for the Braves on Saturday. Bryce Harper will slide over and man center field in Ankiel's place.
Sat. May 26, 2012 | RotoWire
News: LaRoche went 0-for-4 Friday, and is now just one for his last 24.
Impact: He's hit his first real slump of the season, which is impressive for a player who had a long track record of slumping through the entire first half. His .289/.383/.530 line on the season so far is still plenty respectable, and with Ryan Zimmerman showing signs of life at the plate and Mike Morse getting close to returning, the pressure should soon be off LaRoche to carry the offensive load by himself.
Fri. May 25, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Detwiler struggled again Friday, allowing three runs on five hits while walking four and striking out five over just 4.1 innings. He ended up with a no-decision in a game Washington would win, 7-4, over Atlanta.
Impact: He still has a respectable 3.88 ERA based mostly on his exceptionally strong start to the season, but he has had a very difficult time throwing strikes in his most recent outings (he threw just 61 of 100 pitches for strikes in this one). He is scheduled to face Miami on the road in his next start and he needs a strong performance to solidify his claim on a rotation spot now that Chien-Ming Wang is back from the disabled list.
Fri. May 25, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Zimmerman was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI on Friday night.
Impact: Zimmerman has been rather dormant for most of the first two months of the season, which included a DL stint. But he has shown signs of coming to life. Both hits were doubles Friday, and he has his average up to .256 on the season, so an offensive breakout could be on the horizon.
Fri. May 25, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Clippard picked up his second save with a clean ninth inning Friday, registering two strikeouts, as the Nationals dropped the Braves, 7-4.
Impact: Since Henry Rodriguez was moved to a set-up role, the Nationals are technically employing a closer committee, but it appears Clippard may get the biggest share of save opportunities.
Fri. May 25, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Wang picked up his first win of the year with three solid innings of relief, allowing three hits and one run. He did not issue a walk nor record any strikeouts.
Impact: Wang took over for Ross Detwiler, who again struggled with his command, and he could be in line for a shot at the rotation if Detwiler's struggles continue.
Thu. May 24, 2012 | STATS
News: DeRosa, on the disabled list with a left oblique strain, aggravated the injury Sunday while giving Bryce Harper a high five, according to the Washington Post.
Impact: It may have set back his rehab, although he wasn't expected back until later this month.
Thu. May 24, 2012 | RotoWire
News: LaRoche went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Wednesday in a loss at Philadelphia.
Impact: LaRoche ended an 0-for-19 stretch with his blast in the final inning Wednesday. He is having an excellent year to date, posting a .297/.392/.545 line with eight home runs and 33 RBI through 40 games. With no other potent bats around him, though, LaRoche could see his production dip if pitchers focus their efforts on him, knowing his teammates find it difficult to succeed at the plate.
Thu. May 24, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Jackson went seven innings Wednesday, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four as Washington lost at Philadelphia.
Impact: Wednesday's game marked Jackson's fifth quality start in nine nods this season, with his 3.38 ERA, 1.006 WHIP, and 7.67 K/9IP deserving of a handful of wins. However, he fell to 1-2 on the season, as he's received 3.22 runs of support on average this year.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Espinosa had his right leg wrapped in ice postgame after hurting himself on a hard slide into home plate in Wednesday's loss at Philadelphia, Mark Zuckerman of CSN Washington reports.
Impact: Espinosa, who went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk Wednesday, insisted he was fine. Since he has an off-day before a three-game series begins Friday in Atlanta, he should have ample time to be in the Nationals' starting lineup. Still, consider him day-to-day.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | STATS
News: Zimmerman was a late scratch Tuesday due to right shoulder soreness.
Impact: Zimmerman is expected back in the lineup Wednesday.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | STATS
News: Harper tripled, singled and drove in two runs for the Nationals in Tuesday's 5-2 win over Philadelphia.
Impact: Harper is 8 for 21 in the last five games.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | STATS
News: Zimmermann pitched six solid innings, and Ian Desmond and Rick Ankiel homered to lead the Nationals to a 5-2 victory Tuesday night.
Impact: Zimmermann (3-4) earned his first win in five career starts against Philadelphia, surrendering one run and seven hits in six innings. He entered 0-3 with a 6.00 ERA against the Phillies.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Lidge (hernia) reported no problems following Wednesday's bullpen session, according to Amanda Comak of the Washington Times.
Impact: Lidge will take the next step in his recovery and advance to extended spring training Thursday. If he continues to make good progress he could be back with the big club around the middle of next month.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Lombardozzi went 2-for-5 with a run scored Tuesday.
Impact: With a .321/.389/.383 line on the season, Lombardozzi has been the Nationals only viable option for their leadoff spot so far. Expect manager Davey Johnson to keep finding ways to get him into the lineup, either in left field or at Danny Espinosa's expense at second base, as long as the rookie keeps getting on base.
Wed. May 23, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Desmond homered again Tuesday, his fourth long ball in seven games.
Impact: His recent hot streak has bumped his batting average up to .280, and his SLG to .487. Expect more RBI and fewer steals from Desmond going forward as he settles into a run-producing spot, as his .305 OBP simply doesn't cut at it at the top of the order.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Lombardozzi is starting in left field for the second consecutive day Tuesday and will lead off against the Phillies, Amanda Comak of The Washington Times reports.
Impact: Roger Bernadina is on the bench for the third straight game, and it appears as though Lombardozzi is getting an opportunity to play his way into a larger role for the Nats as the team continues to look for answers in left field and at the top of the batting order.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Bernadina is not in the lineup Tuesday against Phillies right-hander Roy Halladay, Amanda Comak of The Washington Times reports.
Impact: Bernadina has now gone three straight games without making a start, while Steve Lombardozzi is getting the nod in left field for the second straight day.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | STATS
News: The Nationals activated right-hander Chien-Ming Wang from the disabled list on Tuesday.
Impact: A left hamstring injury in spring training has kept Wang out all season. He is expected to pitch out of the bullpen. The right-hander went 5-4 with a 4.04 ERA last season after needing almost two years to come back from shoulder surgery.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Zimmerman, who was scratched Tuesday with shoulder tightness, will return to the lineup Wednesday, Mark Zuckerman of CSN Washington reports.
Impact: Still, we'll consider Zimmerman day-to-day until he actually takes the field Wednesday. He should be safe to play for daily lineup folks, but keep an eye out just in case.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Harper went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI against Roy Halladay and Philadelphia on Tuesday.
Impact: The highlight was a two-run triple off Halladay in the third inning. Harper appears to be shaking off the slump he went through and has his line back up to a very respectable .264/.343/.471.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Clippard earned the first save since the Nationals moved to a closer-by-committee Tuesday against Philadelphia, closing out a three-run lead with a clean inning.
Impact: These closer-by-committee type situations tend to get resolved by the hot hand, which looks good for Clippard, but don't forget that Davey Johnson alternated between Brad Lidge and Henry Rodriguez for a good couple of weeks before making a decision. Don't forget about Craig Stammen or Sean Burnett either.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Zimmermann picked up a win with a solid start at Philadelphia, allowing just one run on seven hits over six innings Tuesday.
Impact: Zimmermann moves to 3-4 on the season despite a 2.47 ERA -- it may be hard to pick up victories with Washington's mediocre offense (3.7 runs scored per game), but he's doing all he can. He only struck out two in Tuesday's game, but a 40:11 K:BB ratio bodes well for the future as well.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Zimmerman has been scratched from Tuesday's lineup against the Phillies due to a "manager's decision," Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post reports.
Impact: The Nats' revised lineup Tuesday now includes Chad Tracy, while Zimmerman could pinch-hit in the game, the report notes.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | STATS
News: Washington has placed Mattheus on the 15-day disabled list with plantar fasciitis in his left foot.
Impact: Mattheus is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | STATS
News: Gonzalez allowed three hits over six innings Monday in a 2-1 win over the Phils.
Impact: Gonzalez, a former Phillies farmhand, struck out seven of the first nine batters and finished with nine strikeouts. That upped his total to 35 over his last four starts, all wins, in 25 innings.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | STATS
News: Harper had two hits Monday in a 2-1 win over the Phils.
Impact: The wunderkind is hitting .256 with two jacks and seven RBIs.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | STATS
News: Desmond homered and had two hits Monday in a 2-1 win over the Phils.
Impact: Desmond is 6 for 18 with five RBIs over his last four games.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: The Nationals will use a committee to close games -- presumably including Burnett, Tyler Clippard and Craig Stammen -- after Henry Rodriguez was officially removed from the role Tuesday, Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports.
Impact: Burnett picked up his second save of the season after Rodriguez failed to convert an opportunity Monday night. If the committee arrangement holds up, Burnett should see his chances in lefty-heavy ninth-inning matchups.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: The Nationals will use a committee to close games -- presumably including Clippard, Craig Stammen and Sean Burnett -- after Henry Rodriguez was officially removed from the role Tuesday, Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports.
Impact: Nats manager Davey Johnson likes the versatility of Clippard in a setup role, so he may continue to be overlooked a bit given the success Stammen has had in the bullpen this season and the likely use of Sean Burnett in matchup situations where a lefty gives the Nats a leg up.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Rodriguez has been removed as the Nationals' closer and the team will use a committee instead, Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports.
Impact: The most likely outcome would seemingly point to a righty-lefty combo with Tyler Clippard and Sean Burnett handling save opportunities for the Nats, but Craig Stammen has had a strong season in the bullpen as well and could be a factor depending on matchups.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Mattheus has been diagnosed as having a partial tear in the plantar fascia in his left foot, reports Amanda Comak of the Washington Times.
Impact: He will wear a walking boot for a few weeks, but should be allowed to continues some lifting and throwing while his foot heals. This type of injury can take between 4-6 weeks to fully heal, though it is possible to pitch through it.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Mattheus (foot) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, William Ladson of MLB.com reports.
Impact: Chien-Ming Wang was activated from the DL while Mattheus lands on it. The 28-year-old is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in 20 innings of work on the year, but his 5.9 K/9 ratio is indicative of his less-than-dominant stuff.
Tue. May 22, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Wang (hamstring) was activated from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, William Ladson of MLB.com reports.
Impact: Ryan Mattheus was placed and the 15-day DL, and Wang will likely take his spot in the bullpen. He's only pitched out of the pen five times in his career, but there currently isn't room in the starting rotation for Wang. If Ross Detwiler, who has lost his last two decisions, continues to struggle, Wang might get a chance to start before long.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Burnett recorded his second save of the season Monday as the Nationals defeated the Phillies, 2-1. He recorded two outs and allowed one walk.
Impact: Burnett came in to replace a struggling Henry Rodriguez in the ninth inning for the season time this season and came away with a save both times. If Rodriguez continues to struggle, it looks like Burnett could be called upon in more save opportunities.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Rodriguez was pulled in the ninth inning Monday as the Nationals defeated the Phillies, 2-1. He allowed one run, one hit and one walk while recording only one out.
Impact: Rodriguez has been shaky at times this season, but has still managed to record nine saves. The Nationals have backed him before after tough outings, so it would seem likely he will continue to see the majority of the save opportunities unless his struggles continue.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Desmond went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored Monday as the Nationals defeated the Phillies, 2-1.
Impact: Although Desmond has only six walks this season, he has been productive as he has seven home runs and 20 RBI. While he holds more value in leagues that don't count OBP, he is still a valuable option in most other formats as well.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Gonzalez earned a win Monday as the Nationals defeated the Phillies, 2-1. He pitched six scoreless innings and allowed three hits and three walks to go along with nine strikeouts.
Impact: Gonzalez has won four starts in a row and already has six wins this season. Not only does he have a sparkling 1.98 ERA and 0.99 WHIP, but he has recorded 69 strikeouts in 54.2 innings pitched. Changing to the National League has provided a big boost to Gonzalez's fantasy value and he should continue to be an excellent option for the rest of the season.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | STATS
News: Strasburg allowed three runs - one earned - over five innings and also hit his first career homer in Sunday's win over Baltimore.
Impact: Strasburg allowed fewer than two runs for the sixth time in nine starts.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Mattheus was evaluated for a potential left foot injury Monday, Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post reports.
Impact: The injury was aggravated when Mattheus was running in the outfield Monday, while the Nats are hopeful that it's a case of plantar fasciitis that is treatable with rest.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Nats manager Davey Johnson said that Strasburg (biceps) will make his next start as scheduled and will not undergo an MRI, Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post reports.
Impact: Concern about Strasburg arm seemed to be put to rest Monday afternoon when he was spotted playing a game of Frisbee with his teammates during pre-game workouts. As a result, plan on having him available as you normally would for Saturday's start against the Braves.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Lidge is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday for the first time since undergoing sports hernia surgery May 1, Amanda Comak of the Washington Times reports.
Impact: Lidge played long toss Monday without issue, so the Nationals will allow him to take the next step in his recovery. If Wednesday's session goes as planned, Lidge will report to extended spring training to begin his rehab assignment with an eye on returning in mid-June.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Strasburg, who exited Sunday's game early with a sore biceps, took part in pregame activities with his teammates Monday, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports.
Impact: While Strasburg's activity amounted to a game of Frisbee, he was able to use his right arm without issue. Assuming Strasburg would not have been playing a simple game were he dealing with an actual arm injury, it's probably safe to assume that his early exit Sunday will not affect his status for his next start.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Ankiel is back in the lineup for Monday's game against the Phillies, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports.
Impact: Ankiel starts most games in center field for the Nationals, but Bryce Harper is seeing action there on days Ankiel sits. Ankiel's defensive prowess will earn him a spot in the lineup most days, but if Harper can handle center field, the Nationals may opt to use a better offensive player in one of the corners with Ankiel owning just a .666 OPS. As such, Ankiel will have to up his production at the plate to be of use to fantasy owners and remain a fixture in the lineup.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Zimmerman went 2-for-5 Sunday, his third straight multi-hit game.
Impact: Looks like the Nats' slugger is starting to wake from his slumber at the plate. In a shallow league where you've benched Zimmerman due to his lack of production, it might be time to consider getting him active again.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Desmond, dropped down to fifth in the batting order, went 2-for-5 Sunday with a double a two RBI.
Impact: It's the streaky Desmond's 10th multi-hit game in 19 May contests. From a fantasy perspective he's having a solid season, hitting .275 with six home runs and four steals, but his .296 OBP simply wasn't cutting it at the top of the batting order. Expect him to settle into a slot towards the bottom of the order once the Nats get close to fully healthy provided that manager Davey Johnson can find a better table-setting option at the top.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Nady got a start in right field Sunday against lefty Wei-Yen Chen, going 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.
Impact: His line on the season has slipped to an atrocious .139/.195/.278. The Nationals have two right-handed bats getting close to returning from the DL in Mike Morse and Mark DeRosa, and Nady will likely find himself out of a job when they do.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Flores hit his first home run of the season in Sunday's win over the Orioles.
Impact: In seven starts since Wilson Ramos went on the shelf, Flores is hitting .292 (7-for-24). This will be his first extended chance to prove he's all the way back after a lengthy recovery from a 2009 shoulder injury, and so far so good for Flores.
Mon. May 21, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Strasburg said after Sunday's game that the tightness he felt in his biceps was just an expected part of his recovery process from Tommy John surgery, the Washington Post reports.
Impact: "Just got a little tired, got a little tight. But that's nothing different than any other outing," Strasburg said. "It's something that it's going to be like this for probably the rest of the year. It's just part of coming back from Tommy John. Building up the innings, getting the stamina and everything. It's something I've just got to be smart about." As yet the Nationals haven't announced that they are sending him for any tests to check Strasburg's arm, so if you're setting your roster for the week we'd say it's relatively safe to assume he'll take his next turn in the rotation.
Sun. May 20, 2012 | STATS
News: Detwiler allowed six runs in five innings of Saturday's 6-5 loss to Baltimore.
Impact: Detwiler's ERA has gone up from 1.59 to 3.65 in the last three starts.
Sun. May 20, 2012 | STATS
News: Zimmerman went 3 for 5 with a homer in Saturday's 6-5 loss to Baltimore.
Impact: Zimmerman improved to 6 for 14 in the previous three games.
May 20, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Strasburg was removed from Sunday's game after five innings and 90 pitches because of tightness in his right arm, The Sports Xchange reports.
Impact: Manager Davey Johnson thought Strasburg's biceps was bugging him but the pitcher thinks it's simple arm fatigue. While Johnson doesn't seem too concerned and also doesn't think Strasburg will miss his next start, you know the Nats are going to almost always err on the side of caution with Strasburg, and they're already committed to an innings count on the young star this season. In other words, something to monitor in the coming days even though we're not terribly worried right now.
May 20, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Harper went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and a triple Sunday against the Orioles.
Impact: Harper continues to be dynamic with his speed even when he's not stealing bases. The batting average isn't where owners would prefer (.244), but he's been productive overall, particularly in terms of power -- his .205 ISO is a fantastic mark for any hitter, much less a 19-year-old in his first MLB stint.
May 20, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Espinosa hit his fourth home run as part of a 2-for-5, two-run, two-RBI day.
Impact: Espinosa was given a shot as the leadoff hitter Sunday despite his season-long struggles and he rewarded manager Davey Johnson. He still has just a .214/.294/.338 line on the season and his two strikeouts on the day put him to 50 on the season already, but it was encouraging to see any sort of life out of Espinosa's bat at this point.
May 20, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Strasburg earned the win Sunday, allowing four hits and three runs (one earned) over five innings, striking out eight.
Impact: Strasburg allowed two runs in the second inning largely because of a Bryce Harper error in center field; outside of that hiccup he was excellent as usual. He now owns an absurd 64:13 K:BB ratio through his first 53 innings and has justified the high prices he commanded in drafts and auctions this season.
May 20, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Harper, penciled in again as the No. 2 hitter in the Nationals order, went 0-for-5 Saturday with two strikeouts.
Impact: His batting average is back down to .230 and the strikeouts are starting to pile up, as he's now whiffed 16 times in 20 games. If he continues to struggle, there's still a possibility the Nats send Harper back down to the minors when Mike Morse comes off the DL in a couple of weeks.
May 20, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Espinosa is back in Sunday's lineup against the Orioles, Amanda Comak of the Washington Times reports.
Impact: Espinosa, who appeared in Saturday's game as a pinch hitter, will be atop the Nats' order Sunday against O's lefty Wei-Yin Chen.

News: Ankiel is not Sunday's lineup against the Orioles, Amanda Comak of the Washington Times reports.
Impact: With Baltimore starting lefty Wei-Yin Chen, the Nats will roll out an outfield of Bryce Harper, Xavier Nady and Tyler Moore on Sunday.

News: Bernadina is not in Sunday's lineup against the Orioles, Amanda Comak of the Washington Times reports.
Impact: Bernadina will take a seat Sunday, with the Orioles sending lefty Wei-Yin Chen to the hill.

News: Flores is back in Sunday's lineup against the Orioles, Amanda Comak of the Washington Times reports.
Impact: Flores, who has been filling in behind the plate for Wilson Ramos, is back in there for the Nats on Sunday after giving way to Carlos Maldonado on Saturday.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Lombardozzi went 2-for-5 with an RBI as the Nationals' leadoff hitter Saturday.
Impact: He filled in at second for Danny Espinosa, who received a mental healthy day Saturday. The pair of hits raised Lombardozzi's 71-at-bat batting average to .324. That kind of production should find a home in an offensively-challenged Nationals lineup.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Zimmerman went 3-for-5 with a double and a solo home run in the Nationals' loss to the Orioles on Saturday.
Impact: The ninth-inning home run came off closer extraordinaire Jim Johnson, who has historically been stingy with the long ball. His earlier double marked Zimmerman's first extra-base hit since May 9.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Detwiler struggled against the Orioles on Saturday, allowing six runs on nine hits in five innings.
Impact: He allowed a pair of home runs in this one after allowing just two home runs in his previous seven starts combined. The Nationals' brass provided support prior to the game for Detwiler staying in the club's rotation through Chien-Ming Wang's return from the disabled list, and this outing will likely have little bearing on that decision.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Detwiler will remain in the Nationals' rotation even after Chien-Ming Wang returns from the disabled list, the Washington Times reports.
Impact: "Detwiler's just throwing too well not to be in the rotation," general manager Mike Rizzo said. The Nats will send Wang to the bullpen upon activation in late May, but he might sneak his way into the rotation before long. Detwiler will probably need to maintain a high level of play to maintain his spot in the rotation through the summer.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Wang (hamstring) will likely pitch out of the bullpen when he returns, the Washington Times' Amanda Comak reports.
Impact: Wang is expected to return in the next few days. He has only pitched out of the bullpen five times in his career, but there is no room for him in the starting rotation right now with Ross Detwiler pitching well. Wang will almost certainly be the first option if one of the Nationals' starters is hurt, or if Detwiler pitches poorly and loses his grasp on the No. 5 spot.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Espinosa is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against Baltimore, CSN's Mark Zuckerman reports.
Impact: Steve Lombardozzi will take Espinosa's place at second base and bat leadoff. Espinosa should be back in the lineup Sunday.

News: Jackson didn't receive a decision in a loss to the Orioles on Friday despite a solid start.
Impact: Jackson gave up one run and five hits in eight innings, striking out eight. He is 1-1 with a 3.31 ERA this season and has gone five games without a decision.
Sat. May 19, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Clippard struck out two in a shutout inning of relief Friday.
Impact: His control has been a little off this season as he's walked nine batters in 18 innings, leading to a 3.50 ERA, but his 10.5 K/9 is right about what you'd expect from one of the best set-up men in the game.
Fri. May 18, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Desmond homered and stole a base Friday night, his fourth of the season.
Impact: Unfortunately, Desmond was the Nationals offense as they couldn't solve Orioles starter Jake Arrieta, and would eventually lose in extra innings.
Fri. May 18, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Jackson turned in a gem Friday night, allowing one run on five hits, while walking one and striking out eight over eight innings, but was left with no decision as the Nationals lost in extra innings.
Impact: He got locked up in an old-fashioned pitcher's duel with his Baltimore counterpart Jake Arrieta, and neither would give in. Jackson has been a major contributor to one of baseball's best starting rotations and will carry a solid 3.31 ERA into his next start against the Phillies in Philadelphia.
Fri. May 18, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Morse (lat) hit from a tee Friday and will head to Viera to continue his rehab Monday, Amanda Comak of The Washington Times reports.
Impact: He may be two weeks away from returning to the Nats, but Morse's best bet could still be a June 8 return to the lineup as he would be able to serve as a DH during Interleague play when the Nats are on the road at that time.
Thu. May 17, 2012 | STATS
News: LaRoche went 3 for 4, homered and drove in four runs in Wednesday's win over Pittsburgh.
Impact: LaRoche is hitting .339 through 43 games. He's never hit better than the .285 average he posted with Atlanta in 2006.
Thu. May 17, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Zimmermann allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings against Pittsburgh on Thursday. He issued one walk and struck out six.
Impact: All of Zimmermann's damage came on three home runs, including a pair by Andrew McCutchen. It was one of Zimmermann's worst starts of the year, as he hadn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his previous seven outings.
Thu. May 17, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Morse (back) could arrive a week ahead of schedule, as he believes a June 1 return is possible, Mark Zuckerman of CSN Washington reports.
Impact: The Nationals had a June 8 date set, coinciding with their first day of road interleague play, which would allow him to come back as a DH. The June 1 date may be a touch optimistic; we'll know more once he heads out on his first rehab assignment.
Thu. May 17, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Bernadina is back in the lineup Thursday against right-hander James McDonald, Amanda Comak of the Washington Times reports.
Impact: Look for the pattern of Bernadina starting against righties and sitting against lefties to continue until Mike Morse returns from injury.
Thu. May 17, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Gonzalez (5-1) struck out 10 over seven innings Wednesday against Pittsburgh, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks.
Impact: One mistake to Josh Harrison turned a spectacular start into a merely excellent one, as Harrison's two-run jack accounted for the majority of the damage against Gio in this one. He's been everything you can ask for and more so far this year, and he's red-hot in the win column, coming away victorious in five of six starts.
Wed. May 16, 2012 | STATS
News: Wang says he's willing to pitch in relief - as unlikely as it seems the team would ask him to - when he joins the Washington Nationals after what should be one more start in the minors.
Impact: Wang missed the start of the season after hurting his left hamstring during a spring training appearance March 15. He was in Washington on Wednesday to throw a bullpen session in front of coaches but will return to Triple-A Syracuse.
Wed. May 16, 2012 | STATS
News: Strasburg suffered his first defeat Tuesday in a 6-1 loss to the Padres.
Impact: Strasburg lasted four innings and was charged with four runs and seven hits. Hedealt with various issues - a leadoff double that fell in with three defensive players nearby, starting San Diego's three-run first inning, the brief shower that interrupted that inning, a soggy ball and rosin bag, and a not-quite-clear matter involving what manager Davey Johnson said was some Hot Stuff penetrating ointment that accidentally ``got to the wrong place.''
Wed. May 16, 2012 | STATS
News: Desmond had two hits Tuesday in a 6-1 loss to the Padres.
Impact: Desmond is 10 for 25 over his last five games.
Wed. May 16, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Morse (back) made 60 throws on Wednesday, Amanda Comak of the Washington Times reports.
Impact: "I haven't been throwing, so it was kind of like a monkey riding a bike," Morse said. He reported feeling fine after the session, and it looks like his recovery is going well. He's currently eyeing a June 8 return to the Nationals.
Wed. May 16, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Ramos (knee) confirmed Wednesday that he is out for the season and hopes to have surgery within two-to-three weeks to fix his torn ACL, William Ladson of MLB.com reports.
Impact: While it was assumed, we now know definitively that Ramos is done for the year. Look for Jesus Flores to get most of the work behind the plate going forward.
Wed. May 16, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Ankiel is not in the lineup on Wednesday against Pittsburgh, the Nationals' Official Twitter reports.
Impact: With lefty Erik Bedard on the mound for the Pirates, Ankiel and Roger Bernadina are both out of the lineup.
Wed. May 16, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Bernadina is not in the lineup on Wednesday against Pittsburgh, the Nationals' Official Twitter reports.
Impact: Bernadina and Rick Ankiel are both getting the night off as the Nationals face lefty Erik Bedard. Bryce Harper, Xavier Nady, and Tyler Moore will start in the outfield.
Wed. May 16, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Harper will bat second and play center field against Pittsburgh on Wednesday, the Nationals' Official Twitter reports.
Impact: Harper has been batting fifth of late, but the change made sense since usual No. 2 hitter Roger Bernadina is not in the lineup. Harper will likely return to the fifth spot soon, although it would not be surprising if the Nationals move him around often.
Wed. May 16, 2012 | RotoWire
News: DeRosa (oblique) will start throwing off flat ground Wednesday, Bill Ladson of mlb.com reports.
Impact: He's hoping to start hitting again by the end of the week. "I'm starting to get to the point of being pain free. Now we just have to ramp it up and get a bat in my hand. I feel good," DeRosa said. There's still no timetable for his return, but he looks to be at least a week or two away from rejoining the Nats lineup.
Wed. May 16, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Morse (strained lat) took swings in a batting cage Tuesday without any issues, Bill Ladson of mlb.com reports.
Impact: He'll hit and throw every other day for now as he aims for a June 8 return to the lineup as the Nationals' DH during interleague play.
Tue. May 15, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Harper went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in Tuesday's loss to San Diego.
Impact: He went deep for the second straight day, depositing an Anthony Bass offering into the center field bleachers for his second MLB long ball. Harper appears to be locked in as the Nats' No. 5 hitter with Ryan Zimmerman and Adam LaRoche both healthy again.
Tue. May 15, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Strasburg gave up four runs on seven hits over four innings while striking out five and walking two in a loss to San Diego on Tuesday.
Impact: It was the first loss of the season for Strasburg, who was the victim of a misplayed ball in left-center field to begin the game on a play that could have been ruled an error. In any event, he threw 55 of his 81 pitches for strikes, and settled down a bit after a bumpy first inning that included a brief rain delay. Look for a rebound in his next start Sunday at home against the Orioles.
Tue. May 15, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Ramos (knee) was moved to the 60-day DL on Tuesday, the Nationals' official Twitter page reports.
Impact: The team brought up Carlos Maldonado to help now that Sandy Leon (ankle) is also on the DL. Ramos is likely out for the year after suffering a torn ACL on Saturday, so look for Jesus Flores to get most of the time behind the plate.
Tue. May 15, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Flores is in Tuesday's starting lineup, Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post reports.
Impact: Wilson Ramos' (knee) injury was followed a day later by Sandy Leon (ankle) landing on the 15-day DL. The Nats called up Carlos Maldonado to help out with catcher duties, but look for Flores to see most of the action going forward.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | STATS
News: Harper hit his first major league homer, a solo shot to straightaway center field for the Washington Nationals off San Diego Padres right-hander Tim Stauffer. The homer came in Harper's 15th game and 54th at-bat with the Nationals. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 amateur draft.
Impact: The 19-year-old Harper, the youngest player in the majors, drove a 2-1 pitch to the grass backdrop just to the left of the 402-foot marker with two outs in the third inning Monday night. Harper raced around the bases and straight to the dugout, where he exchanged high-fives with teammates. As the crowd cheered, Harper came to the top of the dugout steps for a curtain call, thrusting his index finger into the air.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Desmond was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI on Monday night.
Impact: Included in his offensive display was his eleventh double of the year, and he now has 14 RBI to go with a .271 batting average. Always a bit streaky, the Nationals could use a hot streak from him as they battle through their recent rash of significant injuries.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Burnett picked up his first 2012 save, inducing a double play ground ball with one out and the bases full as Washington held on to defeat San Diego 8-5 Monday night.
Impact: After Henry Rodriguez walked three while recording just one out in the ninth, Burnett was summoned to protect the lead, and he ended it with the a come backer to trigger a 1-2-3 double play. Burnett has been something of a forgotten man in the Nationals bullpen - this was just his third appearance in May - but while Rodriguez is still the favorite for saves, Monday's performance might get him a few more high leverage assignments.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Rodriguez retired just one batter while walking the bases full as he attempted to protect a three-run Washington lead on Monday night.
Impact: Rodriguez had a major meltdown Sunday, allowing a grand slam by Joey Votto, and had received a vote of confidence prior to Monday's game by Nats' manager Davey Johnson. He was noticeably distracted in this one, and couldn't find the strike zone, leading to his replacement by Sean Burnett who bailed him out with a double play to end the 8-5 win. There is a good chance he will still be the first choice in save situations, but he will need to get refocused in short order to keep the gig until Drew Storen returns.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Maldonado will be called up from Syracuse, Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post reports.
Impact: Sandy Leon suffered a high ankle sprain in his MLB debut, so the light-hitting Maldonado will temporarily serve as the backup to Jesus Flores in Washington.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Detwiler allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits, walking one and striking out three over five innings, and was left with a no-decision Monday night.
Impact: It was a lackluster performance at a time when a very strong outing would have been the ideal. Chien-Ming Wang has been pitching well in his rehab, and will be given consideration as a replacement for Detwiler in the rotation when he is ready to return in a couple of weeks. Detwiler has been very solid and still carries a 2.75 ERA for the season. However, his next start at home against Baltimore will likely be a critical outing in determining his future role.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Harper was 1-for-4 with a solo home run as the Nationals defeated the Padres 8-5 Monday night.
Impact: It was his first career home run, and likely the first of many for the 19-year-old. He's hitting just .232 on the season, but has seven extra-base hits (the home run and six doubles) in just 56 at bats at the major league level.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Wang (hamstring) will make one more Triple-A rehab appearance before being activated, Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports.
Impact: He tossed eight innings during an outing Monday, but the Nats are bringing him along slowly given the lack of a need for a starter in their rotation at the present time.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Nats manager Davey Johnson said that Rodriguez is still the team's closer, Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports.
Impact: He blew the save Sunday with a walk-off grand slam to Joey Votto, but Rodriguez remains the primary ninth-inning option for the Nats while Drew Storen and Brad Lidge still on the shelf.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Morse (lat) is now targeting June 8 against Boston for his return, Amanda Comak of The Washington Times reports.
Impact: He's scheduled for dry swings Tuesday, but Morse's June 8 timetable revolves around the idea that he'll likely be deployed as a DH during the series against the Red Sox.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Lidge (hernia) threw from flat ground Monday for the first time since surgery, Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post reports.
Impact: He's shooting for the second or third week in June as a return date. Lidge and closer Drew Storen are both expected to be back in the Washington bullpen around that time.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Flores is not in the starting lineup Monday, Amanda Comak of The Washington Times reports.
Impact: Sandy Leon is making his MLB debut Monday night, but Flores should be in line for the bulk of the playing time behind the plate while Wilson Ramos is sidelined by a torn ACL.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Espinosa went 2-for-4 Sunday with a two-run double in the Nats' loss to the Reds.
Impact: Espinosa had five RBI in the three-game series in Cincinnati after having just two the entire season before that.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Jackson was lifted after five innings Sunday having allowed three runs on five hits, including two homers by Joey Votto.
Impact: Jackson has had no-decisions in his last four starts and has just one win on the year, in part because he has thrown seven innings just twice this season. He was in line for the win still Sunday night before Joey Votto's heroics in the ninth inning.
Mon. May 14, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Rodriguez gave up a walk-off grand slam by Joey Votto on Sunday to blow the save against the Reds.
Impact: The key pitch might have been a two-strike pitch to Chris Heisey, which was ruled a checked swing. Rodriguez went on to lose Heisey on a walk to load the bases (he had two walks in the inning) and set the table for Votto.
Sun. May 13, 2012 | STATS
News: Ramos has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, the latest major setback for Washington.
Impact: One of Jordan Zimmermann's pitches deflected off his glove, and the catcher had his leg buckle when he planted to throw after getting the ball. He fell to his back, grabbed his knee and rolled over in pain, staying down for several minutes. An MRI confirmed that he tore the ligament. He's the 11th Nationals player to go on the disabled list this season.
May 13, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Nationals manager Davey Johnson re-iterated Saturday that the team had no plans to lift Strasburg's inning cap, the team's website reports.
Impact: Johnson also said the Nats have no plans to skip any starts for Strasburg to try and save him for a September stretch run. We'll have to see if that resolve sticks later in the summer if the club is in the thick of a playoff chase.
May 13, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Ramos' MRI revealed a torn ACL in his right knee, the Nationals' PR Twitter feed reports.
Impact: Ramos, who is headed to the DL, is presumably out for most, if not all, of the season, with Jesus Flores set to start at catcher for the Nats going forward, backed up by Sandy Leon.
May 13, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Flores is slated to serve as the Nationals' starting catcher with Wilson Ramos out indefinitely with a knee injury, the Washington Post reports.
Impact: Ramos is slated to undergo surgery, with Sandy Leon expected to be recalled as Flores' backup. Flores is just 7-for-35 with four RBI to date, but he's worth a look -- especially by those in NL-only leagues -- for those currently looking for some catching help.
May 13, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Ramos will need to undergo surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right knee, the Washington Post reports.
Impact: With Ramos out indefinitely, Jesus Flores will serve as the Nationals' starting catcher going forward, with Sandy Leon likely to be recalled to serve in a backup capacity.
Sat. May 12, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Rodriguez struck out the side in the ninth inning Saturday to record his eighth save of the season.
Impact: His first eight pitches in this one were strikes, and he only needed 10 pitches to record three strikeouts. He now has 21 Ks in 14.2 innings over his 16 appearances.
Sat. May 12, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Espinosa went 2-for-3 with a solo home run -- his second homer in as many days -- in the Nationals' win over the Reds on Saturday.
Impact: He also had a pair of steals in this one, both off reliever Aroldis Chapman. Espinosa could be nearing a turn-around, which he will need to stave off the likes of Steve Lombardozzi.
Sat. May 12, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Ramos left Saturday's game, and will undergo an MRI on his right knee, Amanda Comak of the Washington Times reports.
Impact: He turned on his knee in an awkward manner as he retrieved a passed ball, and he needed assistance coming off the field. Regardless of whether he needs a DL stint, this type of injury could force him to sit for a few days. Jesus Flores replaced him in the game, and he would likely be the Nats' primary option behind the plate.

News: Gonzalez is now 4-1 after he struck out a season-high nine batters Friday in a 7-3 win over the Reds.

News: Harper was in the Washington Nationals' lineup Saturday night, a day after he needed 10 stitches to close a wound above his left eye that was the result of an angry outburst. Harper slammed his bat against a wall in the dugout tunnel after making an out during a 7-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds. The barrel of the bat deflected off the wall and hit him above the eye, leaving a gash and a welt.
Impact: Harper said on Saturday that he didn't have a headache or any problem with his vision. There was still a welt covered by a bandage. The 19-year-old rookie didn't want to talk about the embarrassing moment, hoping to move on from it, and said he'll be more careful about venting frustrations.
Sat. May 12, 2012 | RotoWire
News: Gonzalez was not allowed to swing the bat during his at-bats Friday because of some soreness in his non-pitching hand, the Washington Times reports.
Impact: It does not sound like the injury will affect Gonzalez at the mound much, and he was still able to K nine in Friday's start against the Reds. The only effect it could have is manager Davey Johnson may be more apt to pull Gonzalez for a pinch batter in a run-hungry situation.

Impact: Werth's glove got caught underneath him and he bent his wrist backward trying to grab a sinking liner in right field in the sixth inning. He stayed on the ground briefly before throwing the ball back to the infield. He walked off holding his left wrist. Werth is hitting .276 with three homers and 12 RBIs in the second season of his $126 million contract.
