Charles Buckman, the chief mechanic for Mario Moraes' No. 19 car, was taken to the hospital with a concussion and cuts to his face and scalp.

"It's really, really unfortunate what happened today," Patrick said after the incident. "Thoughts and prayers are with him, with his family and hopefully he can get back on the track soon and be able to do what he loves."

Buckman was alert and awake as an ambulance took him to Methodist Hospital.

"I really don't remember how it happened," Buckman said. "All I remember is I was talking with someone on Marco Andretti's team, and then everything is blank from that point. I will be OK and hopefully back to work in a day or two."

The front of Patrick's No. 7 car hit Buckman, who appeared to then hit his head on the rear of the car before tumbling to the ground.

"You don't like to see that kind of thing, but, you know, it's not Danica's fault, it's not anybody's fault," Marco Andretti — Patrick's teammate — said, according to the Indianapolis Star.

In a separate incident, rookie English driver Alex Lloyd Lloyd complained of neck pain after hitting the wall hard in the first turn. The champion last season in the IRL's developmental Indy Lights Series had completed a lap at more than 223 mph when he lost control of his Dallara. He struck the outside wall with the rear of the car and continued into the second turn.

The 23-year-old was examined at the track's infield hospital then taken to Methodist Hospital for further tests.

The car was heavily damaged.

Earlier in the day, rookie Mario Dominguez of Mexico had a minor crash. He was not hurt when his car tapped the inside wall at slow speed in the warmup lane. He was examined at the track hospital and cleared to drive.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
