Seven times World Champion Michael Schumacher believed Lewis Hamilton would have been unable to recover if he had not won the World title this year.

At the end of the 2007 season Hamilton missed out on the World title in the final race of the season as Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen beat him to it.

This year's finish was even closer with Hamilton eventually beating Ferrari's Felipe Massa by just a single point after finishing fifth in the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Schumacher said: "Losing this year would have hurt him badly.

"One year it is an anecdote, but two in a row is something statistical.

"If he had lost his championship dream again, and again in the last race, it would be like he is condemned: eternally without the prize."

When asked about his own record breaking World titles, the former Ferrari man said the key was: "consistency and continuity."
