What's it look like when NASCAR driver Tony Stewart and F1 driver Lewis Hamilton switch seats?British driver Lewis Hamilton admitted Sunday night that he had already given up hope of winning the Formula 1 world championship with more than half the season remaining.
The McLaren driver suffered a crushing defeat in the European Grand Prix Sunday at the hands of Sebastian Vettel, the Red Bull driver who is the runaway championship leader.
The grand prix in Valencia was only the eighth of a 19-race season, but Vettel has already won six races and is 77 points ahead of Jenson Button and Mark Webber -- the equivalent of more than three race victories -- and 89 points ahead of Hamilton in fourth.
The disappointment of another race dominated by the German, who led comfortably from start to finish, was too much for Hamilton.
The Briton started the year as one of the title favorites but has had a series of clashes with officialdom and crashes with his rivals, and has had to field rumors that he is trying to leave the team who spotted him as a 13-year-old and launched him into Formula 1 to become a global sporting star.
Hamilton, the 2008 world champion, finished a distant fourth Sunday, more than 46 seconds behind Vettel, with Button, his McLaren teammate, even further back in sixth place.
"I am just being realistic," Hamilton said. "It is finished really, in the sense of the championship. It is almost over already. We cannot beat the Red Bull right now. We just can't. They would need to fall off the track for me to beat them. Sebastian is pretty much gone. He has pretty much won it.
"Unless Sebastian doesn't finish the next 10 races, which is very, very unlikely, then he is gone. I need four race wins just to catch up without him finishing any of those."
