The Fast Lane: Looking to rebound after Kansas

This weekend we're racing at one of my favorites — Chicago's Route 66 Raceway. I think for the sport to continue to grow, there are some key elements we need. The TV package is essential to this sport and its growth. The level of competition, which happens to be as good as it has ever been, needs to be at a high. The rivalries between the Pedregons, the Forces and the Capps all need to exist. All of these components need to be in place — and at the present time are in place. In addition, the venues we race at need to be inviting. Route 66 is just a very nice facility that makes it more exciting for the racer. At the same time it makes it so much more pleasant for our audience so that they can actually witness a NHRA drag race at a stadium that could probably support any kind of event.

On a personal note

My in-between time from our last race to this weekend's race was very limited. If I'm lucky, I travel home late Sunday. When I left. my nine-month-old son didn't have teeth and when I got back from Kansas City he sprouted two of them. My other son went from diapers to underwear. So is the life of a racer. It has its upsides as well as its downsides. One of the downsides is you are away from your family and it has a tendency to tug on you a little bit when you come home. The kids are always excited to see you, and they stay up late because they know you are going to come home. It's the best feeling. But at the same time, it makes you wonder. I miss so much while I'm away, but it all balances itself out because I am able to bring them to an occasional event like Chicago, which is only three hours away.

Rewind and review

I can recap last weekend at Topeka quickly: We qualified well at No. 3 but going out in the second round was not what we were after. I'm thinking Chicago will be better. I've won at Joliet's Route 66 Raceway a few times, and hope to repeat.

It's showtime ...

It's that time of year for the Walmart shareholders meeting in Fayetteville, Ark. Our Quaker State show car will be one of the attractions. We worked until late Monday night incorporating a smoke machine as a special effect having smoke pour out of the headers. It has a great presence as it is — a low-slung Chevy Impala decked out in Quaker State green with 18 inch Goodyear slick tires in the back with a supercharger sticking out of the hood. However, we have been trying to figure out how to bring the show car to life. I'm excited to fly out and see it on display. My next goal with the show car will be for MTX Audio to install sound effects. Times Square coming up after the Chicago race. That should be good.
