Lap 494: Here he comes: Jeff Gordon is on the bumper of Jimmie Johnson, trailing by just .283 of a second now.
Lap 492: Jeff Gordon continues to stalk Jimmie Johnson, but has yet to close the gap further.
Lap 489: Jeff Gordon is closing the gap. He trails Jimmie Johnson by a mere .344 of a second with just over 10 laps remaining.

Lap 481: Jimmie Johnson has endured a rather eventful start to the season, from a 42nd-place finish after crashing in the season-opening Daytona 500, to a NASCAR penalty for infractions there - a penalty which subsequently was mostly rescinded on final appeal, giving Johnson's team back the points taken and also rescinding the suspension of crew chief Chad Knaus and car chief Ron Malec - and now he's leading at Martinsville.

Lap 461: Can Jeff Gordon catch his teammate? Gordon trails Jimmie Johnson by .484 second. The two have combined to lead 397 laps today.
Lap 458: Make that a 1-2-3 Hendrick Motorsports run at this point. Team owner Rick Hendrick is attempting to snare his 200th career NASCAR Cup win today.
Lap 455: Jimmie Johnson's lead over Jeff Gordon has been cut to .736 a second.
Lap 450: With 50 laps to go, 15 cars remain on the lead lap.
Lap 449: Dale Earnhardt Jr. has moved to fourth, completing the pass of Brad Keselowski.
Lap 436: NASCAR on FOX's Larry McReynolds points out that three drivers in the top six (Johnson, Keselowski, Newman) suffered pit road speeding penalties at some point today.
Lap 435: Matt Kenseth gets past Martin Truex Jr. to jump up to eighth place.
Lap 431: Denny Hamlin has been passed by both Brad Keselowski and Dale Earnhardt Jr., falling to sixth overall.
Lap 426: Matt Kenseth, in ninth, is now the only Ford in the top 10. Teammate Greg Biffle has dropped to 11th.
Lap 423: Brad Keselowski, another one recovering from a penalty on pit road, is riding the bumper of Denny Hamlin in a battle for fourth.
Lap 414: Jeff Gordon is cutting into Jimmie Johnson's lead. Johnson holds a .817-second edge over Gordon. They are followed by Clint Bowyer, Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski. Dale Earnhardt Jr., in seventh, just turned the fastest lap on the track.
Lap 408: Points leader Greg Biffle is starting to make back up lost ground. Biffle has slowly worked his way up to 10th in the field.
Lap 402: Jimmie Johnson continues to pace the field, holding a .780-second edge over teammate Jeff Gordon. Clint Bowyer, Denny Hamlin and Ryan Newman - who has recovered from an earlier penalty - round out the top five.
Lap 395: New leader: Jimmie Johnson finally completes the pass of Denny Hamlin. Jeff Gordon also completes the pass, to sit second behind his Hendrick Motorsports' teammate.
Lap 393: Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin continue to race side by side, with Jeff Gordon right on Johnson's bumper. The trio is coming up on traffic on the track.
Lap 391: Jimmie Johnson is inside Denny Hamlin's car. Jeff Gordon is going to try to follow him through, but Johnson can't quite complete the pass.
Lap 389: Jimmie Johnson continues to put the pressure on leader Denny Hamlin. The pair, followed closely by Jeff Gordon, are in a tight battle for the top spot.
RESTART - Lap 368: Denny Hamlin, who won the race off pit road, leads Jeff Gordon to the flag.
Lap 365: Denny Hamlin takes the lead on pit road, edging past the Hendrick duo of Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon.
Lap 364: Leaders pit. Jimmie Johnson has an issue as he starts to pull out of his pits, then stops as it appears he might have a problem from the start, then is cleared to pull out again. That costs him a couple of spots.
CAUTION 5 - Lap 361 - Travis Kvapil spins while running 26th.
Lap 357: New leader: Jimmie Johnson ends Jeff Gordon's dominant 322-lap run at the front. Johnson moves inside Gordon's car and takes the top spot.
Lap 356: Here comes Jimmie Johnson. This lap, he's down by just .03 of a second.
Lap 351: Watch out, it's getting tight at the front. Jeff Gordon's lead has been trimmed to .388-second by Jimmie Johnson.
Lap 346: Dale Earnhardt Jr. has slipped back as his teammates post an increasingly heated battle for the lead. Jeff Gordon's edge over Jimmie Johnson has been cut to .835-second, while Denny Hamlin has moved to third and Clint Bowyer to fourth, dropping Dale Earnhardt Jr. to fifth.

Lap 312: Jimmie Johnson is closing in on Clint Bowyer in second.
Lap 306: Jeff Gordon is still pacing the field, as Clint Bowyer holds onto second. Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart, AJ Allmendinger and Aric Almirola round out the top 10.
Lap 300: Jeff Gordon has led 267 laps today. Meanwhile, his teammate Jimmie Johnson has slipped past Dale Earnhardt Jr. to take third.
Lap 296: Jeff Gordon, who has a 1.846-second lead over Clint Bowyer, and fourth-running Jimmie Johnson continue to take turns posting the fastest lap on the track.
Lap 291: Jimmie Johnson, a six-time Martinsville winner, is back in the top five. He's running fourth to put three Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolets in the top four.
Lap 289: Jeff Gordon is now turning in the top speeds on the track, and turning the smooth laps needed to maintain the top spot.
Lap 285: Jeff Gordon continues to hold a 1.49-second lead over Clint Bowyer - but it's his teammate Jimmie Johnson who just turned in the fastest lap on the track.
Lap 280: Jeff Gordon once more takes control from the restart. Clint Bowyer, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth, Martin Truex Jr., Tony Stewart and AJ Allmendinger round out the top 10.

CAUTION 3 - Lap 264 - Juan Pablo Montoya and Ken Schrader make contact, sending Montoya spinning across the track.

Lap 255: Drivers are really battling for position on this restart, as the race has just passed the halfway point.
RESTART - Lap 255 - Jeff Gordon leads the field back to the green, with Dale Earnhardt Jr., Clint Bowyer, Matt Kenseth, Brad Keselowski rounding out the top five.
Lap 248: Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart are among those pitting during the caution period.
Lap 245: Kasey Kahne to the garage. Kahne and his Hendrick Motorsports team have endured setbacks in almost every race this season.
CAUTION 2 - Lap 244 - Dave Blaney spins.
Lap 242: After the sequence of pit stops, Jeff Gordon is back in the lead. He has a .234-second edge over Dale Earnhardt Jr. They are followed by Denny Hamlin and Clint Bowyer.
Lap 240: Kasey Kahne appears to have a problem developing with his car.

Lap 239: Aric Almirola, who has yet to pit, leads the field at this point.
Lap 237: Clint Bowyer pits from the lead. Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth among those also pitting.
Lap 235: Denny Hamlin pits from the lead, as do Marcos Ambrose, Jimmie Johnson and others. Clint Bowyer is the leader.
Lap 233: Leader Dale Earnhardt Jr. and second-running Jeff Gordon are among those pitting.
Lap 231: Kasey Kahne on pit road.
Lap 230: Dale Earnhardt Jr. takes the lead from Jeff Gordon for his first lead of the day - and immediately begins to pull away from the driver.

Lap 226: Jeff Gordon completes the pass to lap Greg Biffle as Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton, Brian Vickers and Paul Menard are among those pitting.

Lap 221: Only 15 cars remain on the lead lap as Jeff Gordon continues to set a hot pace. Bobby Labonte pits, starting the green-flag sequence.

Lap 207: Kurt Busch is in trouble again. He has another right front tire problem and is heading to the pits once more.
Lap 203: David Reutimann, who has already spent laps in the garage, heads back to the pits. Reutimann is sharing his Tommy Baldwin Racing entry with Danica Patrick - and the team needs a good finish to stay in the top 35 in owners points.
Lap 199: Some of the top title contenders are struggling at Martinsville today. Points leader Greg Biffle is 15th. Carl Edwards is 19th. And, after leading early in the race, Kevin Harvick is 20th.
Lap 193: Jeff Gordon continues to pace the field, leading Denny Hamlin by 2.332 seconds. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kasey Kahne and Clint Bowyer round out the top five.
Lap 187: It's looking like a Hendrick Motorsports kind of day, with Jeff Gordon maintaining the lead and Kasey Kahne and Dale Earnhardt Jr. also in the top five.
Lap 179: Kyle Busch returns to the track after 79 laps in the garage. He's just trying to pick up as many points as possible now.
Lap 175: Kevin Harvick, who led early in the race, is mired in 13th now.
Lap 175: Jimmie Johnson is picking back up lost ground. He's back up to 14th in the field now.
Lap 173: Dale Earnhardt Jr. is picking up the pace, moving past Clint Bowyer and into third.
Lap 171: Jeff Gordon continues to pace the field, holding a 2.438-second lead. He is followed by Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer, Dale Eanhardt Jr. and Kasey Kahne.
Lap 169: Clint Bowyer is banging on second-running Denny Hamlin a little in an effort to slip past him. Hamlin, though, is holding strong in second.
Lap 160: Jeff Gordon continues to set the pace and is comfortably in front of the field.
Lap 145: Pay attention, Junior Nation: Dale Earnhardt Jr. has broken into the top five and is running fourth in the race. Jeff Gordon continues to lead, followed by Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer, Earnhardt Jr. and Kasey Kahne. That makes three Hendrick Motorsports' drivers in the top five.
Lap 140: How tough are pit-road penalties at this short track? Jimmie Johnson has moved back to 17th after his, while Ryan Newman is 21st after also being assessed a speeding penalty during the initial pit stops.
Lap 138: Rough day for the Busch brothers at Martinsville Speedway. Kyle Busch is still in the garage undergoing repairs on his wrecked car - the lone crash of the day to this point - while Kurt Busch is five laps down in 36th after having a tire go flat.
Lap 131: Dale Earnhardt Jr. moves to sixth. Jeff Gordon continues to set the pace, leading Denny Hamlin by 2.356 seconds. Hamlin is a four-time winner at the track. Kasey Kahne, Clint Bowyer and Jeff Burton round out the top five.
Lap 117: Matt Kenseth is on the move, breaking into the top 10. The leaders now are: Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kahne, Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer, Martin Truex Jr., Jeff Burton, Brad Keselowski, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Matt Kenseth and Tony Stewart.
Lap 109: Greg Biffle's lead in the points standings is in danger today as he is mired deep in the field, in 18th.
Lap 108: Dale Earnhardt Jr. bumps his way back past Aric Almirola after the two previously bumped on the track. The Roush Fenway Fords are: Matt Kenseth (12th), Greg Biffle (18th) and Carl Edwards (19th).
Lap 107: Aric Almirola is leading the Ford contingent, in the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports entry. Almirola is currently seventh, while the Roush Fenway Racing Fords are struggling a bit today.
RESTART - Lap 105: Jeff Gordon maintains the lead through the stops, and will restart beside Denny Hamlin. They are followed by Brad Keselowski and Kasey Kahne.
Lap 103: Jimmie Johnson, who had raced his way into the top 10, is assessed a pit-road speeding penalty for being too fast exiting after his stop. Ryan Newman is also assessed a pit-road penalty for being too fast entering.
Lap 102: Leaders hit the tight pit road at Martinsville.
CAUTION 1 - Lap 101 - Kyle Busch crash.
Lap 100: Brian Vickers has returned to the Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota he shares with Mark Martin. After a stellar run at Bristol, he is 19th in this race.
Lap 100: Clearing traffic again, Jeff Gordon once more begins to build on his lead. He has a 1.796-second edge over Brad Keselowski.
Lap 93: Brad Keselowski has once more cut Jeff Gordon's lead to less than a second.
Lap 89: Jeff Gordon has led 67 laps. He is followed by Brad Keselowski, Kasey Kahne, Clint Bowyer, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Newman, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton.
Lap 86: There are 25 cars remaining on the lead lap as the green-flag run continues at the track.
Lap 82: Only two of the drivers in the top five are past winners at Martinsville - leader Jeff Gordon and Denny Hamlin.
Lap 79: Jeff Gordon has a 0.416-second lead over Brad Keselowski. Clint Bowyer, Kasey Kahne and Denny Hamlin round out the top five.
Lap 78: Brad Keselowski is putting the pressure on Jeff Gordon now. Gordon's lead has been cut to less than a second.
Lap 66: Jeff Gordon currently has the field well in hand. Gordon carries a 3.385-second lead over second-running Brad Keselowski. Gordon has more Martinsville wins than any driver in the field today, with seven.
Lap 61: Kasey Kahne, who started from the pole position, moves back to third.
Lap 60: Kevin Harvick continues to be under fire. Passed by Brad Keselowski for second, he is facing a challenge for third from Kasey Kahne.
Lap 60: Kurt Busch has a right front tire going down and is limping to pit road. No caution as he drive erratically trying to maintain control heading to pit road.
Lap 48: The top 10 in the running order are spreading out a bit, with Jeff Gordon holding a 2.656-second lead over Kevin Harvick. They are followed by Brad Keselowski, Clint Bowyer, Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr.

Lap 45: The field continues to stretch out around the half-mile oval. Jeff Gordon now leads by more than two seconds.
Lap 36: The field is starting to spread out on the tough track. Jeff Gordon now has a 1.651-second edge over Kevin Harvick.
Lap 34: Jeff Gordon continues to set the pace. He's part of the Hendrick arsenal attempting to give team owner Rick Hendrick his 200th career NASCAR Cup win today.
Lap 31: Scott Riggs is in the garage.
Lap 26: Reed Sorenson is in the garage.
Lap 23: Jeff Gordon moves into the lead.
Lap 20: Jeff Gordon moves into second, ahead of Hendrick Motorsports' teammate Kasey Kahne.
Lap 17: Kevin Harvick is trying to make it two wins in two days at Martinsville Speedway. He dominated the Camping World Truck Series race at the track on Saturday.
Lap 14: Kevin Harvick has settled in as the leader, with the field still tight at the front.
Lap 9: As expected, shuffling among the leaders is rapid in the opening laps on the short track, but Kevin Harvick is setting the pace.
