Parsons began his racing career in 1963 at Mt. Clemens Speedway. He went on to win a pair of ARCA championships before joining NASCAR in 1970. He won his first race the following season, and went on to win the 1973 NASCAR Cup championship.

Parsons (seen in later times with Ryan Newman) also was invited to compete in the International Race of Champions series in the late 1970s and early '80s. He won a race against the best in motorsports in that realm, as well.

Parsons continued to gain accolades after his racing career. He joined ESPN as an analyst in 1989 and received a series of awards, including an Emmy, and continued his career on Performance Racing Network.
