As an owner, Owens reached the pinnacle of racing when he earned the 1966 NASCAR Cup title with David Pearson behind the wheel. The pair were on a tear that season. In 44 starts, they won 15 races with 33 top-10 finishes, 26 of them top fives.

His 32 wins included victories by Junior Johnson, Buddy Baker, Glenn “Fireball” Roberts, Mario Andretti, Al Unser, Ralph Earnhardt and David Pearson.
