Turner was potent in NASCAR’s Convertible Series. He won a total of 38 races in the division, including winning 22 wins in 42 starts in 1956. Amazingly, he still finished runner-up in the series that season.

Turner was the first NASCAR driver to be featured on the cover of a national magazine when he was on Sports Illustrated, which dubbed him the “Babe Ruth of Stock Car Racing.” He went on to earn a unique series of firsts, including being the first two win two consecutive Grand National races from the pole by leading every lap and earning the only win in a Nash in NASCAR.
