Joe Weatherly was a lively, personable racer who liked to have fun while being competitive. He is known for both his personality and his pair of titles in what became the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Here are five reasons he could be a Hall of Famer.

Weatherly was a standout in the modified division, as well. During the 1952 and ’53 seasons, he won 101 modified races and the 1953 title.

Weatherly earned 25 Cup wins, 24th all time, and 18 poles during his career.

Weatherly was a versatile racer. Not only did he find success in a variety of vehicles — and among a diverse group of team owners — but he also found it on a diverse set of tracks. He won races at short tracks, superspeedways and speedways during his career — and of course, on the dirt tracks that highlighted the schedule during his era.

Not limited to any one series, Weatherly joined a host of drivers from his era that also competed in NASCAR’s Convertible Series. He found success there as well, earning 12 victories and finishing in the top seven in each of his four seasons in which he raced in the series.

Weatherly is one of NASCAR’s 13 multiple-time champions. He won the titles in 1962, when he earned nine wins and 45 top 10s in 53 races driving for Hall of Famer Bud Moore, and again in 1963 when he earned three wins and 35 top-10 finishes — driving for nine different teams.
