Raymond Parks was known in stock-car racing circles even before NASCAR existed. He enthusiastically embraced racing and all that it could create in a career that might have appeared brief in terms of team ownership but paved the way for many who would follow in his footsteps. Parks' contributions to NASCAR helped craft the sport as it is known today. His contributions to the sport are numerous, but here’s a look at five that could make him a Hall of Famer.

Parks (pictured with NASCAR president Mike Helton) might not be as well known as some, but he was one of the original members who met in the Streamline Hotel in Daytona Beach, Fla., to talk about creating the new stock-car racing series. He supported Bill France Sr. in his ideas and innovations, helping lay the foundation for the sport fans know today.

Parks was involved in stock-car racing long before the concept of NASCAR ever came up. When the sport did begin, Parks was ready. He paired with fellow Atlanta native and mechanic Red Vogt to dominate stock-car contests in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

It’s somehow appropriate for Parks, a man who knew stock-car racing well and was interested in the formation of the National Stock Car Racing Association, to be successful once it was started. And he was — from the very start. Parks put World War II veteran Red Byron in his car for that first NASCAR season — and they found success. Parks not only won the first race, but he went on to win the first series title in 1949 in a Parks-owned car.

Parks might not have been one of the longest-running team owners in the sport’s history, but he certainly made his mark. His team competed in only four seasons — 1949, 1950, 1954 and 1955 — but he landed some of the top talent of the day and sparked careers that would carry his legacy beyond his ownership days. He won two races, two pole positions and earned 12 top-10 finishes (11 of them top fives) in 18 series races. His cars were driven in 1949 by men like Red Byron, Bob Flock and Roy Hall. In 1954, Fonty Flock drove a Parks car, and in 1955, Curtis Turner took a turn.

Even though he retired from racing in the mid-1950s, Parks has helped preserve some of NASCAR’s earliest history. His presence is seen throughout the new Hall of Fame and, in March 2009, he announced that he was donating his historic trophies to the Hall, helping a new generation of NASCAR fans see just how far the sport has come from its roots.
